  1. Don't worry about it. It's normal. When you full length size the next time it will fix it. Throw out ones that are missing chunks of brass from the top of the neck however. (Always examine your cases after sizing, and after trimming and priming.) Jeff
  2. Well that was a question worth asking early on! Since I didn't rely on hearing the hits in my first go at steel I'll just carry on with what I'm doing and not worry about it. No use establishing a bad habit. Thanks everyone for the advice.
  3. I shot my first Tuesday night steel last night. I had fun and did well accuracy wise but had a hard time telling if I hit or missed some targets. I didn't want to assume I'd missed just because I didn't hear the hit and I was correct in doing so as most of them were hits. The question is what can I do to enhance hearing the hits before I move on? I was using regular ear muffs. Should I try something like Dillon electronic muffs? Are they fast enough/accurate enough to muffle the report from the shot but let me clearly hear the hit on the steel? TIA, Jeff
  4. IMO: Size, trim, and load. You're not shooting 1000 yds with 90grn bullets. Practice is worth way more than trying to load perfect ammo. Jeff
  5. NJL, No I have a handle for it and twist it by hand. I can do about 12 cases per min. Jeff
  6. 91 and 75 are other strengths that rubbing alcohol comes in. You want 99%. It's a bit harder to find. The link I posted for the tool is correct for the tool that I use. It removes the crimp to the minimum necessasary to get the primer seated at the same time cleaning and squaring the primer pocket. Jeff
  7. I don't use my super swage as the primer pockets seem to get loose after three or four firings. Plus the tool I use is much faster IMO: http://www.cabelas.com/p-0002928210622a.shtml Too many steps per case using the Dillon. One or two twists and this tool cuts out the crimp nicely. One other trick I've learned from years of reloading is instead of buying lube order one 4oz bottle of 100% lanolin on ebay. Go to CVS and buy one 16oz bottle of 99% rubbing alcohol. Do not get 91% or 75% rubbing alcohol as the lanolin seperates. 99% is there I think CVS and Safeway have it. Mix the two together in a spray bottle and you have geat case lube for about 10,000 cases. Total cost is around $5. Jeff edited for clarity
  8. Rio is $85 per year single or $95 per year family. The best value for anything anywhere IMO .............. Jeff
  9. Thanks everyone for the advice/suggestions and the welcomes. I'm going to my club's 'Tuesday Night Steel' tonight to do a little recon. Both my daughter and I have been hi-power shooters there for many years. She has branched off to shooting sporting clays since she works weekends there (she can shoot it anytime) and I am giving three gun and maybe the pistol matches a try. Jeff
  10. Irons or optics? In my experience shooting irons the sight radius is the factor more than barrel length............... I can shoot my 16" with rifle gas (1:8 twist) and a 20" sight radius at hi-power matches and can get pretty much the same scores at 500yds as I do with my 20" otherwise identical NM rifle. Jeff
  11. If I went for 9mm what would you suggest? P226, CZ75 or ? Jeff
  12. Mine are actually 7s. If I order 10s will that change effect what division I can shoot? Jeff
  13. Thanks all. 4 mags would only give me 24 rounds. I'll see if I can scare up a few more. Anyone have holster recommendations? All I have now is an OWB holster for CCW. Jeff
  14. I'm new to 3 gun, I've fired one rifle stage at my club's match last month and had a lot of fun. I plan to use what I have as much as possible at least for the first few matches. Rifle: RRA 18" with a 20" site radius 1:8 iron sights. Shotgun: Mossberg 935spx 7+1 rifle sights. Pistol: Sig P220 4 mags (could use a holster recommendation). TIA, Jeff
  15. What are you using to help you decide where to adjust your sizing die? When I've seen this happen on .223 it's usually not adjusting the sizing die to the correct chamber dimensions. I use a sizing die for my chambe and never have a probem. I've seen other that use the wrong sizing die for thier chamber and have your exact problem. Jeff
  16. I am just starting out in 3-gun, rifle only so far, and am shopping around for a shotgun. I've found a beretta a303 semi auto 12 gauge. Does anyone have any opinions on this gun? I'd like to know if a mag extension is possible. TIA, Jeff
  17. +1 on what BPlatt says. I have a 16" cut down from a 20". 1:7.7 twist, rifle gas, full length hand guards, 20" sight radius. It operates on any ammo so far from commercial PMC to my handloads (LC, Rem 7 1/2s, 24.5 varget, 77grn hpbt). Yes the gas port is enlarged I think to .100. It runs very smooth, not anywhere near as sharp a recoil as a carbine 16". With the Miceluck (spelled wrong I'm sure) compensator it is really nice to shoot. Jeff
  18. I'm setting up a carbine for 3 gun. I plan to use a millet or nikon 1-4x. Since I am building it now I have the choice of a pic front gas block or a post. I'm wondering how useful a BUIS would be even if the rear was flip up since won't the scope be in the way anyway? TIA, Jeff
  19. I am building a new carbine length rife and would like to be able to use it to try 3-gun. I have the opportunity now to go 16" or 18". I'd like to go 16" but want to make sure. I am using a 1:7.7 twist stainless and planning to shoot 77grn HPBT at around 2,800 FPS (24.5 grns Varget). I was told at a 3-gun match today that there are power requirements for sanctioned matches and that a 16" may not get the velocity that I need. Considering that I'm using 77grn bullets with 24.5grns of Varget my gut feeling is I will be OK. I saw a lot of guys today shooting factory loads out of 16" 1:9s. TIA, Jeff
