  1. Example of this as a tactic:

While shooting over a barrel, with more shots left than ammo in the magazine, I dropped the non-empty magazine without putting it in retention and reloaded a fresh magazine quicker than if I had done a regular retention. At that point the magazine was laying on top of the barrel.

I then engaged the remaining targets from behind the barrel and, as I started to run towards the next position, I grabbed the dropped magazine from the top of the barrel with my support hand. By the time I was in concealment behind the last barrier, the magazine was in my pocket, my support hand wrapped around my strong hand, ready to shoot.

I took advantage of the fact that the magazine would land on the barrel to save time, since it would hit the ground and that it would be at hip level.

No, there is no gaming in IDPA.

This should have earned you a PE since you performed a "speed reload" and did not stow the magazine before the next round was fired.

Agree. At best it was a RWR where the first shot after the reload was fired prior to stowing the mag. Some might even argue the shooter left cover BEFORE the reload was complete and deserved another PE or even it was an intentional action to circumvent the rules and would warrent an FTDR.

  2. Lots of apples and oranges getting mixed here but to the OP question, as mentioned else where if you don't retreive it before you leave the postion or fire the last shot you get a PE.

IMHO, stopping to retreive a mag and keep from getting a PE will cost you more thim than just sucking up the PE and moving on more oftern that not.

  3. IMHO (and I'm sure others will disagree) you may want both. If you only need to load 2 shells, with the load 2 methd you have to dismount the gun, flip it, load, remount, reacquire the tgt. It can be faster over all to do a weak hand reload with 2 shells keeping the gun mounted. If you need to load 4 or 6 or 8 the load 2 or load 4 method will be faster.

Also, think of all the time you've seen someone mis and needing to make up ONE shot. Plan on how you can do that quickly as well.

I have both the Carbon Arms 8 shell caddy for load 4 reloding when I need to load a lot and plain 6 shell caddies when I just need to grab a few. I plan to upgrade to 4x4 caddies soon.

It's harder to learn and takes more to practice but having the right techniqe to use at the right time will be faster.

    YMMV.

  4. We've used version 1.1.2. for our April match. It worked quite well. Everyone that did scoring adapted to the user interface easyly and we had not major issues.

The only thing I'd ask for at this time is in the score report, it would be nice if we had a total column for Penelities and Points next to the score total.

Overall, v.1.1.2 is a welcome update, THANKS! :-)

  5. Rob,

How is that lifter for weak hand loading? I cut my loading port about that far and I have a huge gap between the shell and the lifter, and I was curious if the c-rums would bring the lifter far enough forward to make it worthwhile or am I going to need to get it extended even more.

    Looks good by the way

    Here's what I did:

Weak hand loading is smooth as silk. I'd get that lifter welded up by C-Rums P.D.Q. They also extend it so there is little chance catching your thumb.

  6. Question still stands: has anyone actually used 1.1.2 yet to score a decent-sized (5-6 stages, 40+ competitors) match?

I'll let you know how Sat's 6 stage, ~20 shooter (2 squads) IDPA match goes. I don't exect any issues as I've done a small test match and all was well.

  7. I just saw that on Facebook and was wondering if this was an April Fools joke or not?

    http://www.shootingw...om/story/284042

Since the Colorado law instigates a 15-round limit on magazines, and that most non-extended magazines are at 15 rounds and below (for 9mm), I was wondering it this was a joke or not, due to the date.

    Can someone confirm this?

    Thanks in advance!

FYI, many full size and popular handguns like M&P's and XD's have standard mag capacities of 17 to 19 rounds. That is more than 15.

As I understood the issue and reasoning (and I could be very wrong) there was concern about legal definitions of "transfer" in the new law and normal conduct of the match could / would require or facilitate shooters to viloate the law.

  8. practiscore has a program.

This. It operates on mobile devices only but versions for iOS and Android both support IDPA scoring. We use it on networked Google Tablets to score in real time. Results are avaiable momemts after the last shot fired. Registration is pretty easy to handle once you have run a few matches and have built up your shooter database.

If you are looking for something on a PC that you input data into as a batch there a number of spreadsheets avaiable - they are not hard to develop.

There is also IDPA support in SSI's shootnscoreit. It also works well but it requires each shooter to have a free account on the SSI web page and to preregister for a match. Not a good thing for club matches IMHO.

  9. Rob the problem with most mid size or larger tablets is the battery life. The NST's can run for a couple of days for a big match if need be on one charge, I am talking 10 - 12 hours a day of continuous use. I have not seen any of the bigger tablets go even one 12 hour day without needing a charge.

    Brian

True, the cheapest ones don't have much battery life. Battery life was a issue when I went for the Google Nexus 7's. It'll go 10-12 hrs, much more if you keep WiFi off till you needed it and turn the screen off for long idel times. If you have a multi day match and can't charge over night they are not the solution.

  10. euxx,

I just wanted to say thanks again for getting the IDPA function out for use on the Android platform. I just set up our next match (6 April) and it was very, very easy. Having all the Divisions and Classifications set up as part of the default helped speed the set up alot. I've also setup and scored a small dummy match (two stages, one shooter) just to see how it looked. Very nice. The results output is exactly what our local shooters have been looking for and the scoreing screen layout is a lot better than how I was able to configure a Time Plus match for IDPA.

I'll also put a plug for using a full on tablets (we have two Goggle Nexus 7 tablets) and they are FAST and bright. I've used Nooks at another match and they have some good points, the screeen is very readable, but also a number of issues. A full on tablet is so much nicer to use. I know higher end tables are much more expensive than a Nook but mid range tablets are not much more expensive but just seem to work so much better. I get the cost factor but really if you use them a lot and like me are responsable for keeping them up they make life so much nicer.

  11. Every time I set up an 18 rnd stage

Not very often, unless you get a diabolical stage designer that gives you 12 18rnd stages for a match (like at EFGA thank you KO! :)). You'll want that extra reload on your belt incase you do a couple extra shots. Always good for a malfunction, of course. Or if the stage description requires it.

    That would be me.

At our local matches 50% or more of our stages will be 18 rnds - most of those with movers activated by steel. I also create many opprotunites for Tac loads to be advantagious (if you don't mess them up  ). Show up at one of our matches with only 1 on the belt, you're not going to be happy.

If you're dropping mags you need to check you gear.

  12. Saw it this morning. :-) Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've done a very small sample test match (2 stages, 1 shooter) but so far I really like what I see. The results report is perfect, IMHO.

It did seem the "foreign" catagory box came up pre checked as if it were the default but can't say for sure if that is going to be a pattern or just a local database issue.

  13. Ok I know that its a little expensive for the Pal Filler and some people out there said ... why not spend the extra money and go with the dillon RF100,

NOW correct me if I'm wrong, with the Dillon you need to buy two machines one for large primes and one for small primers so $628.00..(if I'm wrong tell me what it will cost to have large and small primers on the RF100)

the pal filler is made from machined aluminum solid will last for years with a

base that does large and small primers..

The RF100 for large or small is $314 or so. There is a conversion kit for about $90-$100 so the total to load small and large on the RF100 is ~$400 +/-.

I had been waiting for the Vibra Prime so I could get one and I like the features as described and that's what I wanted. But they sold out so quick and with another 10-12 week wait I said screw it and just orderd a Palfiller. Sure its 3x+ over the cost of the Vibra Prime w/ shipping but its 1/2 the cost of the RF100 if you want to load small and large primers (which I do). I'd have rather spent the $60 or so on the Vibra Prime it was hard enough waitig the first time.

  14. I'm confused. You seem to be debating the merits between shooting in ESP vs SSP yet your question is which counts more, winning your Division or winning High Overall (which is not really and IDPA award). If you are high score overall it means you have also won your Divison as well as betten every other shooter in every other Division. To you question; no, high score overall is more significant than just a single Division win.

  15. Is there a general rule for breaking clay targets? ive been running matches under the "you must clear the target stand" rule but I was wondering what the actual rules are so i can use them instead

I run the club match davehorn referred to on the first page of this thread. We run an outlaw 3-gun match with divisions and scoring (time plus) generally based on USPSA rules. We are not a USPSA club but many of our shooters shoot USPSA and IDPA in the area. The COF's are safe e.g., follow min distance for steel rules but generally we don't worry about details of the USPSA COF rules - we just want to have fun.

In short, a static clay must show damage due to gun fire. If the shooter can't see damage while shooting it's on them to reengage or risk getting scored a miss. Because of this rule we do not put up anything but pristine clays - its easy to tell if there is damage. From time to time a go fast guy "counts" on a single pellet hit and get's it wrong. No different from calling a shot on cardboard. If you as a shooter are willing to risk a miss to go faster that is your choice.

As to the "only one pellet hit is a miss" line of thought, that's only true if you define it that way. However, you then you need a definition of hit that is not subjective. Any damage due to gun fire is not subjective, or it's the least subjective way I can think of to define a hit on a clay. If you have a better idea I'm listening. No matter how you define it, at some point someone is going to end up pushing the definition. In your example of "clear the target stand" how do you score a hit that breaks the clay but a chunk >50% of the clay still on the stand but clearly 1/3 is gone? If you call that part left as debris and its a hit, how is that different than the 99% left on the stand and the 1% missing due to a one pellet hit? Is the rule <50% on the stand a hit and >50% a miss? Why not 33% or 66% or 75%? is it % of surface 2D projected surface area or mass?

Any damage sounds like a pretty clear easy to apply standard to me.

As to the clay falling due to hit on another clay Dave mentioned. That was an artifact of the way the stands and holders were set up and was not intentional. Yes we scored the fallen clay as a hit as it was no different than shooting between two clays to try and get a "2-fer". In this case you had to hit the holder hard enough to wiggle the stand to knock the clay off. If you didn't you had to shoot it off.
