  1. The 120pf thing is more of a guideline than a rule, they don't check. We had a couple guys on our squad, who shall remain nameless, shooting revolvers and you could actually see the bullets going downrange. Well under 120pf but they did stop the clock and stopping the clock is really all that matters.

The 120pf is, as you say, a guideline - it is what the stop plates are tested to respond to.

I think there used to be - maybe still is - a rule, though, that says centerfire ammo has to be going at least 750fps.

    (ObNote, that's a PF of about 72 with a 92-grain bullet :roflol: )

Yes, that is still in the draft rules. When I talked to the office last time, they are still waiting to get everyone together to decide on the final rule book and no date was projected. In the meantime, the 750 fps is a very sound safety rule due to fragmentation of the bullets after hitting the steel.

  2. I use a lot of Barrys and MG and they are usually about +/- .4 of the stated weight. I've had a few Barrys that were more than .5 off but that is rare.

On PBA2's post, the Zero bullets I was told (by another forum member) are actually 125 instead of 124, that's why the weights are always at 125+. It's pretty crappy that Zero didn't take the time to even put a stamp or sticker on the box to let the customer know about it. Other than that, I've always heard good things about Zero bullets.

  3. Below are my chrono results using 95gr JHP and 115gr FMJ Montana Gold bullets with Hodgdon Clays (gun is an STI Steelmaster):

    95gr

Powder Charge (grains) Avg Velocity (fps) Power Factor

    3.8 1121.1 106.5

    4.0 1210.0 114.95

    4.3 1289.5 122.5

    115gr

Powder Charge (grains) Avg Velocity (fps) Power Factor

    3.8 1071.5 123.2

    4.0 1079.0 124.2

    4.3 1124.5 129.3

For steel challenge, the power factor has to be 120 minimum. Comparing the 95gr to 115gr, I would say that the 95 feels noticably softer and I can reacquire the sight picture faster. The 95's are a little loader than the 115's, but not as much as major power factor loads would be. I saw no signs of over pressure with any of these loads. I have normally shot the 3.8 gr with 115gr FMJ as my steel load, but I'm switching to the 4.3 gr with 95gr JHP. NOTE: The 3.8gr with 95gr JHP had trouble cycling in my STI Steelmaster. All other loads cycled fine.

Here is some video of me shooting the 95gr over 4.3gr Clays:

For SC, 120 is the recommended minimum due to the stop plates usually responding to that power factor. It can be lower and they respond/record the times. Anyway, if the stop plate doesn't stop the timer, there is a backup and an adjustment is made to compensate for the delay.

  4. I started out with Safariland many years ago and thought it was okay. I switched to a CR and thought it was great. I used that on my Limited/Open belt for a few years and then brought a DAA for my Production rig. I have to say that I like the DAA a tad better than the CR - not as much sliding and feels a little stiffer to me. Honestly, CR and DAA are so close in my mind, it's statistically dead even but I have to give a very slight edge to the DAA.

  5. I'm the same, try to be consistent on the patterns and not fall into the traps. We do a custom stage every month and on that one, I just go with a solid pattern. On the standard eight, I do the same order as my CF.

  6. Hi Judge,

Nope, I decided not to buy it since a google search turned up the same thing about the trigger and that's pretty important to me. I finally decided to go with a S&W M41 and I'm pretty happy so far. Still have a few issues to work out but with the amount of people who have them and after-market items available, I should be good with this.

I really do like the M4 the best and still might pick one up one day but for now, I'm going to stick with my M41 and Buckmark for Steel Challenge.

Good luck with it and let us know how it works out for you!

  7. Hello all,

I was looking for a light load for my .40 (STI Edge) to do some Steel shooting and just general light target loads. The VV manual I have says the minimum for this weight is 5.3gr. That would/should send it out at almost 1100fps. I'm wondering if anyone has tried anything lighter to get a softer, lighter load with n320? I was looking at trying maybe 4.9 or 5.0gr.

I know it is not recommended to go below/above listed charge weights but after doing this for so many years, I understand the consequences.

Thanks for any actual loads and experience with n320 and 155gr .40 loads.

  8. I GOT IT!! It doesn't work without the trigger plunger apparently!! :( When I saw the diagram of of the trigger animation on the guntalk site, I all of sudden noticed that the disconnector was not being lifted and pushed at the same time which led me to check the plunger. After looking for about 30 mins, I finally found it (it fell on the floor under my work bench). I have the pistol back together and it seems to function by dry fire (yeah, I know it's not good for it). I'm just glad it is together and ready to go back to the range.

Thanks for all the posts and especially for this animated .gif on guntalk that helped me to see what was going wrong.

I guess it would not have been a "2 minute job" if I couldn't find the plunger :)

    Thanks to all again!

  9. Hello All,

I really hate to post this but I'm about to beat my head in the wall. I took my Ruger 22/45 Mark II apart and took out the hammer, sear, etc. Now trying to get it all back together is a nightmare. I have searched on Youtube for days and googled everywhere but still I am missing something.

After I put the hammer and pivot pin back in, put the receiver back on, I push the mainspring housing in all the way (protrudes slightly through the receiver) then I try to swing the mainspring housing gently into the grip. It pushes out as I try to swing it in every time. I am holding the trigger but I noticed it's not releasing the hammer so it can't move up and out of the way but I don't see why. I know the sear (and spring) is in place and it looks correct but it seems to catch the hammer edge and not allowing it to move. I have taken it out and in several times but the same thing happens every time so I am sure it's something I'm doing/missing. I referred to this page the most, http://www.guntalk-online.com/2245detailstripping.htm and it has great pictures but it's just not working for me.

Does anyone have any advice (besides selling it or throwing it out the window :)) Yeah, I could take it to my gunsmith but he is so busy now, I hate to bother him with something that should be a two minute job.

Thanks for any help or advice...

  10. Probably not a good idea and I don't think you are saving a ton of money either. This is from their website:

"Open or Ported Guns: Ported guns cut the bullet coating as the bullet passes over the ports creating smoke and barrel fouling."

Given that and not a huge savings, I wouldn't do it.

Any one else try it and have a range report they can share??

  11. About the test with the bullet and primer, no powder - as far as I remember, that always results in a round stuck in the barrel. So far this year, I've seen three squibs and all have been lodged in the barrel. They all sound as if they did not have any powder also. BTW, these were not my loads, I was at a match each time. I've had two squibs in the last 19 years of reloading and both of those also were lodged in the barrel.

I checked my supply of WSP/WLP and did not see any tarnishing on them.

I hope Winchester can answer that question...Good luck

  12. I weighed about a dozen grabbed from a box of 2000 Zero FMJs bought within the last few months and got the same answer, 125.2+.

I am also using 4.2 of Titegroup at 1.135. They shoot very nicely. I think that Hodgson number of 1.09 would put the crimp right at the base of the ogive. The bullet can certainly extend a lot more than that. We should note though that Titegroup doesn't take up much room, so there is plenty of space for deep insertion. I read the 1.09 as simply the minimum OAL and then maximum amount of insertion. At 1.140 you are already backed well off the maximum spec OAL of 1.169.

I am in Six Mile, so we are not very far apart. We might even both be shooting at Allen Arms in Greenville or a local area IDPA match.

Yeah, I'm going out to test some more today. I have the loaded at three different lengths to test accuracy and felt recoil. Which ever feels best, most accurate, I'm just going to start loading 'em up.

I used to shoot at Allen Arms alot, now I mostly shoot in Duncan at the private range, where the USPSA matches are, Spartanburg Practical shooters. That way I can drag out the chrono, and do whatever I need to do. I haven't shot any IDPA, just sticking with the USPSA.

    Hey CZinSC,

I have been wanting to shoot the Spartanburg IPSC matches, do you go on the 1st or 4th Saturday? I might make the next one on the 1st Saturday so if I do, we can discuss this in more detail and get to know each other. Let me know, thanks...

  13. Yeah, that might be a little high. I recently weighed a few of some Barry's 155gr and they came in between 154.4 - 155.3gr. So my variance is about a grain but are all your bullets weighing the same?? That's seems a little odd that all of them are exactly the same. How many bullets did you weigh?

  14. Volumes of loads on the site. Hear are a couple of my loads. Which one is best for you depends on the comp you have etc.

    AA#7 10.5gr w/125gr JHP Zero WSP set 1.240

    N350 8.0gr w/125gr JHP Zero WSP Set 1.240

8.3gr TruBlue w/125gr JHP Zero WSP Set 1.240

8.5gr Silhouette w/125gr JHP Zero WSP Set 1.240

    7.3gr IMR7625 W/125gr JHP Zero WSP Set 1.240

    7.8gr 3N37 w/125gr JHP Zero WSP Set 1.240

    8.8gr HS6 w/125gr JHP Zero WSP Set 1.240

    10gr N105 w/125gr JHP Zero WSP Set 1.240

I've also used IMR4756, AutoComp but don't recall the loads.

I have not tried LongShot, HS7, or 3N38, yet. I have always wanted to try Blue Dot it smells so good.

Looking at the first port wall in the comp if it is leaning forward go for the powder with more grains to make the load aka more gas if the wall is perpendicular to the path of the bullet then you can use a faster powder. Poppel holes can negate logic.

    Hey Coco,

Nice loads! Out of all of these, what is your favorite and why? Thanks
