  1. My decision to go with the LNL was mostly economical...it had all the features of a 650 for significantly less cash, and the free bullets didn't hurt. The guys I shoot with gave me the opportunity to play with a 550 and with a LNL, and there didn't seem to be much comparison...for the money, the LNL won hands down. There were also little things, like a retaining spring rather than buttons (not hugely important, I know, but I would lose at least one of those damn buttons every time I tweaked a load) and ease/cost of caliber conversion. It also helped that no one had anything but praise for Hornady's customer service. Then again, maybe I just don't like Kool-Aid
  2. The Sentry is an interesting option, but I had kind of ruled it out because the SC website lists it at almost $1500...is there a discount I don't know about? Also, I'm pretty sure there's nothing in .40 left in the Kimber lineup...a couple of 10mm that could be re-barreled, but no .40's. Do they have new offerings for 2010?
  3. I've been looking for a .40 as well, and the current options are limited to say the least. My reasons are purely practical from a reloading standpoint - .45 brass is twice as much as .40 and I'd have to start the primer search all over again for large primers (currently only loading 9mm). The only options off the shelf seem to be STI and Fusion, and the used Springfields and Kimbers are hard to come by and are generally over-priced when you do find them (might just be my opinion as a poor graduate student ). The Dan Wesson SSC seemed to be the best bang for your buck, but they have all but disappeared after being discontinued in January...
  4. You better make it back, slacker
  5. Doesn't sound like it (see here), but it might be worth following up...
  6. Most of the time WWB is ok, but we had a guy chrono just under minor PF with it last summer.
  7. Welcome to the sport! This is by far the best place to get your questions answered. Edited because Graham beat me to it...
  8. This is exactly what I use...works great!
  9. Amazon lists the shipping weight at 30.2 lbs...will try to remember to measure the box when I get home...
  10. I'm using aerosol One-Shot, and I agree that it seems unlikely...I just know that the method of applying lube was the only thing I changed between a batch full of squibs and the perfectly good rounds that I've loaded since...
  11. I questioned it myself for a long time, but it seems to be the only explanation. I was lubing the brass using a ziplock bag...dump the brass in, spray it down with lube, seal it up and toss it around a little. I think I ended up with lube inside some of the cases, especially those that were oriented with the case mouth toward the top of the bag. I assume that the lube dried in and around the flash hole, preventing ignition of the powder charge. There have been some other posts related to the same problem, and when I started spraying lube into the bag before adding the brass or folding the bag around the brass and spraying the lube onto the sides of the bag, the problem went away.
  12. Unfortunately, no, that's not always the case. I just started loading and ran into a problem with case lube causing squibs (or at least that's my best explanation after ruling everything else out). Gun went "click" in the middle of a stage and I treated it like a misfire ('cause that's what it felt like...note that the RO didn't catch it either) and racked a new round into the chamber. Lots of smoke and some sparks out of the chamber on the second shot and a stuck slide due to a bulged barrel...I got lucky...could have been a lot worse. Haven't had any problems since, but the paranoia hasn't gone away yet...
  13. I just started loading on an LNL-AP and I have absolutely no complaints. It comes with both small and large rotors now, so no need to purchase an extra. I run Lee dies on mine using separate stations for expanding and powder drop. The Hornady powder-through-expander does supposedly have some issues, but someone developed an alternative that works great, according to a buddy that uses one. The micrometer powder adjust would be nice to have, but isn't necessary for me yet.
  14. How did the test with the Tripp mags go? I'm also trying to find reliable 9mm 10-rounders...
  15. Congratulations, Dave and Darcy!
  16. Thanks for the help everyone...will be sure to run the classification update when I enter this week's scores... Has anyone had any luck using EZWS to compile end-of-the-season stats?
  17. I was playing with EZWS trying to figure out one problem and discovered another... Original Problem: Is there a way to combine the results from multiple matches in EZWS to generate overall statistics at the end of the season? Unrelated Problem: I noticed the Match>Update Classifications function for the first time (my introduction to using EZWS was a fast tutorial including only the bare essentials for entering and posting scores each week). Should I be downloading this file from USPSA every time I score a match? Hopefully I haven't screwed anything up too badly by not doing so... I didn't see anything about this stuff in previous posts, but feel free to smack me upside the head and point me in the right direction if I missed it... Thanks!
  18. Well done on Wednesday, Dave! I looked at the overalls after entering the scores and had to go back and make sure that I had entered all of your scores correctly...granted, I haven't been doing this for very long, but I've never seen that kind of gap between 1st and 2nd...at least not at our club... I suppose getting three cracks at stage 4 might have helped a little
  19. Welcome to the forum! +1 for the Hornady LNL AP Definitely worth considering (better bang for your buck, imho) even though it's not blue
  20. I'm sure some folks from the Cities and some more experienced shooters will chime in here, but in the mean time, you could check out www.mnuspsa.org and www.mnguntalk.com to find a few clubs and/or instructors... The guys at Pine Island are great with new shooters (speaking from experience), but the club is a bit of a drive from Anoka...
  21. I'd be really interested to hear if anyone has had any experience with the 9mm version...
  22. Unfortunately, the odds are that Chuck is right... Most programs make multiple changes to the registry when they're installed...tracking them all down can be near impossible...you can definitiely install the hard drive into the new machine, but it's unlikely that the program will run... On the bright side, there is software that can help you out...a guy I work with has had good luck with PCmover (http://www.laplink.com/), but there are other programs, too...they're designed for copying everything from one machine to another (basically cloning an existing machine), but they might work for just one program... With all of that said...there are programs that are truly self contained and will run anywhere...you could try just copying the program folder to the new machine and try running the program...if it runs, you're good to go...if not, see above
  23. I, too, went through the same process around this time last year...ended up with a XD9 and love it! I've also heard good things about the M&P, but haven't shot one... FWIW...I liked the fact that the XD came with the essentials (holster and mag holder) for USPSA...picked up the pistol, 2 extra mags and an extra mag holder (selling around here for ~$30 for the set), and I was off to the races...granted, it's not the best gear in the world, but it's definitely good enough to get you started without having to drop a lot of extra cash... Just my $0.02...
