  1. Shot this classifier last weekend.  Personally I like this kind of classifier more than the typical stand-and-shoot classifiers.  Biggest challenge for me was remembering which of the two middle targets to engage from either position.

I debated on how to shoot it.  Shoot all three from up range then move, or go left-right and shoot one of the middle ones on the move.    Ended up on String 1 shooting left then right and engaged one of the middle targets on the move, reload then left-middle-right.  On String 2, went left-middle-right, reload while retreating, then right-middle-left (with a slight pause on the middle array as my brain caught up and confirmed that I was shooting at the correct target...).

To keep it simple on the middle array  I decided to always shoot the left one first and the right one after the reload.

On the squad I was shooting on, one poor guy forgot the reload on String 1, another confused soul put 6 hits on the left middle and 2 on the right middle.  Bit of a brain teaser...

  2. I’m using the Carbon Arms ratchet attachment with my ELS belt.  Got rid of the two studs on the end of the ELS outer belt as the studs were no longer needed IMO.  I took the end of the belt apart (peeled the layers apart to unscrew the studs) but in retrospect I probably could have just cut off the end with the studs and called it good.  I still use the inner belt it came with, but really like the functionality of the ratchet.

Is the JP bolt sensitive to the magazine angle?  I mean does it have to be completely perfect for it to chamber a round or does it allow for a little leeway? Sorry it's a silly question, but I am running into this issue from time to time.

Good question.  I haven’t noticed any issues with magazine angle, tho I will say that if Shooting prone I mono-pod off the mag I sometimes get jams -but I think that has more to do with pushing the mag farther into the receiver than changing the mag angle.

2MoreChains, this is really a great idea and something I have been thinking about doing at our club. Does your club require you to draw from concealment in your outlaw match? Or is it up to the shooters if they want to use a cover garment or not? Personally, I do not want to allow cover garments as that put us back in IDPA territory but I am also not against it if that is what the shooter wants to do. I know that there are several shooters that compete in USPSA shooting with appendix style holsters and their shirt un-tucked to cover their pistol and mags. There used to be a guy that would be on Ben Stoeger's pod cast that I believe made Master shooting with an appendix holster and his shirt un-tucked in Limited division. I do not remember his name or all the details but I do remember watching some videos of him shoot and was very impressed with his skills shooting this way.

Now just so that we are clear it is not my intention to create a division or anything else that requires USPSA shooters to draw from concealment or anything of that nature. What I am proposing is a division where the guy that wants to shoot his Glock 19 or CZ P10C is NOT competing against  someone shooting a custom 2011 in Limited or a tricked out Shadow 2 in Production.

We’ve only done it once, so it’s not like anything is set in stone.  But the basic premise is to shoot stages with your carry gun and gear in a run ‘n gun situation.  We did require concealment last time as that’s how most people around here carry.

  5. Seeing as you are a MD of a club, why not do a test of this concept by offering a match designed expressly for carry guns and see what happens?  Go outlaw for a weekend and make up your own divisions, i.e fullsize, compact, subcompact.  Encourage people to set aside their competition guns for a weekend and get some practice shooting their EDC gun using their EDC gear.

My club did this last year and it was pretty well received.   Sure there were some pre-match gamesmanship with guys proposing to show up wearing their Open guns under an overcoat, but in the end there were mostly Shields, G43s, G26s, Commander and Officer-sized 1911’s, and a handful of .380 guns that got shot and folks had fun with them.

We’re doing it again on the 5th Saturday of this month.

  6. I’ve been shooting my 6.5 RPR for a little over a year, more practice than matches at this point but have been hitting some PRS when I can.  On prone stages I get my hits (or a reasonable percentage) but I’m getting owned on the positional stages shooting off tires and barricades.  That’s where I need work.

Mine’s still stock, other than adding a suppressor.  That said, the more I shoot the rifle the less enamored I am with Ruger’s stock.  I sense a Magpul PRS in my future and building my own barricade that I can practice off of.

  7. Typo or intentional?  New version of App D4 says 1 1/2”.  Current RB says 1/2”.

    Feb 9, 2018 version:

20: Holster and Magazine Holder restrictions • Suitable for everyday use.  Race Gun type holsters prohibited • May not be manufactured or cut lower than, and must cover the slide up to, 1 1/2” below the ejection port (belt slide “Yaqui” type holster is exempt • Revolver holsters open no lower than halfway down the cylinder • The drop offset type holster is allowed in Production division as long as the heel of the butt of the gun is above the belt per 5.2.7.2, and the rest of the criteria are met • Each magazine must be contained individually within the magazine pouch.  Magazines may not be retained through magnetic means.

    Currently in the 2014 RB:

20: Holster and magazine holder restrictions •Suitable for everyday use. “Race gun” type holster prohibited. •May not be manufactured or cut lower than, and must cover the slide up to, 1/2” below the ejection port (belt slide “Yaqui” type holster exempt). •Revolver holsters open no lower than halfway down the cylinder. •The drop offset type holster is allowed in production Division as long as the heel of the butt of the gun is above the belt per

  8. At my local club there’s a number of people shoot stock STIs.  Seems hit and miss, some have not had to do anything with their guns (other than springs and figure out their reloads), others have had to do some fine tuning to the gun, mags, trigger to make it comp-ready.  I bought a used 2011 to get started.  Shot that gun for over a year while formulating what I wanted in a custom 2011, and ultimately went that route.  But my gunbuilder is local and shoots at the same matches which has been very helpful and convenient over the years.

  9. Like everyone else is saying, a 2011 in 9mm is probably better suited to 3-gun, Steel Challenge, or even IDPA.  That’s kind of why I got into one.  But every now and then I’ll shoot Limited-minor at a local USPSA match for S&G’s.  Did so last weekend and was pretty competitive probably bc that match had a bunch of hoser stages and steel where the diff between major and minor was less pronounced and I could run the gun pretty aggressively.

The light recoil makes it such a fun gun to shoot.

    Then printing comes into play..?

Not with the right holster.  I carry AIWB with a wedge that pushes the gun butt into my stomach.  It also rides more or less where your belt buckle would be, so unless you’re an emaciated stick the +2 doesn’t extend beyond my body enough to print.

  11. After reading this thread I looked down by ULW.  Yup, there’s some build up, most of the concentration on the inside of the shroud is just past the end of the barrel.  The build up kinda looks like a bad powder coat job.  Oh well, I’ll keep an eye on it and go after it with a brush now and then.  Really liking the ULW.

  12. RO-ing while on a squad is not a big deal.  Nice to be able to trade off with at least one other person when I rotate into the deep hole position.  At Lvl1 it doesn’t even need to be a certified RO, just somebody who you know to be squared away and you’re still there as the “CRO” to make a call if it comes to that.

RM-ing, now that’s a different deal.  It’s like being the 1st shooter on the squad every stage, but without the benefit of a walk-thru.  Or worse yet, you sat there long enough to come up with a stage plan only to get called away to another stage for something.  But hey, if I’m RM-ing I’ve got other things on my brain rather than being uber competitive.
