  1. I've never had good luck with manufacturer provided finger grooves on grips. The finger notch on the A2 pistol grip and Hogue's rubber wrap around grips for the 1911 come to mind. That said, first time I put my hand on a Gen 3 Glock I was pleasantly surprised at how well the finger grooves felt.

  2. Just picked up a Trojan 9mm for an ESP gun. My question is, after adding an ambi safety and S&A magwell, will I be flirting with the 43 ounce weight limit? Does the aluminum S&A make much of a difference? The gun has the stock full length guide rod.

My Trojan (5" .45 acp) weighed in right at 42.0 oz, with a steel S&A magwell, ambi safety, steel FLGR, G-10 Lazza grips, and a CMC magazine. So in that configuration it is fine for USPSA Single Stack Division (43 oz), but I switched the steel magwell to the S&A aluminum one to be under 41 oz for IDPA's CDP Div. I'm not sure what the weight difference is between the steel and aluminum magwell, but I'm pretty sure it's at least an ounce.

I'd be willing to wager that you'll be under 43 oz because G-10 grips weigh quite a bit more than the stock wooden grips.

  3. The PACT III Club timer is still a good one. It's easy to use, easy to switch back and forth between random delay and instant start, and straight forward enough to set par time for training. Also convenient to clip it to your belt and just by looking down you see the big display. Like other timers, the beep is loud so you can hear it with muffs on, but you can stuff an earplug into the hole where the beeper is to make it quieter when dry-firing.

There are other timers out there that are just as good, but IMO the PACT timer is one of the good ones.

  4. Overlapping the CR inner belt on the rightside (if you're right handed) as opposed to in the front will also help move that holster out to the side a little. Standing with your right hip cocked outwards at the start position may help as well (hey, the WSB just says "standing with heels on X's, hands at sides...)

Guess I'll throw in my two cents on SS gear:

STI Trojan, .45 acp Few minor mods (S&A magwell, FO front sight, grip tape, 14# recoil and 17# main spring).

    CR Speed Belt

    Comp-Tac holster

Three Blade-tech double mag pouchs, but have a couple singles from COM on order to try out

    CMC mags

  5. So based on the majority of the replies, Ahab's stage (El Pres w/ Bill Drill on T4 at the end) would be fine, and does not go against the rules. It doesn't place a big burden on either the shooter or SO to "remember" which one gets 6 because it's the last target, is probably set off to the side from T1-T3 array, and one could also paint it with the gun silhouette to help make it even more obvious. I like it. If you don't mind, I may "borrow" the idea for May's match.

    Thanks!

  6. Well, all the parts came in over the last couple of weeks, and I'll be debuting in Limited Div this Sunday. Got some great ideas from this thread, so thanks for that.

    Gun: Gen-3 G35

Warren Competition rear with fiber optic front sight. IIRC, it's the .215T x .115"W. Shoots to POA. Love that sight.

ISMI steel rod w/ 15 lb ISMI spring. Had to replace the capture screw since the original one is now down-range somewhere... I didn't locktite it because I was testing different weight springs... But it is now!

25 cent trigger job. My trigger finger is saying it may have helped a little, but that's subjective...

    Decal Grip kit

ICE magwell (regular weight) Boy, that sucker really helps with reloads and my grip...

Two Arredondo +5 extensions (I can get 20 rounds in them)

One Dawson +5 extension (can only load 18). I've beveled the follower, extension, cleaned the inside of the mag tube, loaded to 18 and let sit... still can only load 18 rnds. Too bad, because I really like how the Dawson extensions are made.

    CR Speed versa pouches

    Comp-Tac holster

I've been shooting the Glock in as many matches as I can over the last month to get used to it, and function test all the mods. So far so good. I will say that stage doping with 20+1 rounds is going to be a hoot after shooting Single Stack for the last year and a half! My wife was with me the last time I was at the range, and I quote: "How many rounds does that thing hold???"

  7. I played around with three different guide rods and spring weights recently when I was setting up a new G35 for Limited. Like Nik said, it's purely a subjective thing, but I was able to find a preference based on my hit factor while shooting bill drills.

I used the stock OEM recoil guide rod with the 17 lb stock spring, an ISMI steel rod w/ 13 and 15 lb ISMI springs, and a Jager polymer rod with the same ISMI springs.

At the end of the day I was consistently getting the fastest time and most alpha with the 15 lb spring, but didn't see any appreciable difference between the ISMI or Jager rods in my times or accuracy. That said, I left the ISMI rod in there for Limited Div, but will switch to the Jager if I ever decide to shoot the Glock in IDPA. The 13 lb spring felt like the gun was "all over the place", 17 lb stock spring was fine, but the strings with the 15 lb spring were consistently the best.

  8. I think you'll find that not only is it a problem with the shooters remembering what is what but the SOs as well might have a hard time keeping it straight with everything else they are required to do.

    Corey,

Good point, but I think that is something that can be mitigated by making it the first or last target (not one in the middle), and painting it with the pistol or AK silhouette so as to make it as obvious as possible. I'm with you though as far as keeping it KISS.

Thanks guys. Good to know that Nationals has mixed up the number of hits.

ETA: nice avatar! Were you "celebrating" after burning down a stage or zeroing it?

  9. Hope this isn't something that has already been discussed before, but was wondering how you guys interpret what's on page 50 of the 2005 rulebook regarding mixing the number of hits required on targets within the same string.

Here is what it says on page 50 of Appendix 5:

Requiring multiple hits (i.e. 3-6 hits) on targets simulates real life

encounters and should be encouraged. However, mixing the

number of hits required on targets within the same string leads to

procedural penalties and should be discouraged. The same goes

for mixing strings requiring a 2-2-2 engagement with a 1-1-2-1-1

    type engagement.

As I try to divine the "intent" of this guidance, it seems like they are trying to keep it from becoming a memory stage where you have to remember which of the targets is to be shot differently from the rest. That makes sense. But I've also seen/shot stages where all the targets but the first or last target required two hits, and the one that was different was painted with the gun silhouette to indicate that it required a different number of hits (i.e. 6 hits for example).

Am I reading this correctly that while IDPA discourages stage designers from creating stages that rely on memory, the rules don't specifically prohibit the mixing of different number of hits in the CoF? Operative word being "discouraged".

I recently got questioned on one of my stages at a match. It was a short CoF where T1 (which was at arms length) got shot twice in the chest from retention, then once in the head freestyle. Then T2-T4 (5-7 yds out) got 2 each in the chest freestlyle. But we couldn't find anything that specifically prohibited the practice, other than what it says in Appendix 5.

IMO, requiring the 3 hits on the first target was not a big burden memory-wise, and do not think a lot of people had any difficulty following the CoF. Had it been specified that T3 got the three hits, I could see that being a problem and a bunch of people probably would have gotten procedurals for not following the CoF. Am I on a slippery slope?

    Thanks!

  10. im wanting to start shooting my g17 in production. could someone recomend a holster and belt combo? ive read good things about cr speed and da. im going to atempt to make mag pouches before buying any. last question how many mags do people usually carry in the production class? thanks

A lot of this is going to come down to personal preference, and what you like. Since you've already been researching CR and Double Alpha products, it sounds like you're wanting to go down the path of the inner and outer belt. As you've probably read, the main advantage is so you can leave the holster and mag pouches attached to the outer belt, and velcro it on each time instead of threading them thru the belt and around belt loops. Go for it! I have the CR belt and like it. Plus I can use the inner belt for IDPA.

Holster: same deal on the personal preference. I've had good luck with Comp-Tac and Blade-tech, but there are others out there that are probably just as good. If you shoot IDPA (or think you might), you look for one that is legal for IDPA as well as USPSA. Both the Comp-Tac and Blade-Tech OWB holsters are legal for both, but the Blade-tech DOH is only legal for USPSA Production Div.

When I shoot production, I run with 4 mags on the belt and a starter mag loaded to 11 in the front pocket. I started out with two double pouches, but lately have been buying singles since I think they conform to my waist better, and I think two singles work out better than one double in IDPA so you can arrange them on either side of a belt loop.

    Good luck!

  11. My two cents is for the Comp-Tac. My wife uses a Blade-Tech, but she got that because of the DOH. I like both, but in comparing Blade-Tech's StingRay and Comp-Tac's belt tunnel, I give Comp-Tac the nod based on personal preference. Probably one of those ubiquitous Ford vs Chevy things...

But, was flipping thru the Jan/Feb Front Sight, and saw that that article on the Steel Challenge World Championships. Seems that demographic prefers Blade-Tech over Comp-Tac (9 to 2). 'just saying...

  12. Jesse,

Thanks for that. I took apart the Dawson extension when I got home from work and did some light beveling on the inside edge of the aluminum extension this time. It took a couple of tries, but I can fit 18 rnds now.

On the other hand, I do have a couple Arredondo's coming in the mail, along w/ a Warren rear / Dawson fiber optic sight combo. Three 20's and a back-up mag holding 18 ought to do me.

  13. Very nice! We share some of the same 3-Gun tastes. I'm running a Bennelli M2 with Nordic-Comp extension, and my AR from the barrel nut forward is also all JP Enterprise and VTac parts. I'll probably start using my G35 as my 3-Gun pistol purely because I can carry 60 rnds with just 3 mags. I'm running out of room on my belt if I stay with the 1911 and all the mags I would need, plus three 6-rnd shot shell carriers, and AR mag pouch...!

BTW, I got and installed an Arredondo +5 and a Dawson +5 mag extension for the Glock mags. Even doing the DP beveling trick to the rear of the follower I can only get 17 rnds in the Dawson equipped magazine. I can get 20 in the Arredondo without breaking a sweat. Any ideas?

  14. Thanks for starting this thread because I'm trying to do the same thing with my G35.

So far mine is stock with the exception of a 15 lb recoil spring. I did some drills on the clock right after I got the gun using the stock 17 lb spring and two different ISMI springs (a 13# and 15#) using an after-market ISMI captured guide rod. The timer was saying that I shot better using the 15 b spring and it did seem like I was tracking the front sight better, so I'm gonna go with that one for a while.

I shot my first match with it today, and did alright -about on par what I usually do. I shot in Production Div since the rest of my gear is already set up that way, and plus I wanted to shoot it fairly stock for a bit to help decide what I really needed before buying a bunch of stuff for Limited. First off, I found out that the grip was a little too slick for SH and WH shooting, but can fix that easily enough with a decal grip kit I picked up the same time I got the gun.

For Limited Div, I've got a few things coming: One each of the Arredondo and Dawson +5 extensions, and a couple CR Speed mag pouches. I've read mixed reviews on both extenders, so will just have to try them out for myself and see where I end up. Once I figure which one works the best for me, I'll probably get a couple more for a total of four.

The stock Glock sights really don't do much for me. They're not bad, but nothing to brag about. So I think my next order is going to be the Warren competition rear sight set with DP fiber optic front sight. If memory serves, the front sight is .215" tall x .115" wide, which is a width I like on 1911's. I can also see doing the 25 cent trigger job in my near future.

I did have a chance to check out an ICE magwell on a G35 today, and I'm kind of leaning in that direction as well for Limited Div. The only real question in my mind right now is the standard one or the heavy one.

Lastly, I'm getting tired of changing up my belt back and forth from SS Div, so I suspect that I'll probably be getting a new CR Speed belt one of these days so as to have a dedicated belt for the Glock.
