  1. The more modifications that are permitted, the the higher the perceived cost of this division will become. Potential new members will think that in order to be competitive they will need to spend more money on customization.

I think Production is popular because it is seen as a low cost division, you can win matches with a stock 'out of the box' gun. The current rules may seem a little obtuse to some but the division is growing rapidly with that rule-set.

I hear you that it could potentially open a door that somebody can drive a truck thru, but stippling or undercutting a Glock is an expensive modification???? I suppose if you paid somebody to do it for you that would cost money, but for $9.99 you can buy a soldering iron and some sand paper and DIY. Hardly what I consider a big deal. Heck, Prod shooters probably do more customizing to get their holster and belt just right!

  2. Interesting conundrum and I agree it seems to be a grey area. I'd be interested to hear what NROI has to say about this one.

My first thought was you can't unring the bell, but as was pointed out in the example of a foot fault if for whatever reason the shooter is given a reshoot then the procedural goes away (provided they don't fault the line in the reshoot).

  3. Fair enough but for "less unusual" movement scenarios, waiting to reload until you are entering a position isn't a great plan ...

Check. If moving forward or laterally I want to initiate the reload and get it done within the first few steps. In the retreat/then move forward scenario I punch the mag release early on then shove in the mag once I've rounded the corner. There were a couple of stages like this at Utah State last weekend, and I did just that.

I have shot stages where it was retreating all the way and sometimes you just have to do what you gotta do (a stage at 2014 Area 1 comes to mind). In those instances I keep the gun up high pointed over my shoulder while moving to the rear and shove the mag in on the go.

  4. Just asking what people see as the unintended consequences of lifting the restriction on grip modifications and stippling.

Are we really going against the 'spirit' of Production if we allowed somebody to stipple the trigger guard, undercut the trigger a little, grind off finger grooves, or maybe add some stippling to the frame above the trigger?

I wouldn't mind undercutting the trigger guard on my G34 a little since the gap does not fit my middle finger very well, but currently that is verboten.

  5. I've had the same issue. I can't tell from your pics, but is the top pic the one of the Edge? See how the beavertail on the grip safety has been scallop relief cut? That's typical of the stock STI BTGS. It allows the gun to sit deeper in your hand for a higher hold, but for me it causes a hot spot in the web of my hand from that corner right behind the thumb safety. Based on your pic of the Eagle it looks like somebody at one point installed a different BTGS that does not have the relief cuts in the beavertail that eliminates the corner, which explains why the Eagle is more comfortable.

I remove the stock BTGS from all of my STIs and install Ed Brown's. The EB requires some fitting to blend it in but otherwise it is a good fit.

  6. My stock .40SW 2011 Eagle did not require any chamber or throat reaming to accept 1.180" OAL and moly FP 180 gr bullets. It fed them just fine. On a couple of custom builds my GS had to ream the chamber and throat a little.

I'm shooting 180 gr FP bullets from Leatherhead which uses the same hi-tek coating as Bayou. 4.6 gr of N320 loaded to 1.180" results in 170-171 PF out of a 5" or 175 PF out of my 6".

  7. 90% of my 3-gun shotgun shooting is with #7.5 shot 1 1/8 oz 2.75" loads. Usually Estate brand shells. I'd use bulk pack Wally World stuff but my M2 doesn't always like them (lite strikes). I usually also bring a box of hi-brass 1 1/4 oz #6 shot for knock overs that are out there a ways or for MGM spinners. As far as slugs, it depends on your SG and which ones hit POA. 1 oz Fiocchi seems to work pretty good in my gun and have been reasonable cost-wise and don't kick too hard. The Walmart 1,600 fps stuff is cheap but it shoots like I golf (very poorly).

For me, deciding which choke to run was a bigger question with SG shooting. I settled on a lite Modified for majority of the stages, but every now and then will install a Modified. But M-choke and slugs have not been a good mix in my gun -the modified choke really screws with POA/POI.

  8. I've had a few guns built by a local GS and I kept them in the white for a good while until I was certain I wasn't going to need anything ground/hacked/modified. After 6 months to a year-ish I sent one off for hardchroming, had another cerakoted by a local shop, and the other one is still in the white. I'll get around to having it refinished one of these days... but the other day I noticed a hard corner in the back strap that needs some attention from Mr. Dremel, so glad I didn't have it refinished.

I live in a dry climate, so worries about it rusting are minimal. That said, I wipe down the guns when I get home but that's about it. Clean them once a month or so.

  9. Well, I travel a fair amount for work and making sure I have the right chargers for the various devices has been a challenge. I've looked at those rechargeable chargers and may have to get one. I think I can boil it down to two chargers now: the same charger for the two iPhones and iPad, and the mini USB for the MiFI device.

  10. I'm lucky to have enough components to see me through MOST of the year for MOST of the calibers I reload for. It seems that some powders are available, but you have to - kind of - take what you can get, so the crisis is not over. I miss the days of being able to just order EXACTLY what I want.

Agree^, especially the last part. But what keeps me shooting is I'm sitting on a modest stock of powder and periodically a LGS gets in a bulk order that keeps me from getting too low. That said, I've had to experimented with some alternates in the event my primary go-to powder gets low or runs out. Gotta do whatcha gotta do...

  11. Like a lot of you, I have a handful of electronic devices that need charging. To keep everything juiced up I have a rats nest of different chargers, each with a different cable.

Life just got easier when I upgraded my iPhone 4S to the 5S. Tomorrow my work phone (Blackberry) is getting turned in for an iPhone 5S as well. I mainly use an iPad Mini at home. So praise be to the gods of wall/car chargers, now the same charger will power all three devices!

Damn, just realized the Gen 1 iPad and Nooks my club uses for Practiscore will still require 2 separate chargers... oh well, I only get those out twice a month for our local matches. I can deal...

  12. You may want to keep in mind that most 1911/2011 parts need fitting. Then there is also the murphy factor that the part-which-breaks will not be the part(s) that you have backups for...

That said, this is my partial list of stuff I have rattling around in my range bag:

-Little screws that hold the 2011 trigger to the frame

    -Extra springs

-Height elevation screw and springs for the Bomar-style rear

    -Extra fitted/tested extractor

-Extra fitted right-side ambi thumb safety

-Extra fiber optic tubes plus a lighter and nail clipper

All of the above are things that at one point another broke or were lost at a match. The irony is ever since I got spares I have yet to need them.

  13. Where is the best place to find used STI's and what are the common problems with used ones. Can they be recondttioned

I think this forum is probably one of the better places to buy a used STI. I bought my first STI (2011) used in 2010 in the For Sale subforum and proceeded to shoot it a ton. As to common problems with used guns, its hard to say since it depends on how hard it was used and cared for. Over the years I've had a few parts break, then in 2012 I had a make-over done to it and replaced the hammer/sear/disco and safeties. I kept the original parts for back-up.

Just about everything on the gun can be replaced if that is what you mean by reconditioning.

  14. Agree ^. What is the intended purpose? Bull barrels in the 5" configuration are not legal for USPSA SS division or IDPA's ESP. OK for USPSA L-10, Steel Challenge, and probably 3-gun though.

Personally I think a 9mm bushing barrel is thick enough as it is, not sure you need the extra weight of a full on bull barrel.
