  1. I think ZZT is onto something here. Coat the arm of the grip safety with some dykem and then start pulling the trigger in different ways (middle, low, high) to see if you can induce the same kind of binding. Then check for wear marks in the dykem. If ZZT is correct, you will probably need to file a little off the underside of the arm. A few strokes with a file may be all that you need.

  2. I shot SS with a STI Trojan in .45 for my first couple of years in this game, then shot Limited for the next four years. Last year I wanted to get back into SS and decided to go .40 primarily for logistical reasons. I already have a boatload of .40 components, it basically the same load as my Limited gun, and at make-ready I don't need to use a barney mag to get 8+1. Is all that a big deal? Nope, just logistical convenience like I mentioned.

Finding the right .40 mags did take some experimenting. Initially I tried the 9 rnd Tripp Cobra .40 mag (flex follower and .40 mag body) and had a few issues with the followers popping out the top at slide lock. The .40 Tripp Cobras have a spacer inside which limits the OAL to about 1.160" (I like to load 1.180"). I even tried some Wilson ETMs in .45 with mixed results, and ended up getting the Tripp "Corey" mag which is basically a 10-rnd 10mm magazine with the Tripp hybrid follower. I haven't had any mag-related issues since I started using those and now recommend them to anybody who has a .40 1911.

I agree that .40 1911s can be a little finicky, but nothing that can't be resolved. The feed ramp as it came from Kart was too steep and my GS had to cut the angle back a little. Once he did that it ran like a champ. I've got maybe 7-8K thru the gun right now, and the weekend before SS Nats the elevation screw on my STI bomar rear sight sheared off while in a class. No biggy, I had spares (and I think the reason it broke was the set screw got loose). Then on Thursday of SSN on Stage 3 my barrel link broke mid-way thru the stage. Fortunately I had the .45 Trojan plus mags and ammo in my buddy's truck so was able to swap out guns and shot the remaining 12 stages with the old fo-five. Other than caliber the two guns are pretty much set up the same (sights, trigger, feel) so no real issues other than bombing Stage 3. On Friday while hanging out at the range I ran into Jason Chandless, the gunsmith from the Springfield Armory Custom Shop and he hooked me up with a new barrel link. He also gave the gun a once-over and said he didn't see any reason why the link broke and suspected just a bad part.

I'm hoping this is the last of the problems for a while with the .40 gun because I really like it. I shot some SC last night with it and it ran just fine with the new barrel link, and plan on shooting it at the Sectional match at the end of May and Area 1 in June. Though the .45 Trojan will also be making the trip as the back-up gun...

  3. This was my first SSN and first time to PASA as well. Its a nice range, and coming from the high desert of Idaho where we mainly shoot in gravel pits it was a really nice change to shoot in a wooded environment (read: shade) and first time for me shooting on grass in the bays.

Overall I enjoyed the match (I shot Thursday and was lucky enough not to get rained on when I shot) and I thought the stages were fine. A few more targets here and there, and maybe a higher overall round count would have been nice considering the distance I traveled, but it wouldn't have changed how I finished or whether I would attend or not.

I thought the match organizers and staff did a fine job, and ran a very efficient and fun match. I'd happily shoot the match again.

  4. I'm using the BOSS hanger but with a COM holster. I like how sturdy the BOSS hanger is and the wide range of adjustments you can make on it. I did look at the PDR, but the biggest selling point of the BOSS for me was the ability to index my thumb on the safety when I draw. I'm also using the BOSS for single stack and may also get one for my 3-gun belt.

  5. Based on things I heard about the SP-01 mags, I pretty much reserve those just for dry-fire (loaded with dummies) and use the MecGar 17 rnders for live fire.

You think Nampa was dusty? Try Southern Utah or the Parma-powder in Parma, ID.

  6. I once had a Warren/Sevigney sit combo with those dimensions on a Glock 35. Up close it was great, but for distance shooting there was too much daylight in the rear notch for my liking so I changed them out for .105" front and .125" rear.

I too have a BHP and several years ago I had a .100" Dawson front and a .125" Heinie Slant Pro rear installed. I like that sight picture for a carry gun. My comp guns all have a .100" front and .115" rear.

  7. Usually when my primer bar fails to pick up a primer it means its time to clean the thing... I used to switch back and forth between .45acp and .40 a lot, which means I was switching primer bars. While it was a part I would clean it.

Now that I mainly shoot .40 and 9mm, I have to remind myself to disassemble and clean periodically. Brian, our host, has some tips for keeping the priming system operational, and it involves cleaning with one of those green brillo pads. I sometimes give the bar a quick spritz of Hornady One Shot.

If your press is new it may need a little more frequent cleaning until it 'breaks in'. I try to visually look at the primer cup to see if there is a primer in there, and most times I can feel when the primer seats on the forward press.

  8. I went .40 last year in SS primarily for logistical reasons. I also shoot Limited with a .40 2011 so can use the same ammo and .40 components are slightly cheaper. I also don't have to change the shell holder or primer bar on my 550 when switching between .40 and 9mm (which is the other caliber I shoot a lot in Prod, 3-gun, or SC). Making ready is also easier, load 9 in the first mag and rack. No need to barney.

Like I said, its mainly logistical reasons. But I suppose the other part of all that is after shooting Limited for a couple of years I found I liked the recoil of .40 more than .45 (snap vs a push).

That said, a 9mm 1911 is just fun to shoot... I may have to get one at some point to round out the collection.

I also agree, stage design can have a big impact on deciding between major or minor in SS.

  9. I dry fire with mags I don't care about. Reason being, constantly ejecting mags that are loaded with dummy rounds can be hard on the feed lips. Yeah, the mags I use for competition are gonna hit the ground during a match, but my dry-fire mags get way more abuse since I'm dry firing several nights a week and doing a lot of reload drills whereas I may only live fire once or twice per week at a match and a practice session. In reality the number of mags we drop in a 5-6 stage match is probably less than one dry-fire session.

  10. Another N320 user, but got my hands on 4 lbs of ETR this winter. I've been using that for loading practice rounds but lately my testing has shown it to give pretty decent std deviations and I haven't seen any signs of it being temp sensitive. I got mine from Leatherhead Bullets since they are a dealer, local to me, and the price is good.

  11. Believe it or not, I've found ETR7 to be pretty close in recoil, cleanliness, and powder charge weight.

4.7 gr of N320 is pretty comparable to 4.8 gr of ETR7 and both yield about 170 PF.

4.2 gr of N320 and 4.3 gr of ETR7 is pretty close, both are about 130-132 PF.

Std deviations with N320 is a little better than ETR7, but I have been able to get into the low teens with ETR7.

  12. Shoot your Limited gun in L10 with your Prod buds at the next match to see if you like shooting stages in increments of 10 rnds. Hell, download to minor if you want to be scored the same as them and move your mags and holsters behind you hip bone. What can it hurt?

I shot Prod off and on over the last few years. I got into CZs last fall and that kind of revived my interest in that division.

I shoot a tac sport 9mm now. I'm just tired of the scoring of minor power factor.

Ah, got it. For some reason I assumed you were shooting a .40 in Limited.

I shot Limited for a number of years. But lately its become less appealing to me and I've mostly been shooting mostly SS and Production. It helps that a number of my friends are doing the same thing. I say go for it. Get a SP-01 or something and start going head to head with your buds.
