  1. I was going off what the 1st para of 21.6 says (above the Special Notes section) that says:

Any other component which are externally visible may ONLY be replaced with OFM parts which are offered on the specific model of gun or another approved gun from the same manufacturer, except as clarified below.

Like Bikerburgess pointed out, I interpreted "approved" to mean being on the Prod Approved list. Since the TS is not an approved Prod gun, it doesn't meet that first part of 21.6 (provided I am interp-ing that correctly). Prior to reading Troy's response to you I interpreted this to be the reason why the G34's extended mag release could be installed on another Glock and be Prod legal since you were taking a part from another approved gun.

  2. I mostly practice using a static MGM 10" plate/stand they sell for Steel Challenge. I use a short 2x4 to put it at about the height of a Mini Popper, then mix it up with some paper in the drills I do. No resetting needed, and you definitely know when you hit it. I also have a MGM autopopper for AR practice, but have used the AP for pistol practice.

I oversee my clubs supply of targets and props, and lately I've been contemplating setting up a box with a combination lock and leaving it at the range with a handful of target stands, sticks and one or two of the SC plate/stands in it for competition shooters to use for practice during the week. We could even add some shot up targets from the previous match that would otherwise just be tossed in the dumpster.

My club allows steel targets to be shot in select pistol bays, and we also have a couple of plate racks set up but those are semi-permanent and are not to be moved. I was thinking that if the folks we give the combo to are diligent about returning the equipment and not trashing it then why not offer this up as part of their membership. We'd still keep the bulk of the USPSA equipment locked up in the shed, but I was wondering if anybody else shoots at a club where they provide competition-type targets available for practice?

You guys think this is a good idea or would this end up being a reason why "we can't have nice things"?

  3. Bizarre!

If he maintains this position it will complicate issues and render many current production guns non-compliant (until the "offending" part is swapped out).

This is what I had expected:

... I had assumed the interpretation would come back as illegal because the donor gun was not on the production approved list, ...

It will be interesting to see how this develops.

I agree. My reading of 21.6 is with the rest of you guys in that the "only" part of the sentence was intended to disallow buttons or paddles, and that you could install a longer mag release, such as the Gen 3 G34 mag release on a G17, or the CZ Shadow mag release on on non-Shadow CZ based on the 1st para in 21.6.

Prior to reading Troy's response I would have said no to the TS' mag release since its not from a model of gun that is on the Prod approved list.

Now confused I be. Maybe its a good thing my Shadows still have their OFM mag release.

  4. I thought max weight for ESP and CDP is now 43 oz with an unloaded mag inserted.

But PatJone's comment about 9mm 1911's weighing more than their .45 brethren is spot on. Back when CDP was 41 oz, I had to use an aluminum MSH and magwell to get under that weight. Now that both divisions are 43 oz, its a little easier to make weight.

    Re your questions,

IDPA has a restriction on how big your extended mag catch can be. However, Dawson Precision makes an IDPA legal Posilock mag catch which I believe to be a great part.

Grips are a personal thing. Get what you like the looks of and go from there. The last pair of Larry Davidsons I bought I asked him to hog out the backs to make them lighter. I also asked for the thumb area on the left panel be relieved to help reach the mag catch.

For IDPA I like the Smith and Alexander magwell/MSH. You can get one in aluminum to save weight. I can't recall the exact difference in weight but I want to say it about 1.5 oz.

Personally I like fiber optic front sights, but know some that do not. .100" wide is my preference, but that also depends on how wide the rear sight's notch is.

As far as serrations on the front strap, I have grip tape on most of my 1911's. Cut them big enough so they extend underneath the grip panels and you hardly ever have to worry about it peeling off.

Springs depends on your load. I like an 18 lb mainspring and 10 lb recoil spring for most 9mm loads. Some like 11's, others like a little lighter. You kind of have to test them for yourself to see what you like/shoot well with.

  5. Yep. Actually it was my gunsmith that did that back in 2009 and its still in great shape despite all the rounds thru it. Most of my 1911/2011's get EGW internals at some point, but this particular gun's trigger pull with just stock parts has been good enough that I haven't seen the need to change it out.

After cerakoting I did run a stone down the trigger grooves in the frame and also stone polished the insides of the frame where the hammer and sear are. Polishing the trigger bow and the face of the disco that rides on the bow can also help. 1500 grit emery paper for that.

  6. Get the 9mm since it sounds like you're more into shooting matches where PF is not an issue. Then later, if you decide you want a major PF gun, get one in .40. Trying to find one-gun-to-do-it-all can lead you down all kinds of weird paths. Just embrace the suck and plan on getting multiple. I don't golf, but would you putt with a driver?

  7. 13 ln recoil

    18 lb main spring

Stock sear/hammer/disco, sear spring has been tweaked for a 2.25-ish lb trigger

    Ed Brown extended mag catch

I also replaced the STI BTGS with an Ed Brown since I didn't like the scallop relief cuts on the STI. I also had to replace the RHS ambi thumb safety a couple of times in the last 5 years but STI sent me replacements each time.

Added different grips, an arched MSH, and a Techwell SP magwell.

A couple of years ago I had it cerakoted since the original bluing was pretty much toast.

  8. I bought my first 2011 off a forum member in the classifieds. It gave me a good sense of what I was getting into, and what parts I wanted to change out (which I did in over the first 6 months after getting it). Two years later that experience led me down the path of spec'ing out a 6" custom build from a box of gun parts and a local 1911/2011 gun wrench.

Both of those two 2011's are chambered in .40 since at the time I was mostly shooting USPSA with a little 3-gun and IDPA thrown in there. The 5" 2011 with downloaded .40 worked for both of those games and I shot it that way for a season or two. Then I got it into my head that I wanted a 9mm 2011. So rather than buy/build a new 9mm 2011 I took the original 2011 and had a 9mm slide/barrel top end built for it by the same 2011 wrench in town. I still have the .40 top end and put it back on the frame whenever I am shooting a major match and need a backup for my 6". Otherwise, 90% of the shots fired thru that gun are with the 9mm top end on it.

Is the 9mm configuration better? For me it is when shooting minor. I think I just like the snappier feel of the 9mm vs .40minor. YMMV.

  9. I've been using the Corey mags for a while now with my .40 1911. I have not had any issues shooting the gun loaded to 8 or 9. No issues with the mags not ejecting, in fact zero issues at all with these mags and the hybrid follower that comes with the Corey mags.

The Corey mags are a little longer than a typical Tripp Cobra mag, and as a result they stick out of the gun a little further, but they do fit the SS box (the front half of the base pad is ground down by Tripp just enough so it fits). I'm using a Techwell XT magwell which is pretty deep so I appreciate the extra length. You would not have any issues with seating the mag if you're using a S&A.

I sometimes shoot L-10 for s&g's, so I bought some of the Flex followers to be able to use the same mag body and increase capacity to 10. I am not sure what the deal is, but the Flex follower will sometimes pop out the top of the mag which hangs it up when you go to slide lock and you have to manually strip the mag out. But if you don't go to slide lock, no problems. Re-install the hybrid follower and no problems, so I am pretty sure its the Flex follower. Some people I know that have the same setup have said theirs does this as well.

IMO, the hybrid follower is the way to go for reliability, and depending on the magwell you are using the extra length of the Corey mag may be beneficial to you.

  10. No reason that I can think of. Federals are thought to be the softest, thus you can use the ligher (8.5 lb) hammer springs that might otherwise give lite strikes on a harder brand of primer (i.e. CCI).

Personally I'm happy with a 11.5 lb hammer spring which allows me to use CCI or Win primers, of which I have quite a few.

  11. Accu-Shadow and Shadow-Targets are not legal for SSP. ACCU because of the slide was machined for the bushing by a non CZ-UB, and ditto for the Shadow-Target because a non CZ-UB machined the slide for the LPA adjustable rear sight.

However any of the CZ-75 Shadows (no rail) with sights using the stock dovetail is legal, as are any of the CZ-75 SP-01 Shadows with sights that use the stock dovetail.

  12. To put it in perspective idHawk left $10,000 on the table to help us Tanfoglio shooters out. That is pretty awesome.

That was penance for all his past crimes against humanity... They are too numerous to recount, but most are fairly egregious.

  13. I shot .40 minor for 3-gun for a little while using a Glock 35 and a 2011 Eagle. I'm going off memory, but IIRC 2.9 gr of Hodgdon Clays with a 180 gr moly bullet was a stupid soft load. Had to lower my recoil springs so the cases would eject reliably.

Eventually I ended up switching to a Glock 34 and had a 9mm top end built for my Eagle because I preferred a snappier recoil impulse.

Have you tried going to a 165 or 135 gr .40 bullet?
