  1. If anyone needs a place to crash, I have a room at the Holiday Inn in Bowling Green with an extra bed, if you want to split costs. I don't even snore much.
  2. I rarely comment on matches, but I have to say, this was a great match. The sponsor support was excellent. I picked up a nice scope off the prize table which was donated by Joe Bob Outdoors, and Joe Bob was standing right in the room, so I was able to go over and shake his hand and personally thank him for their support. I would have signed up on the spot for the 2014 match had registration been open.
  3. I won't clutter this sub-forum with monthly club match announcements each month, but I wanted to put this out here once, as I have no other method of reaching folks not already on my master e-mail list. Talon Range, located just west of Tallahassee, FL, has opened its doors and will be hosting its first match Saturday July 20th (we were supposed to have out first match July 6th, but 12 inches of rain in 5 days said otherwise). The July 20th match will be a steel match, with a mix of Steel Challenge stages and Scholastic Pistol Program stages (youth competitors are highly encouraged!). Our monthly match format will be USPSA on the first Saturday and steel on the third Saturday of each month. As soon as I get some breathing room, I'll add in a carbine-handgun / 2-gun match. The following is the match announcement. If you have questions, or would like me to add you to my master e-mail list, feel free to PM me. Thanks Cost: $15 for one gun / division. If you want to shoot a second gun, it will be an additional $5. You will need the following: A safe handgun chambered in .22lr or larger (semi auto or revolver). Minimum of 3 magazines (although 5 is better). If you plan on competing with a revolver, I strongly encourage you to bring speedloaders (or moon clips), as it is a lot more efficient at the loading table. A bag or case to transport your firearm between stages. Eye and ear protection (wrap around eye protection is highly recommended!). The match will require a minimum of 150 rounds--assuming you don't miss. A holster is not required. The sport has numerous divisions, and you can choose to shoot the match while drawing from a holster, or from 'low ready.' There are divisions for both iron sight guns as well as optical sighted (red dot) guns. We will also allow rimfire rifle (.22LR rimfire only) as a division. Where: Talon Range. We are located at the interchange of Interstate 10 and US 90 in Midway, FL at the 192 exit (technically the North East corner). We don't actually have a physical address yet, but the following directions should get you there. - From I-10, exit at 192 onto US 90 West. If you are coming from the West on I-10, you will make a left turn onto US 90 and proceed under the interstate to a stop light. If you are coming from the East on I-10, you will immediately come to a stoplight. To the West (left) you will see a Flying J truck stop (cheapest gas in the area, BTW), and to the East (right) will be a service road called Commerce Blvd that winds back towards the interstate. Turn onto Commerce Blvd. and drive .5 miles. Talon Range will be on your right hand side. For those of you with GPS, the coordinates are: N 30* 29.425' by W 84* 25.278'. If you go to Mapquest and type in '555 Commerce Blvd Midway, FL 32343, the map should show exactly where our range is located (Note the city is Midway FL, not Tallahassee). The road leading into our range is nicely maintained, so for all of you Ferrari owners out there, have no fear of making it down to the range. When: Saturday, July 20th. Stage set up begins at 7:30. Sign up starts at 8:30. Shooters meeting at 9:30, with start of match immediately following. If it looks like we will have heavy / dangerous weather, I will make the go / no-go call as early as possible. Instructions: Talon is a COLD RANGE. No bagging or un-bagging of firearms in the parking lot. Safe areas will be provided and clearly marked. Once you make it onto the range property, there will be signs designating parking and the registration / sign up area. For those who have already been shooting steel at Tallahassee Rifle and Pistol Club, we are going to keep sign up as similar as possible. One thing that will change, however; EVERYONE must fill out a Talon Range liability waiver. You can find the waiver here: http://www.talontraininggroup.com/Talon-Range/Talon-Range-Membership-AgreementIt's a little lengthy, but it's thorough, and you only have to do it once...ever (unless we revise it). I will have copies at registration, but I encourage you to print it off and complete it beforehand to speed up the registration process. For Talon Range members who have already completed the waiver and have it on file, you will not need to fill out another one (but it has to be THIS waiver, which was revised 06/17/2013). Eye and ear protection are mandatory for both competitors and spectators. Spectators are welcome. We will even have an air conditioned lounge with TV, X-box and cold drinks / snacks for purchase to get your 'spectator' out of the sun for a while. If you have never participated in a competitive shooting event of any kind and are interested, please don't hesitate to at least come out and watch! There is no reloading on the clock, and very little movement, so it's great for new competitors of all ages. The 'scholastic' in Scholastic Pistol Program means youth! One of the primary goals of the sport is to involve young shooters--they are the future of our sport! If you have a youngster who you think might be interested, please bring them out to at least watch (don't forget about eye and ear protection). I hope to see you on the range! John Rasmussen Director of Competitive Marksmanship, Talon Range
  4. Ya, sorry guys. I held off as long as I could, but the weather just wouldn't cooperate with us. We've had 7 inches of rain, with more coming tomorrow, so I'm going to have to scrub it. Hopefully the weather will work with us for the steel match later in July.
  5. Thanks, Guy! czambesi: PM me your e-mail address, and I'll put you on my master e-mail list for matches.
  6. Just wanted to let folks in the NW Florida, SE Alabama and SW Georgia are know about a new range opening up. My name is John Rasmussen, and I'm a long-time competitive shooter, and new range owner (well, one third range owner). Talon Range was created for the purpose of promoting the shooting sports, whether it be for recreation, self defense or competition. We currently have 15 bays, with more coming. We currently have, along with our pistol bays, a 200 yard rifle range. A separate 400 yard rifle range and sporting clays complex is nearly finished. We also have a pro-shop stocked with targets, ammo, eye and ear protection, a classroom, and a lounge. Here's a picture from a few months ago--we've come a ways since then! My goal is to host monthly USPSA and steel matches, as well as 3-gun, 2-gun, GSSF and whatever else there seems to be a desire for. USPSA will be held the first Saturday of the month and steel the third. Our first match will be a 6 stage USPSA match held on July 6th. Match entry fee will be $20. Our match will consist of 6 challenging courses of fire--five field courses plus one USPSA classifier stage. The classifier will be CM03-07 'Riverdale Standards.' Total round count will be 142 rounds, assuming you don't miss (trying to keep you within your 3-box ammo limit at Wal-Mart). Talon Range: We are located at the interchange of Interstate 10 and US 90 in Midway, FL at the 192 exit (technically the North East corner). 7. I'm about to build a bunch (50) portable walls for my club. They will be made with 2x2 frames and steel holders to keep them upright. I have been debating for a while now on what to use for the wall faces themselves. I want to use a mesh or netting material, but i don't want orange snow fencing. I have wore Google out looking at various different types of construction / game / snow fencing, but one thing that I keep coming back to is mosquito net--the fiberglass kind you'd put in your screened in patio. I recall seeing this a lot in older world shoot videos, and if I remember correctly USSA range in Tulsa used them extensively during the mud bowls. They looked good, and put on an angle, even provided a little bit of a vision obstruction. Has anyone else used mosquito netting for their wall faces? Can you think of any reasons to go with a plastic fence instead? Thanks
  8. I know I have seen this discussed before, but I can't find the thread I was looking for. I need to get the loading gate on my new M2 opened up, and I was wondering if you guys feel that sending it off to a gunsmith is money well spent, or do you just typically do it yourself. I'm not afraid to put a file to a brand new shotgun, but I also don't mind spending the money and letting a professional do it, if it's worth it. Thanks
  9. That's the kind of information I was looking for, thanks!
  10. I noticed at the Multi-Gun Nationals that there were a few stages with steel slug targets that I would have thought wouldn't be too healthy for the targets. There were a few full size pepper poppers and some (I believe) 18x24 steel challenge plates. They seemed to have held up just fine throughout the match, so maybe there isn't a problem with it. Are slugs as bad / worse / not as bad on steel targets as rifles are? I ask because I'd like to run 3-gun on my range, and I have AR500 poppers and steel challenge targets that would be great to use, but I don't want to do it if the slugs beat the targets to pieces. Thanks.
  11. I've been using Speer Lawman 1oz slugs for a while now, and I'm not super happy with the accuracy. Also, they are running at just over 1300fps and kinda beat me up shooting a bunch of rounds. I know that the answer to my question is 'shoot them and find out,' but before I drop a hundred + dollars on a big box of them, do ya'all think the Fiocchi low recoil slugs at 1150fps would feel that much different? Have you found them to be as accurate or more accurate than other brands you have tried out? Thanks
  12. I have the Mark Otto vest, and I really like it. I'm looking for anyone who has tried both the Otto vest and the TacCom system who can compare the two. Are the TacCom loaders more durable using spring steel clips instead of plastic? Is the belt you can buy with the TacCom system sturdy enough to wear like a vest? Thanks.
  13. What kind of snow fence is that--or, where did you get it from? Thanks
  14. Well, they had Gen 3s in stock and no Gen 4s in stock, so that helped with my decision. Thanks all.
  15. Have all the bugs been worked out of the Gen 4? Is there any reason to stick with a Gen 3? Thanks
  16. I think a UF vs. FSU SSCA match the same weekend as the FSU-UF football game would be awesome. It could be a travelling match held in whatever town the game is in that year.
  17. Multi-school SSC match? Sounds like a great time! We will have two separate rifle ranges--one 200 yard, and another 400 yard.
  18. Hey guys. I haven't mentioned anything on the forum yet because I wanted to wait until we were close to being done with the range, but this seems like a pretty good opportunity to let the cat out of the bag. I know Tallahassee is a bit of a drive from Eglin, but myself and two other friends are opening a range here. When it's done (two months--maybe three), it will have roughly 25 bays. Most of the bays will be individual lanes for member rental use, but there will be six or seven bays for nothing but competition use. I plan on hosting a 6-stage monthly USPSA match, steel challenge (and Scholastic Steel Challenge) matches monthly. Once I get my head above water running the range, I also plan on hosting IDPA, 'tactical' rimfire matches and a 3-gun match every few months. We will have two separate rifle ranges--one 200 yard and the other 400 yard and multiple trap / skeet / sporting clays ranges. Were going to be located at the intersection of US 90 and I-10 (exit 192), right on the interstate. It's called Talon Range. http://www.talontrai...com/Talon-Range I'll make it a worth wile drive over from Ft. Walton!
  19. So I have an MTAC, and I'm perfectly happy with it. Or at least I was until all you schmucks started talking about your 6 and 6.5x scopes. So now I have this burning, irrational desire to get a bigger scope. The furthest range I'll likely shoot to is 400 yards. Do I need a 6x? Is it enough of an improvement over a 4x that it justifies the cost? Thanks
  20. I have an MTAC mounted on my 3-gun rifle and have been using it for a while now. I tried endlessly to get the reticle aligned / straight up and down. Just when I think I've got it, I look through it and it looks crooked. What's the best method / tool for perfectly aligning the scope?
  21. Anyone want to split a room? I've got an extra bed, and I don't snore too much.
  22. Hey ClutchUSMC, I'll split a room with you if you still need a roommate.
