  1. Also remember your Daniel Defense barrel has a 5.56mm NATO chamber. Your other barrel may well be a .223 chamber that is tighter.

Using an EGW chamber guage is both .223 and 5.56, I noted that factory M193 rounds would drop in fine in the 5.56 guage, but not the .223 guage.

  2. My son's 11-87 Youth was purchased at Dick's Sporting Goods for $395 last Thanksgiving.

Also interesting to note that the mag tube is not dimpled, so no extra modifications to add an extension.

DMW EZ loaders also have to be made to fit by trimming the sides a little - that is the only extra work with the 11-87 Youth. Plus the stock can be lengthened using the included spacer kit as the kid grows...

  3. A standard 11-87 but pad bolts striaght on to the Versa Max and shortens LOP by at least a half inch. Made a big deifference for me...

    Mick

Is the length of pull shorter on the tactical model? It looks like it compared to the field model but I could just be seeing things.

  4. So, is the firing pin retainer exposed through the ejection port or captured by the receiver?

Can we get a pic of the other side?

    Mick

Does the gun have a 3" or 3.5 chamber?

    Barrel is marked 2 3/4 & 3".

My Competition Master runs great on Remington Nitro 27 loads. The pink Federal loads choke it to death. I put 50 rounds of the pink Federals through the Versa today and it was flawless.

  5. In my 650 setup, I use a Dillon carbide FL resizing die with the expander ball removed in station 1, then through a RT1200/trim die in station 3, then a lee neck expaning die in station 5 for a very slight bell.

I tried a RCBS neck sizer/decapper in station 1 but found much more consistent sizing and shoulder setting using the FL sizing die in station 1.

Exactly why I full length resize/decap/expander ball first, THEN run thru the dillon trim die, THEN don't do anything with the neck other than a slight bell for bullet seating. the dillon trim die (which is a full length size die as well) leaves the neck tension tight, which is what you want...

  6. TThe existing holes in the receiver are great for mounting a piece of picatinny rail, but not for a ghost ring rear sight, which needs extra holes....

    Mick

I'm looking at drilling and tapping two threads into an aluminium Versa Max receiver to mount a sight and was curious as to how the receiver would hold up. Any dangers in doing this with the sight mounting holes egging out from taking a pounding?

    Mick

As a new Versa Max owner, I'm curious why you would need to do that. It comes drilled and tapped in four places along the top of the receiver. At least my 26" synthetic model has that. Are you needing holes in other positions than those already provided?

BTW, I have NO expertise in this matter. But, I do know my Versa Max has those mounting holes all ready to go straight from the factory. So say my eyes and my owner's manual. I'm eager to learn about your situation.

  7. Don't waste your time or money on a new set of dies. The inconsistency is coming more than likely from the bullets you are using and not the dies...

Latest update, I cant get consistant oal range between 1.148-1.156. Shimmed toolhead, adjusted shell plate to almost no whigle, still have that inconsistancy. Im using barrys 147 gn rn bullet, and thinking to switch to dillon dies and see if seating stem is better fit for that bullet.

  8. So does JP's increased bearing area mean their lightweight carriers do not need a roller cam?

    Mick

    It is the width.

From the JP website: Machined from 416 stainless steel for optimum durability and longevity. Does NOT have forward assist serrations but does feature dust cover notch. 100% increase in bearing surface for smoother operation, improved alignment and lower wear in the upper receiver.

I've seen more than one completely trashed receiver that had been run with a lightened Mil-Spec bolt. There is a lot more to it than just weight reduction. Also, a lightened Mil-Spec bolt will wear the cam path much faster and a POF roller cam is almost a necessity.

  9. Another thing to consider is that if you need to load slugs or buck in with you birdshot, then a longer tube allows more flexibility especially if you have slightly longer shells. An 8rd tube with birdshot, may not hold 8 rds if you have slugs or buckshot thrown in. Been there and done that and learned the hard way....

  10. ELS forks will fit Blade tech holsters just fine. I've also adapted ELS forks to CR Speed mag pouches. Just but a T-nut and appropriate screw and star lock washer from Ace hardware.

    Mick

The ELS forks won't fit any of the holsters. The QLS is specifically designed for holsters. The ELS is only designed for equipment.

  11. Can each tilt feature be turned off individually or both must be on or off? I can see the use for the vertical off feature but for rifle matches, when tilting to use an offset optic or tilting the rifle to shoot under a low barricade I would definitely want the horizontal off feature disabled.

Now, when are Swarovski going to come out with a 1-8x version? Any rumours?

    Mick

So I got to looking at my optic when I took it out of the box this weekend. Unfortunately I found a imperfection in the glass that I could see in the reticle. It was not a scratch looked like a small pocket of something seated deep in the glass. I contacted Swarovski and they are sending a brand new one as soon as they get mine as they are paying for the shipping. The tilt sensor turns off the optic when you tilt it more than 30° left or right and automatically turns back on when you tilt it back up. Same if you raise or lower the scope more than 70° as if you were slinging a rifle or carrying it in the low ready and again cones back on when you level the scope. Now all of this can be turned off by holding both intensity adjustment buttons at the same time for five seconds. All in all, other than being as much as a used car, an amazing optic and I can't wait to get mine back.

  12. Interesting thing to note is that the 12.5lb ISMI spring seemed very snappy in recoil, so I switched to the 14lb spring. Even then, recoil felt sharper than with the Recoil Master.

I will have to use the Recoil Master with the same lot of ammo, but the pistol definitely felt more lively in the hands.

Ammo used was 165gr Montana Golds with 6.2 gr WSF that makes 170 PF.

maybe I need to go with a 16lb recoil spring or try 180 gr bullets at a lower velocity? Different powder?

For the guys using the 12lb recoil springs, what bullet weights, powder and PF are you running?

  13. To answer my own question, I got the factory STI FLGR from brownells and used the existing reverse plug. I had no issues with it. The STI FLGR dropped right in.

With the paper clip as a tool, takedown is easier than with the recoil master and the green takedown doohicky...

    Mick

  14. Maybe not headspace problems, but the bolt will be seeing a new barrel extension and this will change the wear pattern on the bolt locking lugs and perhaps give shorter bolt life...

    Mick

You can swap out bolts and/or carriers without worrying about headspace problems. AR's are not bolt guns. The barrel extension sets up your headspace. You're not going to get enough wear on the face of a bolt to make a difference.

  15. I'm replacing the Recoil Master that came with my .40 edge.

I'll be trying 12.5lb and 14lb ISMI recoil springs.

My intent was to use the existing reverse plug that came with the recoil master and use a one piece stainless EGW full length guide rod.

Will this combo work without any fitting issues, or should I buy the STI FLGR and a new reverse plug?
