Make sure your clamp is not too tight and pulling he barrel.
Remove the clamp and make sure the mag tube is a quarter to half turn out from fully tight.
Reassemble clamp and make sure that you use the same tension on both screws.
Recheck slug POI.
Repeat with clamp completely removed if you need to be sure.

So finally shot some slugs. Tried the Remington sluggers, full strength Remington's and Fiocchi 1oz. The Remington's shot roughly 10" right and 10" low. The Fiocchi shot low and left but only about 5-6". What do I do now. Is there any way to adjust something? Thanks

Ironic that Colts now come with M16 bolt carriers and hammers...
Mick
I'm pretty sure they have gone to small pin, not positive, but pretty sure. Can tell you the large is .176 and the small is .156 if that helps. Also that this variation was done to stop someone from putting M16 fire control parts into an AR receiver.
No, that was quite informative! I think Craig's List just got a couple hundred hits in the cell phone section. Everyone wants to be able to make a bit more $$$ to support their 3g habit!

Current production Colts all use small, mil-spec 0.155" hammer and trigger pins.
The Colt Competition will be small pin, the 6920 I can't be sure.
Not sure what year they went back to small pins, so best to measure on the 6920, or just pull a hammer pin and check against the other receiver.

I am using both AA2230 and H335 for 55gr FMJ loads and I like both.
In order to make a decision on just one powder, I was wondering which is the least temperature sensitive of the two?

Mesa Tactical will be coming out with a VersaMax specific PG stock very shortly. I would personally wait for that if you want a PG stock...
Mick
Do I have to disassemble the M4 stock via the buttplate to install it on Versa Max?
It twists off Benelli but does it also twist on the Remington?
A little more detail would be appreciated.

In 1999, I remember buying 5K packs of primers for $45 per 5K pack, shipping included.
Needless to say, I was using primers from that purchase till about 2009....

I use a Lee FCD to put a very light crimp on my 55gr FMJ loads. For the same loads, I tested FCD crimped, versus non crimped. I all cases, I got tighter groups using the FCD...

I was having this exact discussion this past Saturday.
There is a maker in Phoenix, AZ that will soon be making nuts, magazine tubes, end caps, clamps and extended bolt releases in red (and other colours if there is demand) besides basic black.
Red mag tube end caps are already available for the VersaMax Tactical.
As soon as the items are ready, I will post the results of the testing....
Mick
I would love some red accessories for my shotgun and my AR.

Which model? Tactical (22") or Field (26")? Did the gun function reliably beofre, or never has since you got it?
Check your firing pin retaining pin hasn't walked and is rubbing on the inside of the receiver, slowing down the bolt.

Looks like the harmonic vibration issue on the longer +2 caps has been solved. Manufacturer is just waiting on a new bit to arrive for the CNC machine. If all goes well, production versions of the lengthened +2 caps could be ready by end of next week.
Lester, looks like you're being taken care of.

You have the original +2. The longer version is 5.15 inches long. These are in process - I will follow up on where they are at.
The issue with lengthening the cap further causes harmonic vibrations on the CNC machine which the manufacturer should have resolved by now. Basically they won't ship unless the quality is there.
I would call the manufacturer and let him know that you're needing the longer +2 due to the shells that you are using. He should take care of you.
Out of curiosity, with the factory end cap on, can you get 8 shells in easy, or do you have the same problem?
Mick
Need help, please.
I have a slight problem with the +2. The fit on the tenth round is so tight with Remington Gun Club Target Load shotshells (2.35 inches) that the tension from the brass onto the feed latch is preventing the feed latch from disengaging when the feed latch release is pushed. The shotshell just stays in place and cannot move into position onto the carrier. I also tested Winchester AA shells and they are okay (2.29 inches).
The extension I have measures 4.5 inches. Is this the original length or the extended version? If this is the shorter, original +2, can I just call Galco to get the longer replacement?
Thanks,
Lester

Great! The cap looks like it matches the Briley choke tube finish.
I have the manufacturer looking at a dull mil-spec type anodizing to better match the tube finish.
Mick
Thanks for the tips on the strap wrench. I put some muscle into it and the cap came right off.
Here's a pic of a black +2 with a Briley extended choke.

Yes, there is a small gap between barrel rib and receiver on the VersaMax.
Yes, the Tactical uses a tube, mag clamp and charging handle made by Nordic. The tube for the Tactical is made to Remington's requirements. It has a recess to hold the clamp in a fixed position and the thread pattern at the nut is the same as on the other end, so the tube is reversible. It also means that the end caps are a different thread than regular Nordic tubes.
Mick
I thought the tactical used a Nordic tube. You would think they could supply the correct spring. I'm going to throw some shells in it and leave them for a while to see if that loosens it any.
Anyone hav eideas on if there should be a gap between top rib rail and receiver?
-
My pleasure! Did you get the extended Pro Bore chokes from CDNN to give it the matching silver look?
Mick
Got my + 2 from Mick and i installed already, it ran flawless and the gun looks so much better... Thanks Mick

Steel plate is interesting stuff. While doing the armour plating on the Australian Bushmaster troop carrier back in the mid 1990's, they would test the plate to make sure that that SS109/M855 would not penetrate. All looked good until someone shot the plate with 55gr M193 which punched holes clean through. Ooops!
What was happening was the SS109 steel tip was striking the plate and the projectile would disintegrate. The M193 on the other hand, would deform at the tip and the back end would keep moving with enough energy to punch a hole through the type of plate being used...

Grabagun has best prices I've found so far, ~$1050 plus $6 shipping.
The Tactical comes with the "breaching choke" as well as an Improved Cylinder internal choke.
The VersaMax takes Pro Bore chokes. They are available in extended versions for $10 from CDNN

The picatinny rail will not even be attached - it will be in the accessory bag.
You will lose nothing by using a 22" barrel. The Tactical holds 8 shells in the tube, which is prefect for USPSA matches which have that limitation. The tube is also about 1 inch short of holding 9 shells. There are now end caps out there that allow you to extend the tube to take 9 or even 10 shells.
The advantage of the Tactical is that it already comes with the extended tube, mag clamp, extended charging handle and extended bolt release.

I was able to take my end cap off by hand. It was on there fairly tight, though.
I suggest the following if you have problems;
1) Remove the barrel clamp.
2) Unscrew the tube from the barrel nut first. Note that the tube is not tight against the nut. It will probably be a quarter to half turn from being tight on the nut. This is important. You should put it back this way as it allows the tube to move when the clamp is being tightened, ie. the tube moves relative to the barrel and not the other way around. This will minimize or eliminate POI shift of slugs.
3) You can now get a firm grasp on the mag tube in one hand, while you now have plenty of room to wrap your thumb and index finger over the end cap to twist it off.
4) Reassemble. You can choose to put the new cap on, or put everything back together and put the new cap on last.

I used a strap wrench to get mine off, use two if that's what it takes!!!

Interesting. I never thought the spring in my Tactical was at all stiff. Easy to load 8 shells and almost jam in a ninth. Has Remington changed their springs?
Mick
The spring is absolutely too stiff, you can cut some coils. I don't think there is a gap, but I don't have mine in front of me either.

Tested a new Colt 9mm AR today. Zeroed the Aimpoint Micro in the Larue mount.
Took the sight off then confirmed zero with the supplied MBUS rear sight.
Put the sight back on. No loss of zero.
Not a scientific test, but no problems in this case...

M855 designated ammo has a steel core/penetrator, so no, it is not allowed at matches or ranges that prohibit use of this type of ammo.

I have been told that there is a bigger demand for the red end caps over the black ones. Seems we're a fashion conscious bunch or the red really does make one go faster.
So, for the fashionable shooters out there, what would you think of blue or even green caps?

Update: I received a prototype +2 that was lengthened by 0.625".
Using Estate 2.75" Heavy Game loads, with 10 shells in the tube, there is 1.3" of fee space.
With Winchester Reduced Recoil slugs, there is 0.5" of free space when 10 slugs are in the tube.
The above are using the standard spring that comes with the Tactical. When using a longer Nordic spring set up for a 10rd tube, the free space when using slugs is gone. The 10th shell is easy to get in, but there is about 0.1" or so of free space left.

Do not buy Remington Versa Max Tactical.....

The key problem here seems to be the cardboard cap that should be on the end of the box, securing the barrel and mag tube, holding the gun in place. With that not in place, the gun will move around and the accessories will roll all over the place.
Either it was packed that way from the factory, or the distributor opened it up for some reason and put it back like that.
Regardless, it should not be packed that way.
