  1. be sure to send your carrier off to C-rums to get it welded up. I should have my tactical in hand on Wednesday to supplement my 26" model.

Plans are to take it out to 9+1 capacity...

    Mick

I finally picked up a versamax tactical today. Thanks again for all the advice. It's very much appreciated.

  2. And to add to the mix, a PSI Ghost ring rear sight (AKA Benelli M4 rear sight) will fit the Versa Max. The elevation screw is the exact thread pitch for the rear most hole on the Versa max receiver. You still need to drill/tap the front and rear mounting screw holes.

In my case, said modification was done performed at Stealthyblagga's house!

A Williams front sight is a perfect match height wise for the front sight. I'm having some steel front sights built hopefully this weekened for a rock solid attachment of the front fibre optic.

  3. From my discussions with JP, that is not enough clearance. We'll see how much mine has when it comes back on Monday...

    Mick

I have the Syrac gas block with a Seekins Precision MCSR rail and there's enough clearance between the top of the gas block and the rail. Luckily, the top of the gas block goes slightly into the top slit that supports the top picatinny rail. I can easily put a piece of masking tape between the gas block and rail. Gas block works great.

  4. JP fixed everything on my upper at no charge and it is currently being shipped back to me.

JP have been having issues with clearance themselves and are lowering the height of the gas block - modifying existing ones and making lower ones in new production runs.

I'll update on what the work looks like and the amount of clearance.

Clint, I suggest you talk with JP if your upper is from them, or give Jason Adams a call and see if you can't get a lower profile unit substituted...

  5. Seems to me it's a tolerance stacking issue. The Syrac gas block is on that hairy edge for SOME handguards, even of the same manufacture.

In talking with JP, they said they were finding fitting of some the Syrac blocks could be "tricky" to get them right. In terms of clearance, about an eighth of an inch (?) at least would be needed. I guess my upper and all the measurements I took could have been the tipping point.

Having said that, I will let JP ultimately have the last word on this, but I have no doubt that the end result will be better for all of us...

  6. With dealer prices it's about $140 to $150 or for all of the Nordic goodies to upgrade the 26" versa max.

Or just get the VM Tactical from grabagun for about $1,040 shipped... B)

    Mick

You can get a Versa Max from grabagun for just under $1,000 shipped....

    Mick

But, you will be adding over $300 worth of parts (if purchased) to get it to where the Tactical is, which is pretty close for the the 3Gun game.

  7. In an earlier post I described the issues I was having in fitting a Syrac adjustable gas block onto my JP-15. The top of the gas block was touching the interior of the hand guard.

After talking with Jason Adams from Syrac and JP, I sent the upper in to JP last week to have a look.

After speaking with JP this morning, it seems that thay have decided that the Syrac gas block needs to be lowered in height to improve fitment.

Existing gas blocks will be milled lower and refinished. New gas blocks will be modified to have the lower height from the get go...

  8. You're sure it's not an 18" barrel with rifle length gas system? or maybe it's a 16" with mid length gas system?

Either way, you are fine with the standard carbine receiver extension and standard 3oz carbine buffer. That's how my complete JP15 came set up.

  9. Tell that to the guy that could have won the 2012 SMM3G had he not been DQ'd by his rifle falling out of the abandonment barrel on the last day of the match!

    Mick

I see shooters practically throw their guns in the abandonment barrels. It's kind of amazing to see them try to pick up that 1 second of stage time - that it would take to get the gun in the barrel without actually throwing it.

My thoughts are that 1 second (or even 2!) is worth it to not break something, to not have it bounce out and DQ, to not knock the zero off enough to cost an extra 10 rounds (10-15 seconds) on the long range stage, to not have the gun hit the bottom hard enough to knock the safety off and DQ, to not break something that is going to take 40 hours at work to earn enough money to replace what broke (after taxes).

Unless they have a handler that just gives them a new one.

  10. Sounds a lot like the upper I built for my son, except it has the 12.5" rifle Samson Evolution HG.

It currently has a pinned Daniel Defense low profile gas block, but I have been thinking of putting on a Syrac adjustable gas block...

    Mick

Just unscrew one, put on another. What other stuff are you talking about?

I can't leave well enough alone. I am putting together a 16" middy upper with a pencil barrel, Syrac Ordnance adjustable gas block, Samson evolution 15" handguard I had custom anodized green. There are a few local maches that only shoot 100 yards as well as the Pro Series so I'm gonna mess around with shorter and lighter.

  11. Update with a couple of observations...

After doing a little research, and comparing product pictures, I noted that the gas block I received has no markings or lot number whatsoever. It is completely blank.

The screw heads on the gas block I received enter from the left side, versus pictures I have seen on other web sites (including JP's) where the screws enter from the opposite side.

While the gas block from Midway came in packaging from Syrac, I am wondering if I have perhaps received an early model gas block?

Anybody else's Syrac gas block look like mine where the screws enter from the left?

    Mick

  12. Is the Syrac clamp on adjustable gas block supposed to fit under a JP hand guard?

I received the clamp on style, and while the bottom clears fine, it looks like there is barely any clearance at the top of the gas block and the JP hand guard.

Has anybody used the Syrac gas block/JP hand guard combo?

If so, did you do anything to make it fit such as remove a small amount of metal from the top of the gas block?

    Mick

  13. Getting away from the original question.

An M-16 bolt carrier is perfectly legal in a semi-auto AR-15 type rifle.

I have used SP1 carriers, Colt half circle carriers (both unshrouded firing pin and shrouded "LE" models), M16 carriers, Young "NM" carriers. I could not tell the difference in recoil between any of them....

  14. Kalani,

how does this scope compare to your Swaro?

I'm looking to complement the Swaro I already have with this or maybe the new leupold 1-6 on my other rifle...
