  1. Couldn't find the pics of the modifications, Bruce.

Looks like you're running the Tactical on your cover photo. What are your thoughts on the stock mag spring in the Tactical? Does it need to be replaced with a longer Nordic?

I'm also very interested in the shell catch mod. Can this be done in place, or should it be removed?

    Mick

I have several pictures of all of these modifications on my Facebook Page. BrucePiatt

I think mine was one of the first done by C-Rums. CAUTION: this is not a Bennelli and some of the materials are not the same. Some metals don't bend... they just snap. I know this first hand. Welding the lifter helps with the thumb bite but I needed to put a little channel on the inside where the shell is raised. I've shared the photos with Jeff at C-Rums so I think he's modified his process since then.

Be careful cutting coils off the mag spring or any other spring. I haven't touched my springs and all runs well. The shell catch has a sharp edge to it so hitting that "just a little" with a sanding wheel helps the feel dramatically.

Another note of caution.. there is no need to lighten the bolt on a Versamax, in fact this will cause more problems. The bolt velocity on a Versamax is way higher than any B - gun.

  2. Not needed on an 870, 1100 or 11-87.

The 1100 and 11-87 need an EZ- loader for fast loading. Different problem there...

    Mick

Hmmm...my 870 doesn't have anything that looks fork-like...I'm going to assume that means I don't need this modification?

  3. No, you do not need to spend $2.5K. If you shop wisely, you can buld them for much less than that, including the top tier components. However, it sounds like what you currently have is more than adequate. Now, if you simply want to build one for another division, have at it!

  4. When you screw the tube into the nut, do not crank down on the tube to lock it into the nut. Find where the tube stops, then back it out a quarter to half turn so the tube floats. The clamp will then orient the tube with respect to the barrel instead of the other way around.

Also be sure to add some non slip material like electrical tape to the inside of the clamp or outside of the tube to stop the clamp or tube from moving under recoil.

    Mick

The tube clamp can push up on the barrel and therefore change the poi at distance.

  5. $1,050 from grabagun.com plus $6 for shipping...

    Mick

I know it wasn't one of the options listed but I recently purchased a Remington Versamax Tactical (as recomended by some of the gents here) and I've been very happy. It comes set up out of the box and it feeds everything. The recoil is almost nonexistant and full power slugs feel like shooting an AR-15 with a good brake on it. I really don't have anything bad to say about it. It'll need the reciever opened up and some other minor work (sending it to benny hill when I can get the $ together) but I shot it at a match last weekend after only having shot it once before and I was more than happy/impressed. I'd give it a serious look. Plus you can find it for around 1100-1200 and it's already to go out of the box.

  6. Ordinairily, yes. But on the VM Tactical, you have to buy a new tube and end cap due to the different OD of the factory mag tube. Making a specific end cap for this model would be a cleaner way of doing it - one less part to buy. That, and the +1 version is for those OCD types that just have to have their mag tubes and barrel of a similar length... :)

The 10rd tube sticks out 3.25" past the end of the stock 22" barrel and and 2.5" past the same barrel with an extended choke tube.

    Mick

Why not put a 10rd tube on it, you will need it anyeay.

  7. A +2 should also be possible - I will ask, but don't see why not.

I should have the prototype in a few days. Once I'm happy with it, then I will post pics.

These are being custom made as a favour to me, so there is design time, material, machine time, anodizing, etc. to be done on machines that could be turning out something else. I hope nobody is thinking these will be free - I should have said that up front.

With that said, these will be $25-30 each, which I think is very reasonable for a custom part and is half the cost of buying the tube and end cap separately

When everything is finalized, I will put everybody in contact with the machine shop making the parts so they can deal with the owner directly. I am making nothing on this. I see a need for a part like this and since I'm going to the trouble of having it made, I figured why not help out my fellow shooters.

    Mick

I'd take one. And if you could make a one that holds +2 I'd be interested in that too

  8. Exactly. In many stages, you need to run to some shooting position to begin to engage targets. If moving and not actually shotting, then you might as well stuff in extra shells after the start timer goes off.

    Mick

You can only have 9 in the gun to start, but you can have as many shells in the gun as you want after the beep.

  9. After buying a new Versa Max Tactical, I discovered that the mag tube was about 1/4" shy of taking a 9th shell. I tried putting on a Nordic 1.5" XXL end cap and found out that it would not fit. The OD of the VM tube is about 0.030" bigger than the regular Nordic tubes.

One solution is to buy a new +5 Nordic tube ($35) and end cap($20).

However, in my opinion, a smarter solution would be to make a new end cap that would fit the factory extension. After adding an extended choke ($9.99 from CDNN), I measured that you could use a 2" extended end cap and be about 1/8" to 1/4" past the end of the choke tube - this would provide a little protection to the muzzle during barrel dumps as well as give more room to accomodate shells of different lengths.

I will be having a machinist friend of mine make one up. The design is already drawn up for the CNC machine.

Since he is already making one, it is easy enough to make more. Is anyone else with a VM Tactical interested in a custom 2" extended end cap? If so, let me know. Price will be $25-30.

    Mick

  10. The new Versa Max Tactical ran 100% at today's 3 gun match. It pointed well and transitioned very fast, particularly between obstacles.

For those looking for extended pro Bore chokes, CDNN has them for $9.99. I bought both an IC and LM.

In my opinion, there needs to be a new end cap to easily take this out to 9rd capacity without having to buy a new tube and end cap. With an extended choke, a new 2" end cap will be 1/8" to 1/4" past the end of the choke tube - good enough to provide a little stand off protection to the muzzle when doing barrel dumps.

I hope to have a prototype made up this week. Anyone else interested in something like this?

    Mick

  11. There is no such thing as a "matching bolt" an an AR-15. All they are doing is checking headspace with a bolt pulled out of a bucket.

Since headspace is pre set on the barrel, 99.99% of the time any new bolt mated to a new barrel will be perfectly fine...

    Mick

  12. That is for carbine buffer tubes. Commercial tubes have a larger OD and are usually made from extruded aluminium tube, whereas mil-spec tubes are smaller OD and are typically made of forged aluminium. That said, always buy from known, reputable sources. Parts isn't parts...

    Mick

I swear I read that somewhere, that one tube is made of a better or stronger metal, so either the I.D. Or the O.D. Is different?

  13. I will say this about the Swaro Z6i glass. At 6x, the optical clarity was MUCH clearer than a Leupold Mk4 M/RT at 9x...

    Mick

Exactly. I can put a 1-6, 1-8, or 1-10 on my rifle. Casanova will still show up and beat me with a 1x prismatic.

If the question was... Does the Z6i obsolete 1-4x scopes? My answer is yes. I haven't seen any other 1-6x scope yet to make me drop my Meopta. The Swaro is the only one which gives you all of the benefits of a 6x without sacrificing something more important. I am also of the not so humble oppinion that the Z6i would sell well, even if it was called the Z4i. It's not just the 6x which sets the Swaro apart, it's the entire package. Best in class FOV, best in class eye box, best in class reticle, daylight bright dot, best in class glass, best in class 1x, efficient electronics, decent turrets, rugged yet light weight, oh.... and it also happens to be 6x. What's not to love!? If I had $2200 I'd already own one. I haven't seen any others with even close to this combination of features. All others compromise something important to gain something I don't need. It does offer up options though. If your eyes are bad and 4x just doesn't get it done (and 6x) does, then that particular feature becomes more important to you. Cool beans! Snatch one up. If you have a 308 and live in an area were you might, on occasion, stretch out to 800yds, then 6x is certainly beneficial. If you've got varmints and need to be able to take down predatory pests at 400+ yds, then 6x might be of greater value to you. The Bushnell is cool, but doesn't get it done for me. I'll wait and see what the new Vortex looks like, but I doubt I will bother to put one on my 223. Maybe my 308, but not my 223. No point.

  14. There should be zero play on an A1/A2 stock. Check the spacer on the end of the buffer tube and check you have the right length screw. Might be too long or too short. make sure to put blue loctite on the screw...

Also use a big flat head screw driver with a big handle you can crank down on to tighten that screw down properly.

    Mick

  15. The Tactical just feels "stubbier" and points a little differently. Seems to move from point to point faster. I will get a much better answer to your question after this weekend's 3-gun match.

    Mick

    Nice summary. Thank you.

How do you find the weight and balance to compare between the Tactical and 26" field model?

  16. I will have both the 26" and the new tactical out with me on Saturday.

I also hope to have a new prototype front sight for the 26" to go with the ghost ring rear sight...

    Mick

Are you bringing both out this Saturday for demos?

  17. Just took a new Versa Max Tactical home and thought I would compare it to my 26" Field model. Here are the differences;

Tactical comes in a plain cardboard box. Field model comes in a nice hard plastic fitted case.

Tactical comes with an IC internal choke and an extended "breaching", meat plug remover tactical choke. Field model comes with 5 internal chokes - IC, LM, M, IM, F.

Tactical comes with all black furniture and a high comb cheek riser. Field model comes with balck/grey furniture and no cheek riser.

Tactical comes with extended charging handle and large button bolt release. Field model comes with neither.

Tactical has new firing pin retainer fix. This is a slot cut into the bolt for the o-ring to expand into. I had to modify my Field model to this configuration. This thing isn't going anywhere!

Tactical comes with nordic red aluminium shell follower. Field model comes with orange plastic follower.

tactical has a black mag tube with no dimples. Field model has silver tube with dimples.

Tactical has the "devil's fork" shell lifter. Same as the Field model.

Tactical has Nordic extended mag tube. This is different from the regular Nordic tube. There is a notch in the tube to stop the mag clamp from sliding around. Very nice touch!

Thread pattern on the Nordic tube is different from Nordic's regular pattern. This means thread pattern in the nut is also different and extended mag caps will not fit.

Tactical mag tube almost holds 9 shells.

Overall, I think this is almost perfect for 3 gun. I think Remington needs to also throw in an extended IC or LM choke tube. The Tactical extended choke I can do without.

Nordic also needs to make a 1.5" extended end cap for the Tactical to take it out to 9rd capacity!

    Mick

  18. The Tactical can almost hold 9 shells as is. A 1.5" extension should make the tube hold 9 easily. Alas, the Tactical extended tube has a different thread pattern!

Nordic needs to make a 1.5" end cap to fit the Tactical. Add an extended choke and you are good to go for 9+1!
