I wonder if Dawson plans on making the adjustable rear sights again for the M&Ps?

I asked that of Dawson rep a few months ago, he said they are after the boss to do that, as many customers are asking for it, but he has other projects he is working on.

  2. As far as the front Dawson sights, file/stone till you can slide it without force half way on, then use drift punch, either the included aluminum one or a heftier brass punch to set silght in middle of slide dovetail. I ground a flat bottom to my brass punch, so more surface area meets the side of sight.

The rear sight is trickier. Fitting is no problem but adjusting is a bit tedious. Easy to move more than is wanted with a hammer and punch. No big deal, as long as you know where you want sight to end up in dovetail. I use a micrometer to measure distance from side of slide to side of sight, in a horizontal plane, using the depth gauge bar sticking out of bottom of micrometer, if all that makes sense. Brownell's has a formula for sight adjustment as I think does Dawson as well.

Have a MGW sight pusher made for Glocks, does not work well for M&P in my limited trials. Not really needed for the 2 M&Ps I have replaced sights on.

  3. Accuracy has to do with repeatable barrel position as well as correct barrel twist rate. Wonder if S&W took a page from Apex and modified external barrel dimensions for better accuracy.

Have you shot it yet? .060 seems stupid small.......I had an Adam's Arms mid length barrel with a port that small and I could not get factory Fiocchi 55 grain loads to cycle the action. I opened it up to .084 and it works fine now.

Believe the port size is .068, if that matters.

  5. I would remove the fire control group by removing the 2 pins and pulling the trigger guard out. Dry fire the group at least 10 times, which should result in a heavy pull at least once, based on your post. Hopefully you can see what, if anything is causing your problem. Its no big deal to further disassemble the mechanism for cleaning, inspection and lubing.

I'm running the same barrel and my AR is overgassed. I was thinking adjustable gas block also and had a couple questions. How often do you adjust the gas block? I would think that once it is set where you want it, you wouldn't move it? Is it just moved for changing loads or adding a suppressor?

Once I adjusted the gas block to the weakest ammo I plan to run (PMC 223) I just left it alone. Even if it freezes up, do not see a problem as I do not plan on running a suppressor. If I did run a suppressor, then a switchblock might make more sense, as its a 2 position device, easier to change settings than with a gas block.

  7. Shot my 9Pro in a 3gun match since installing it.

Outstanding performance- much better accuracy, 0 malfunctions, increased confidence and speed.

Before the match I benched the gun at 25 yards both for sighting in and accuracy assessment. Groups around 2-3 inches, no fliers. This is a major improvement over the OEM barrel. Do need a shorter Dawson front sight to get elevation spot on, but that is not a reflection on the barrel. Prior matches left me frustrated with misses that I thought were well aimed. Now there is consistency and predictability in where the bullets are going.

Install was uneventful, only needed to work on breech end and pad under chamber. Thought I had left too much material on bottom pad, as slide would only lock up when released from full lock back, not if released slowly. However it seems to be wearing in just fine, never an issue when live firing. Amount of force required for final lockup when release slowly is diminishing, now only a couple of pounds.

Did have some issues, as did others, with first versions of this barrel, but am very happy with current version. Money well spent. Thanks Randy!

  8. Sorry i forgot to mention the shims. I tried a few of them until I found the one that worked best. It helped some, but my point of impact is still way above my point of aim. Ill watch some of these videos and see what knowledge i can gain. Thank you

Do a search on this forum for replacement front sights/beads for the JM 930. Think they are all set up that way in stock form. Inducing stock drop with the shims helps some, but does not solve the problem.

Mine also shot high, especially with slugs, about a foot at 25 yards. Solved it with replacement HiViz front triangle type sight.

  9. Spoke with a Dawson employee yesterday. They discontinued their adjustable for the M&P as David is working on an improved version, but keeps being distracted by other projects, so we need to contact the company, expressing a need/interest, to motivate him to complete the design and manufacture.

I have a set on my 5" Pro. I wonder what their ideas are? The old ones are pretty damn good.

Tech would not discuss details, just the reason why they stopped making them. Would think new ones would be an improvement of some sort. Perhaps shorter front sight?

Front sight seemed very tall compared to a front sight from a non adjustable set in photos, not sure if that is true in real life.

  10. Nice. I also fashioned a trigger overtravel limiter by cutting 2 small pieces of 1/16" Allen wrench stock, cut to length so do not stick out beyond slot in right side of sear housing. They were epoxied in place, perpendicular to sear housing, inside rear slot in sear housing. Trigger bar end contacts them to limit rearward travel. Same idea, extra metal is stationary rather than attached to trigger bar. No access to welder. Works great; just enough overtravel for reliability, super short reset.

  12. So shot the newly installed barrel at 25 yards. 100% reliability, accuracy varied, probably due to my lack of consistent hold/sight alignment. I had a few groups where 3 shots clustered into an inch, other 2 shots a couple of inches away.

Cannot fault the barrel, as accuracy is a major improvement over the OEM barrel. Checked the fit after around 50 rounds and it locks up exactly the same as prior to firing, including hood length fit in slide. May loosen a bit over time, but glad I used stones for final fit, as a file leaves ridges of metal that can deform, reducing OAL. Did notice that POI has gone down around 3 inches, time for a shorter Dawson FO front sight, not totally unexpected. Wish there was a nice adjustable rear I could throw on...

  13. Just got done fitting my SDI barrel. Front end did not require any material removal, nor did the hood as far as width. Did have to remove a few thousands to shorten hood enough to get a somewhat tight fit. Once the barrel locked into the slide, with some force, yet felt some binding, went with stones till it fit with a slight push. The pad required a bit of work, it took more than a few pounds of pressure on the back of slide to obtain lockup. A couple of passes with a file and some polishing with stones, and it locks up with the 2 to 3 lbs as recommended in the video. Next is live fire, tomorrow.

Props to Randy and the folks at Apex for quickly making small changes to the design/dimensions. Had issues with previous SDI barrels I attempted to fit to this frame & slide, and this one is the closest to a semi drop in. Expect it to be as good as has been the norm, especially since it has the latest feed ramp and breech configuration. If/when I miss, at least I will know it was sight alignment or poor trigger control on my part...

  14. Now the trigger breaks much further fwd.

Have thought of doing this, but am concerned the striker block would not be sufficiently raised to prevent it from interfering with the striker.

Did you do any mods to prevent this issue or were no mods needed? Have you checked the striker for marks/deformation due to striker block not rising enough?

    Thanks,
    Mark
