  1. The 2014 Briley WCSC is now completely sold out. Mike Dalton & I thank the 340 entries and the 83 sponsoring companies who have generously provided us with a prize table in excess of $115,000. Everyone involved with the event has worked long & hard throughout the entire year to insure the quality of the Briley WCSC continues to exceed what everyone has come to expect from us. We look forward to hosting what will be the biggest & best edition of the match to date and having an event with a safe, fun, family oriented atmosphere, where everyone goes home with a smile, full stomach, great memories and some nice souvenirs. To all those who are coming, please travel safely and we'll see you on the range. Jim
  2. Mike Calloway and his crew work extremely hard to put on a very efficiently & well run event. The target placements are dead on, range staff is friendly & helpful, lunch is good and the prize table is excellent. The US Steel Nationals has the classiest awards presentation I have ever seen, with all of the top finishers recognized and awarded their plaques in a podium ceremony. I'll be there, again. Jim
  3. Please mark June 21 & 22 on your calendars for the 2014 Briley West Coast Steel Championships at the ISI West Coast Steel ranges in Wes Thompson's, just outside of Piru, CA. We just returned from the SHOT Show, where we received an incredible response from the industry. They really like what we are doing and are showing it with their support. Nearly all of our existing sponsors have returned and many new companies have jumped on board to become involved with our event. We will certainly exceed the 2013 prize table of $96,000 and 32 firearms. Listed below are some preliminary match details. The 2014 Briley WCSC website: www.westcoaststeelchamps.com is now live. You can view the preliminary list of our over 75 sponsoring companies and the 2013 Virtual Prize Table, as well as download the entry form. As commitments begin to finalize, we will be updating the sponsor list and begin posting the 2014 VPT. From all indications, the 2014 Briley WCSC will be the biggest, best, richest & most fun yet and one you won't want to miss. OK, who's in? Jim Seven ALL NEW, West Coast Steel, 5 plate stages (best 4 out of 5 runs); traditional steel shooting rules apply Centerfire handgun and Rimfire handgun & rifle divisions Merchandise prizes distributed to ALL competitors with order determined by random drawing. 4. It is shock and sorrow that I felt when I stumbled across this post yesterday. I just didn't know how to respond. It is ironic that I am here in Piru this week, the very place that I first met Jamie & Linda. The Steel Challenge didn't go into full swing until you guys pulled into the practice range after driving non-stop from TX. It was always a joy to see your smiling faces and catch up on each other's lives. Those memories will always be fresh in my mind and in my heart. Today on the range, I looked to the hills and up to the sky and felt both the joy of her presence and the sadness of her passing. Jamie, my brother, we all share in your loss and your sorrow and for the blessing of having Linda come into our lives. Jim
  5. Eric- Congratulations on meeting all of your personal Steel Challenge goals! Your story brought up memories of the first time I shot the match. I look forward to meeting you at next year's event. As I don't know what you look like, don't be shy and please come up and introduce yourself. Jim
  6. Nolan- I'm glad you & Mei had a good time and that you both shot well. Many thanks to you and everyone who supported the 2013 Briley WCSC. Please mark June 21 & 22, 2014 on your calendars for next year's Briley WCSC. Virtually all of our sponsors have ALREADY committed to returning (including Mixon Targets/Tacos Don Chente!!) and in some cases, even INCREASING their already generous support. Please take the time to thank them and let them know that you support those who support the shooting sports. If we all do our part, Mike Dalton and I just might have to get some more and bigger tables for next year... Jim
  7. Limited Division results: Ken Kupsch 107.95 Scott Druyun 113.22 Carlos Anguiano 116.85 (I believe this is the correct spelling) Ha! Talked to soon soon! What's the deal with limited 3 gun? That confused me... Guess I'm a looser after all "limited, 3 gun" means that this was Ken's Limited score and that he is also entered in the 3 gun (Open, Limited & Rimfire pistol) Caspian Arms "Steel Master" division, which he also won. You're NOT a loser, Ken & Scott shot very well last weekend. Perhaps 2014 will be YOUR year...
  8. Limited Division results: Ken Kupsch 107.95 Scott Druyun 113.22 Carlos Anguiano 116.85 (I believe this is the correct spelling)
  9. Gentlemen- Thank you all for your enthusiasm and passion for the Briley WCSC. Your comments and opinions on the match show that you truly care about it. Please allow me address a few of them. $500 is awarded to the high overall winner immediately at the conclusion of the event because it is the specific purpose & desire of Mike Thompson, the person who is putting up the money. Any event's method of prize distribution will forever be a point of debate and contention. Ask 10 people their opinion and you will receive 20 answers. The beauty of our sport is that there are numerous matches with many and different ways of doing things. If the method of distribution is clearly stated on the entry form, it is up to the shooter to decide if they choose to accept the terms of conditions and attend the event. The Briley WCSC has always been very explicit on how things are run, although maybe we should also tell everyone to bring their horseshoes, four leaf clovers and rabbit's feet. Likewise, as stated on the entry form, plaques will be awarded to category/division (1st place) WINNERS. While the history and legacy of the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships obviously have an influence and comparisons are inevitable, the Briley West Coast Steel Championships is its own independent event and run as such. Warptime- Thank you so much for taking time off work, travelling great distances to attend the event and for being a "good citizen" by thanking our sponsors. Positive feedback on their support will certainly go a long way to receiving more of the same in the future. carlosa- You are certainly welcome back in 2014, but I would HIGHLY suggest that you send in your entry early, rather than deciding to just show up and enter on the last day. Due to the popularity of the Briley WCSC, we may be forced not to accept any walk on, last minute entrants. jkrispies- Thanks for your kind words and practice hard for next year; you know April will be doing so... pmd- It wasn't the same without you. Hopefully, all of the 3 Musketeers (& Dartanian) (or 3 Stooges (& Shemp)) will be able to attend next year. An ugly 111.44 wasn't too bad for an old man who was trying to shoot through as quickly as possible and at the same time, run around trying to keep everyone happy & things going smoothly. Thank you all again for your support of the Briley WCSC. Congratulations to everyone on some fine shooting and contributing to a safe, fun, friendly, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. You are the reason why the Briley WCSC is a passion for Mike Dalton and I. We look forward to seeing you again at the 2014 Briley WCSC. Jim
  10. THE SCORES HAVE NOW BEEN POSTED: http://www.isishootists.com/june-2013-wcsc.html Many thanks to Gary Bernsdorf, our webmaster & head stats guy for battling through Kidney stone trauma to get this done. I hope all of you enjoyed the event and we look forward to seeing you at the 2014 Briley WCSC. Jim
  11. You have my apologies for the radio silence over the last few days. I have travelled home and am trying to recover from the efforts of putting on the match while dealing with post match issues, as well as thanking and following up with our 75 sponsors. As prizes are given out by random drawing, the only scores and relevant placement that we calculate at the match are those of the potential overall winner, so he can be recognized and Mike Thompson can award the winner's check. We know that competitors want to get on the road ASAP, so we try not to delay the prize table any further than necessary. After the match, results are tabulated and rigorously checked for accuracy before we order personalized plaques for the category/division winners. We were hoping to have the results posted within a few days after the event, but (I just found out that) our webmaster/head of stats was struck and is currently dealing with the effects of a kidney stone attack (Have you ever experienced passing one?) I agree that it would be nice to have all the results posted in a more timely fashion, but sometimes things beyond our control do happen. We ask for your understanding while we sort everything out. Please rest assured that Mike Dalton's staff is working on getting them posted as soon as they are able. Focusing on the event itself, we hosted over 300 entries in a safe, friendly, fun and family oriented atmosphere. We had numerous entire and partial families, junior, ladies and first time shooters competing. The Archangel/Promag/Tactical Solutions Nomad Speed Shoot enlisted over 70 new members and raised several thousand dollars for the California Rifle & Pistol Association (the legislative affiliate for the NRA in CA). Mixon's Targets and Tacos Don Chente generously provided everyone with some absolutely stellar food. And did I mention that we gave away over $95,000 in prizes (including 32 firearms) in a manner that shooters of all skill levels would have an equal chance to get what they wanted? Everyone went home with a smile on their face, memories of a great weekend and chances are, a pretty nice prize. Is the Briley WCSC a raffle first and a shooting match second? Why don't you ask KC, Max or any others who practiced their butts off and traveled from eleven different states and two foreign countries to shoot and compete to the best of their abilities with the desire of winning the overall title or a plaque for their respective division/category? The answer could be seen from the joy on their faces if they shot well and the disappointment if they didn't. Mike and I do all we can to make the Briley WCSC a safe, positive and enjoyable experience for our competitors and sponsors and will strive to improve our operations in the future. We would like to thank all of the sponsors (especially those that attended), competitors, match staff and spectators for their support of the event. We are already laying the groundwork for the 2014 Briley WCSC, scheduled for the weekend after Father's Day. All of the sponsors who I have spoken to have renewed, and in many cases upgraded their support. They agree with our focus & mission and are responding accordingly. We look forward to seeing you at the 2014 Briley WCSC. Jim
  12. Carlos- Please try to show up as early as you can. From all indications, Sunday will be VERY busy and we would like to get everyone finished as early as possible so we can begin the prize distribution in a timely fashion. Jim
  13. With less than a week to go, the Briley WCSC are almost here. Response from both the industry and competitors has been absolutely fantastic. As of this moment, our over 70 sponsors have provided a bountiful prize table in excess of $92,000, including 32 firearms. Our Virtual Prize Table is now two pages long and is a showcase of the best the industry has to offer: http://www.westcoaststeelchamps.com/VPT.htm and http://www.westcoaststeelchamps.com/VPT2.htm Several of our sponsors will be on hand to display and sell their products, with special pricing at the match. Please stop by and tell them how much you appreciate their support. Likewise, we have already exceed last year's total entries with more coming in every day. If you haven't already signed up yet or would like to enter another gun, space & time permitting, you may still do so up until noon on Sunday. Registration is open at 7AM, with shooting beginning immediately afterwards on both days. That being said, please schedule your time on the range wisely as you must be on the range shooting your last gun by 1:30 on Sunday. For those who have signed up before 6/15, you will receive a Tacos Don Chente meal ticket, courtesy of Mixon Targets for each entry, up to a maximum of two. They will be good either day for either breakfast OR lunch. That's right, Tacos Don Chente will also be serving a delicious Mexican breakfast as well as lunch. For those without meal tickets, food and drinks will be available at nominal cost. If you are arriving early and would like to practice, the range will be open Wednesday on from 8AM to 5PM. The daily range fee is $20, which includes the Thompson facility fee. The 2013 Briley West Coast Steel Championships promises to be an absolutely stellar event and one that you will not want to miss. Mike Dalton and I have been hard at work preparaing to produce the quality of event that you have come to expect from us. Please travel safely. We look forward to seeing you on the range! Jim http://www.westcoaststeelchamps.com/
  14. Warren- It is with tears and a heavy heart that I recount what happened. Vera was practicing at Chapman last week. The weather was crap and the range was muddy. At the end of the day, she went to retrieve her target and slipped, causing her to fall like Joe Theismann on Monday Night Football. She couldn't put any weight on her leg and had to crawl 30 feet in the mud to get to her car & cell phone. X-rays showed compound fractures with her lower leg broken in 2 places. The next day she had surgery and a titanium rod and multiple pins were inserted. She is now resting and recovering. Needless to say, her season is over. Vera called me on the day all of this happened and has kept me informed and updated on her progress. As you would expect, she is disappointed, but remains her usual positive and upbeat self. Her heart, will and desire remain unchanged and are perhaps even stronger. She says she is looking forward to working hard and coming back strong for next year's Cup and World Match. I joked that she didn't need her leg to dry fire and she said she was already working on that. Vera is one of the truly good people in our sport and is one of the reasons why the Bianchi Cup is so special. She loves the Cup more than anybody, works harder at it than anybody and is always looking to recruit and help new shooters get involved. This year's event will be diminished by her absence. She mentioned that she was looking into ways to have her roses delivered to this year's awards banquet. Life is not fair (and sometimes cruel) and this could not have happened to a nicer person. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers and send positive energy her direction. Honor her by enjoying your best performance ever at this year's Cup. Jim
  15. Hi Kurt! This is the age old dilemma that match directors have been dealing with since the beginning of time. Let me start out by saying that no matter how you decide to organize and distribute the prizes, you will never make everyone happy. The only thing you can do is make your decision, announce how things will be done in advance of the event, stick to your guns and let the shooter decide if he/she will participate. That being said, at the Briley West Coast Steel Championships we give out plaques to division/category winners and all of the merchandise prizes by random drawing. No matter what firearm a competitor chooses (Open, Limited, Production, Optic or Iron Sight revolver, Cowboy, Optic or Iron Rimfire Pistol or Rifle, etc.), the entry fee is the same and the opportunity to choose any particular prize is equal for all shooters, no matter how many others are entered in any of the divisions/categories. It may or may not be popular with a particular person, but they know how things will be done and they accept it when they choose to send in their entry fee. To entice people to enter, we post the products our sponsors have committed to provide on our Virtual Prize Table pages: http://www.westcoaststeelchamps.com/VPT.htm and http://www.westcoaststeelchamps.com/VPT2.htm We also allow multiple trips to the prize table for multiple entries. Not knowing very much about the organization of 3 Gun matches, I’m not sure how a random order prize table would go over with the multitude of firearm types and skill levels of your shooter demographics. As the match director, you are doing all of the work and have earned the authority to make decisions according to what you feel are in the best interests of the event, the sponsors and the shooters. If anyone feels differently, they are certainly welcome to organize and promote an event in their own vision. The beauty of our sport is that there is a multitude of differently run events that we have the freedom to choose from. Jim
  16. Mike Dalton, the event staff & I are working hard and things are progressing at a rapid pace towards the 2013 Briley West Coast Steel Championships on June 22 & 23. As mentioned before, we have LOTS of new things in store for our shooters this year, including: Courtesy of Mixon's Targets, a catered lunch from Don Chente Mexican Restaurants will be provided to competitors on both days Archangel/Promag is hosting a special side event benefitting the California Rifle & Pistol Assn. (the NRA lobbying affiliate in CA) STI has designated the Briley WCSC as one of their Contingency Rewards Program events And did I mention the one and only BRILEY WCSC VIRTUAL PRIZE TABLE with over $80,000 in prizes, including 25 guns and growing daily? http://www.westcoast...mps.com/VPT.htm The 2013 table is now so big, we've had to start a 2nd page! http://www.westcoast...ps.com/VPT2.htm Everything will be given out by order of random drawing with one ticket per every gun entered (Enter 4 guns, get 4 tickets and 4 prizes!) Links to entry forms and discounted rate booking at the match hotels are located at the bottom of the webpage: http://www.westcoaststeelchamps.com/ The 2013 Briley West Coast Steel Championships is sure to be one of the most fun and lucrative events you'll ever attend. Ok, who's coming?
  17. The 2013 Briley WCSC website is now live: http://www.westcoaststeelchamps.com/ and includes links to the Virtual Prize Table: http://www.westcoast...mps.com/VPT.htm and the entry form & match information: http://www.westcoast..._entry_form.doc At the SHOT Show, we had an excellent response from all of our existing sponsors (many who upgraded levels), caught the interest of many new companies, a few of which jumped on board as well. Notable additions were Trijicon & Leupold. Please check the match website and the VPT for sponsor & event updates and for the latest additions to the prize table as they arrive. We have also negotiated a great rate at the Stevenson Ranch Hampton Inn and Valencia Courtyard by Marriott. Please book by 5/23/12 to get the special rate. OK, who's in?
  18. The thread with all information and updates on the 2013 event is here: http://www.brianenos...howtopic=166965 Jim

  20. You are most certainly allowed and welcome to enter both optic and iron sight rimfire pistols at the Briley West Coast Steel Championships. In fact, you are welcome to do the same with optic and iron sight rimfire rifles and of course, centerfire handguns as well. Jim
  21. For over 15 years, I had used a Tasco PDP4 (the big 45mm “beer can”) w/ a 15 MOA dot mounted on my Briley steelgun with a Briley mount, which accommodated the PDP4’s integral Weaver clamp. Even though the scope was over 8 oz. and sat at a significantly high distance over the bore axis, it served me well for many years and I was able to achieve some level of success with the system. About 4 years ago, I got an itch to try something different and 3 WEEKS BEFORE the Steel Challenge, I took off the Tasco and clamped an Aimpoint Micro directly to the Briley mount on my steelgun. Like others have commented, I was initially concerned with the Micro’s smaller field of view and the 4 MOA dot size. This was all a moot point as the first time out with the Micro, I shot my FASTEST TIME OF THE YEAR. Needless to say, I immediately switched to the Micro and haven’t looked back since. Here are some of MY observations, YMMV: 1. The Micro’s smaller FOV is a non-issue. Dry fire and range time will naturally adapt your point of aim and index. If you do your job & look at the target, the dot will find your eyes. I was able to make the change from one of the biggest sights to one of the smallest w/ almost zero transition time. 2. Related to #1, the lowering of the dot to the bore axis does give a more natural point. Briley now has a mount specifically designed for the Micro, where the Picatinny clamp is eliminated and the dot sits about 3/8” closer to the bore axis. 3. I absolutely prefer the 4 MOA dot to the 15 MOA for steel and all other shooting. It allows me to shoot more precisely and has the added benefit of making the plate look bigger. Aimpoint’s incredibly bright dot makes it easy to pick up, even on a white plate in the direct sunlight at Piru. 4. The weight of the Micro and Briley mount is around 4 oz., half that of the Tasco, and w/ significantly less bulk. 5. My experience is that the Micro has been extremely reliable, especially compared to the Tasco. I have far less anxiety worrying about an intermittent dot or flameout (but out of paranoia and ingrained habit, I still keep my fingers crossed). 6. The Micro holds zero well and adjustments are easy and repeatable. 5 clicks up, 5 left, 5 down and 5 right puts you back in the same place. When arriving to a match after airline travel, I always check zero and have never found any shift. The bottom line is that I am VERY happy with the Aimpoint Micro and also use the sight on my Model 41 and Tactical Solutions X-Ring rifle for steel shooting and rimfire matches. I also have to mention that I am currently sponsored by Briley and Aimpoint. As with the products of all of my sponsors, I honestly believe in them and have purchased them BEFORE I received their support and will continue to do so if I ever retire from competitive shooting. Jim
  22. Thanks for the kind words; Im glad you enjoyed it. Im FINALLY at a point where I can begin to relax after completing all of the post match follow-up and thanking all 70 of our sponsors for generously providing over $75k in prizes for everyone to take home. Special thanks go out to Mike Dalton and the ISI staff for all of their efforts running a smooth & efficient match and making sure the needs of the shooters & sponsors were well taken care of. Super special thanks go out to the 214 entries that travelled from Japan, Taiwan, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, South Dakota, Illinois, Georgia, Florida and of course, all parts of California to support our vision of what a shooting event should be. Congratulations to each and every one of them on having a safe, courteous and fine shooting performance as well as for contributing to the overall friendly & FUN atmosphere of the event. Work has already begun on the 2013 Briley WCSC, scheduled for June 22 & 23. I better start hustling if Im going to raise the $100k in prizes that Dalton challenged me to have on next years table… Thanks again for making all of our efforts worthwhile and fulfilling. Jim
  23. I will be there (actually I'm already here), but am not sure if I will be able to shoot the match. The weather is PERFECT, the range looks great with all of our sponsors' banners hanging and I have organized the prizes into some pretty impressive packages. Mike Dalton, all of the range & match staff and I have worked hard and done everything we can to put on a first class event. It is now up to the shooters to compete fairly & safely and have a great time. There is still room for last minute entries, so come on out and shoot. If I don't already know you, please look out for me and introduce yourself. I will be the guy with the biggest smile on the range...
