  1. The main thing with CZ vs. Tanfoglio....quality control. I bought a Witness Limited recently, and was disappointed with the gun. Some of the parts on the gun were sub-par, and I have read that is common with them. The CZ might take a little bit of work....but there is a reason the gun was in the hands of the top shooters at the last IPSC World Shoot (1st and 2nd.

    Hi there people,

    Ok,

After a lot of my own research, and personal preferences I had it narrowed down to two 9mm pistols... the Cz sp-01 Shadow, and FNH fnp-9. I decided on the cz shadow for its known accuracy, and the fact that is has a 22lr kit available. so I jumped on a couple CZ forum's. Hense, I learned about the EAA Witness, wow talk about conversion barrels...sweet. I leaned heavy towards the Witness Match in 9mm. Just like the CZ Shadow it is "tuned" ready to go from the factory's shop. However, I do not want single action only, which is the only way the Match comes. I would like DA/SA... reliability... accuracy...price. So, I am going to give an EAA Witness steel fullsize (non Match) a try. I will probably order one this weekend. What would I need to do, or order to tune the stock Witness into a "tack driver" / home defense capable weapon. This would be my first fullsize auto (grew up on revolvers, and own a Ruger GP100 357 mag., Colt 32 special revolver, and a p.o.c. standard arms sa-9). The model I am looking at I believe is 999101. Any suggestions out there.

    Thanks, Chew

  2. Yep, I'm waiting for a longer version of the trigger. My long digits don't like short triggers.

Been out of the loop lately with revolver, but looking toward the next 3gun season and wondered if anyone had any updates on these. Thanks,

    Lee

  3. You could always run some SOLO 1000, alot of people like it with moly bullets. It's a nice behaving single base powder like N320.

good to know on the smoke. I guess I will change my search back up and start trying to find some more n320 and just stick with what i know there. Everything will be going through my g22 i use for work.

from looking online. it seems as though I should get whatever primers i can and maybe be a little less picky. I had wanted to switch to tightgroup because i thought it would be a powder i could use for both 38 spl and the 40. but the smoke is bad now. so that seems to be a no go. and I still have nearly 8k moly bullets to go :D

thanks for the insight and help.

  4. So, how did I screw up? Thinking the barrel was stainless....and cleaning it in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and peroxide. :( It sure looks stainless, but doesn't seem it be. The bore is now etched in spots.    I shot a match Sun. with it, and had no trouble shooting A zone shots at 35 yards with it. That being said, I will probably get a new barrel for it, just because it @#$#@% me off. The question is, is it an almost drop in part, or does it require extensive fitting? What are the steps in doing such a job? I have Kuhnhausen's 1911 book..how does the job for a Tanfo differ? Not having to send the gun off will save me some bucks! I've thought about just buying a complete Match top end for it so I won't have to worry about fitting a barrel. Thanks in advance for the help!

  5. Holy $#&*! 50 lbs....

I know one thing, a pile of Clays and a stream of powder from it...will go up in a pillar of flame like a rocket exhaust! I know this because I once put some Universal Clays in a jar of Clays and had to dispose of it.

Yeah, shooting Clays is kind of like dancing with the devil when it comes to over pressure situations. But when you have almost 50lbs of Clays to use up like I do you get use to stepping into the ring with the beast

  6. How true. I should just stick with my current load, it's well tested and I've had zero problems with it. I know I don't want to have to buy 1000 bullets to see if I like the 200gr bullet. I tried the Clays before, feels great, but my range pickup brass doesn't like it! The Solo hasn't ever separated a case head on me.

Shooting good is hard enough without adding another variable of continually changing your load setup.

  7. Yes, I've done a search...

I'm currently running a Limited .40 with a lightened slide (like a Limited custom or Gold team). My load now is a 185gr Precision moly with @4.6gr of Solo 1000. I've been interested in going to a 200gr bullet, but wonder if it will feel slow in the Limited? Anyone running this combo? Cha-Lee??

    Thanks!

  8. As much as I like Tanfoglios...for production, you can't really beat a CZ SP-01 or Shadow. That is , as long as the gun has the 85 Combat trigger in it. Those black curved triggers CZ puts in some guns SUCKS. Close enough in feel to a Tanfo to not make a difference.

I admit that I like the Tanfoglio line. I have two - one Limited, one Gold Custom. I am looking to further this trend by getting a production gun. I would like to keep the same size frame and feel, but I need one that is legal for the production game. This is not a carry weapon, but a competition one.

I have also been looking at a glock 34 and a sig P226.

I would appreciate your thoughts, comments and experiences. Questions also are welcomed.

    Thanks, Dwight

  9. I've found the matte areas of the tanfos are more prone to staining than the polished parts. THese guns in stainless would be awesome. One of these days, when the gun is looking a little ragged, I'll probably spring for an Ion Bond job. The crown on the muzzle looks sharp and even around part of the circumference , then suddenly get much wider and less sharp. I slide stop burr is really only an issue because I am running a Henning tightfit pin, so I can see the gouge it caused.

I shot my first match today with it, and it was 100% reliable. Not sure of the final score, but had a pretty solid match, and it was snowing.

I have the same issue with my slide stop and the same type of marks created by it. You'll probably find the same type of thing under one or both of the thumb safety levers. I polished up the back of both safety levers and the slide stop. The condition of the muzzle chamfer doesn't look bad IMO. The polygonal rifling used on these barrels is partly to blame for the uneven appearance of the muzzle.

Fit and finish of my pistol seems to be similar to yours and with the exception of the scratching caused by the slide stop lever seems to be mostly on par with 1911 style pistols in this price range IMO. You get to a point where you have to start looking at whether or not you'd be willing to spend and extra $200-$300 for such minor improvements. Personally, my biggest complaint is the quality of the chrome finish - it seems more like a semi-hard chrome finish to me. I had a need (don't ask) to run a file across the side of my slide to clean something up and it cut into the chrome in the first couple of strokes with very little pressure. I have a hard chrome open gun with a finish that is practically impervious to a file. My guess is that the quality of hard chrome that is feasible for gun finishing in the EU is simply less hard than what you can have done easily here in the states. I'd rather have the option stainless, but that's mostly personal preference. I am going to have my gun stripped and then redone with either NP3 or Ion-bond at some point.

  10. Yeah, I'm just whining because it's the most money I've spent on a pistol. I expect everything to be correct at the price. My SP-01 I've been using for 4 years looks pitiful, but it works. I get to see how it works in a match today. I've put a 14lb hammer spring and Henning firing pin. Trigger pull is nice, but I'd like to get a Henning LONG trigger whenever he gets those ready.

Quality Control from the factory can be sketchy on the fine details. I had a chance to handle 4 different brand new EAA Witness Limited's and they all had a different trigger pull weight/quality, safety function feel, slide to frame fit and barrel lockup quality. I was honestly shocked at how different each one was from one another. I really expected them to be a lot closer to one another given the price of the guns. But that is also part of the fun in my book. Taking a new pistol and making it function/feel how you want it to.

Everyone has a different expectation of quality as well. I could care less about little scratches here or there as using them in match conditions will put them through some pretty brutal conditions anyway. My current work horse looks like it has gone a couple rounds in the ring with Mike Tyson but it still functions 100% of the time and is capable of shooting far beyond my abilities, so I could care less of how it “Looks”. As long as it goes boom when I pull the trigger and the shots go where I intend them to go, I am happy.

  11. I bought my first new Tanfo last week, after months of deliberation. I have supersighted Match .40 I bought used, and it's been perfection with Henning grips and fiber front sight. I also picked up a set of used Henning grips for a Match several months ago, since it was too go of a deal to pass up. Yesterday, I chopped them with a band saw to Limited length, and finished them off with a hand file. They fit TIGHT, and look and feel great!

However, I'm less than impressed with the quality control on this gun. I've found several flaws from new...

    1) Slide stop... The shaft of the stop is gnarled in one spot, destined to break and the inside of the lever had a burr which cut into the finish of the pistol. I am going to run a Henning tightfit pin in it, though.

    2) Barrel crown...WTF? Visibly FUBAR see pic. I will probably have Rich at Canton Creek re-crown it when I send in the slide for weight reduction. Not sure I want to send it to EAA, they would probably want me to send the whole damn gun.

    3) Scratches....Came with several scratches, including the one previously mentioned. A 1911 newbie style scratch and another in front of the safety.

I had to order one from out of state (from a large internet gun store) so I couldn't look at it beforehand, and the flaws weren't obvious when I picked it up.

At least the slide to frame fit is pretty good, as is the barrel.

it just po's me when I buy something new and it should have never left the factory in the first place.

  12. It looks a lot like Clays. I get very little deviation with Solo 1000 shooting in 9 and 40 major. Somewhere in this forum is a comparison shot of the two powders.

How is the size of Solo 1000 grains compared to Clays? Is it more like Clays (big) or more like W231, Titegroup, or HS-6 (small)?

    My powder measure is picky.

  13. Too bad CZ doesn't make a 5in stainless 75SA...that would rock for IDPA shooting (though my SP-01 is awesome, too)

Man, that's awesome. Thanks for sharing that!

Wouldn't want to snap a pick of the front of the slide would you (with the comp removed). Seems as though a open CZ could still be made the same way.....

  14. I've got a .40 Match (supersights+ Henning grips) it weighs in at 41.9 ounces with one mag. I've been thinking about shooting one in .45 to compete in CDP in IDPA, but the weigh limit is 41 oz. I'm curious as to how much the different steel .45 Witness variations weigh ( Match, Limited Pro, standard steel, older limited)????????

Has anyone weighed their gun? I have a cheap digital scale from Harbor Freight and have to weigh the slide and frame separately.

  15. I've gotten laser beam accuracy with Clays behind Precision Delta 124 JHPs in my SP-01. It's a fairly inflexible combo in the CZ though, as they start engaging the rifling if you try to load them much more than 1.12, but hit @130pf out of my gun.

Shifted over to 124gr bullets earlier this year like them better than the 115's.

    Match load

    124gr Rem FMJ

    4.5 gr Win 231

    OAL 1.125

    Fed Primer

I ran these thru the crono the other day with an STI GP6 came out around 130 Power factor.

    Also started loading

    124gr Rainier JHP

    4.5gr Win 231

    OAL 1.055

    Fed Primers

Ran these thru the crono also with the STI came out to 135+ Power Factor.

If I had more of these Rainiers that's what I would load for matches now. Soft and accurate. I shoot a G19 and they run great.

  16. It's an older small frame gun, probably early '90s. Should be reliable. I think Mec-Gar still makes small frame mags, CZ 75 mags usually work, too, even though they are slightly different.

    Greetings to all.....

I'm a bit new to the Tangfoglio's, but not to shooting. I have shoot a few EAA/Tangfoglio's and CZs over the years, but just never really spent time to learn about them. Apparently I just caught the bug and have been looking for one that might fit my fancy. I am in the process of purchasing this pistol and have some questions. I was hoping that this might be the place for some help.

First off this is the pistol I am purchasing:

    DSC03515.jpg

    DSC03507.jpg

It's 9mm and has been hard chromed as well as a trigger/trigger work added.

I believe it is an older limited, but the current owner does not know if it's an older smaller frame or if it's new enough to be the larger frame. The owner states that the mags are 15 rounds, but I can't find any reference's to 15 round Witness mags in 9mm. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Is it a smaller frame or larger frame pistol. If it is a smaller frame pistol, are mags readily available for it as well as 22 and 40SW conversion uppers? I'm kind of hoping that it's the smaller frame as they fit my smaller hands much better, but if it's a large frame I can cope with it.

Oh......are there scope mount available for this pattern now?

If anyone can shed some light on it I would appreciate it.

    Thanks a head of time.

    Nox
