  1. Glad your friend finally found a platform. I have friends like yours. They are a pain in the ass (but still my friends). At some point, after you've given your advice, you just need to leave this type of person alone and and maybe one day, when they are ready, they'll show up at a match. From past experience, the wishy washy decision making on what gear to use is really a way of saying they are not ready to start shooting yet for whatever reason.

  2. You probably know this already, but the sights go on right to left (and off left to right). On my first removal, I made the mistake of trying to pound it in the wrong direction and they wouldn't come off. Went the other way and, while it still took effort, I finally got them off.

  3. A lot of forums have members posting their times, they are having a lot of fun with it. I think it is pretty cool IMO.

    Ted

So...anyone that has shot this, care to post your division, class and times?

  4. I shot this last weekend, it was a fun match. Thanks to all those involved in making it happen.

I noticed this on the FAQ's "...in order to keep people from abusing the results, they will be posted at the end of the match..." I guess this means there isn't a site like last year where we can check the current standings and have to wait until after October? Would there be any objection to people posting their times here? I think I did ok against local competition but I'm curious how it stacks up against the national average. I'm not sure how knowing how you did before the match is over is abusing the results but can respect if you don't want that info given out before all of the scores are in.

  5. Just an FYI,

The place is called the Philippines.

People from the Philippines are Filipino.

It was originally named by Spain as "Las Islas Filipinas" but was it was changed after the U.S. annexation. To make things more confusing it used to be (and sometimes still is) called Pilipino in the Philippines because there is no "F" in the Filipino language!

In any case...the guy can Phlat out shoot!!!!

  6. I recommend getting the Dawson .125x.265 tall target front and filing to the width you desire and then installing and filing for your POI and then adding a little cold blue to treat the raw surface.

This sounds like the best solution. You'll get the exact POA/POI you want, the plain front AND it will be cheaper. I might give it a try myself but with the .100 width.

  7. I read an old 2003 Front Sight article that Patrick Kelly wrote about the Turkey Guns (guns from Turkey, not Turkey hunting). From what I understand the ALS2100 12 gauge takes Remington extensions and it loads well because the lifter stays down (or up depending on how you hold the gun).

I have a line on a lightly used ALS 2100 20 gauge and was wondering if anyone knows if the Remmy 20 gauge tubes will work on this gun and if the lifter works the same as the 12 gauge (staying down). I already have an 1187 but I'm thinking about buying it a a cheap backup/loaner gun since the price was so inviting.

    TIA.

  8. It's not the rear sights fault its hitting high...but the relationship of the front to the rear. I have a M&P Pro with the Sevigney Comp rear and Dawson .180x.100 FO front. For me, it hits just slightly high at 25 yards. Not sure how much of that are the sights and how much is user error. Anything under 20 yards and the sights seem like they are dead on, so it might be me.

I think the Warren rears are a little higher than the factory rear. If you look at the Warren set for the 4.25" gun their front sight is listed at .165 tall (factory is .160). Why? I would bet a .185 sight would get you closer to POI on the 5" gun. Kenny from Speedshooters can make custom sizes as mentioned above. Dawson has a FO that is .190 in different widths that might also work for you. You might want to start tall and file it down yourself in between shooting groups to get it exact. We all see the sights differently.

  9. ....the other was a welding cart both had bicycle wheels. I'm not a big fan of Harbor Freight tools but these looked pretty good.

I have the welding cart from HF. Its sturdy as hell and will roll over anything. When modified, there is enough room for 4 long guns + and gear for 2 shooters. You need a truck or SUV to haul it though. I fit it in my wife's Accord once with the rear wheels removed from the cart and the back seats folded down, but it was tight!

  10. Is he off in space somewhere, or is he somehow correct?

Can I use the Knoxx Spec Ops stock for the Tactical Division?

    In Christ: Raymond

I think he is referring to the Compstock which looks like a standard shotgun stock from the outside. But who knows, things have changed since 04. I know the M4 type stock you have on your gun is available as a factory option from Remington. If someone shoots that gun, its not a "modification" but a factory installed option, right?

I would suggest before you buy or do anything, just showup to your local range(s) hosting 3 gun and check with the MD. I'd be willing to be that he would be fine with what you have regardless of what the USPSA rules say. The important thing is to get you shooting 3 gun, equipment details can be worked out later.

  11. I don't know why a recoil reducing stock would put you in Open, never seen a rule about it... Mag capacity, glass, bipods, and ported barrels put you in Open.

    jj

It was discussed before here http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=69953 not sure a definitive answer was ever given though.

I did find this in the 04 USPSA Shotgun Competition Rules...does it also apply to 3 gun?

    US APPENDIX D3

    Factory Production Criteria and Modifications

    3. External modifications that are specifically NOT allowed:

    • Weights or devices to control or reduce recoil, except for recoil pads fitted to the rear face of the stock of the shotgun

The Knoxx "Recoil Reducing" Stock is definitely a device that reduces recoil!!!

  12. That recoil reducing stock will put you in Open if I'm not mistaken. If that's the case, put your red dot back on a just shoot it in Open as is. Open and pump will be tough though!

Your going to have to change your gun around a lot to make it work better for 3 gun and in the end, it still won't be ideal. I'd just keep the 870 as your home defense gun and get a cheap 1100 to hack on.

barrel length: 22-24" is popular. 22" will line up well with a 8+1 mag extension. But whatever length you get just be sure it's choked. Cylinder bore guns have a hard time on long steel at our club.

  13. I would guess I removed about a 1/2" to 5/8"? I used a belt sander to radius the tip then finished with fine sandpaper. I also had to narrow it to fit a 20 gauge. I can't compare it to a fullsize because I cut it down before I even tried it in the gun. It has worked 100% and I don't feel like more ramp would help guide the shell any better. It doesn't hang down as far so there is less chance of it snagging on something. I've fumbled a reload before and didn't push the shell all the way in and the cut-down EZLoader caught the shell, which I then pushed back in with the next shell. The loading gate on a 20 is really small so the extra room for my thumb helps.

Picture of EricW's cutdown EZLoader here. Looks like its cut down even more than mine.

    http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?...amp;hl=EZloader

  14. which brings me back to the 11-87 Sporting Youth in 20. Are there any off-setting concerns I should know about ...

The 1187 Youth Sportsman has a plastic trigger assembly where an older "wingmaster" 1100 20 is metal. The metal finish on the Sportsman line sucks. Its like a fake parkerized finish. I think its just blued over a rough beadblasted metal if I'm not mistaken. That being said, it works just fine from light 7/8ths loads to #3 buck to slugs. The barrel length at 21" is about perfect lining up just short of an 8+1 extension. With an external choke its even.

You'll absolutely need to add/modify an EZLoader to work with it to be competitive. I narrowed and shortened mine and it hasn't failed yet. if you get a full frame 20 it will fit like the 12 gauge. I also opened up the loading port. A 3GG 7-shot sidesaddle fits. Nordic and Choate make extensions.

I'm not sure if Remington still makes the youth sportsman? I think its been replaced by the "Compact Sportsman" which may suite your needs better. it comes with an adjustable LOP kit, a "SuperCell" recoil pad and a slight cosmetic redesign of the stock.

  15. God forbid that your wife would have to use it for home defense but if she did a prosecutor would treat your purpose built 3 gun shotgun the same way as Winchester's Black Talon's were treated before they were replaced with LE only Ranger's. Do both of you a favor and buy a gun to fit her and a different one for you to play with.

The gun was "purposely built" for legal sporting competition, not for shooting at bad guys? Would it be her fault if it happens to be the first gun available to her to use in SD? As you said...God forbid.

And what about all of those purpose build home Defense shotguns available straight from the factory? The Mosberg "Defender" or the Winchester "Defender", Rem "Police" etc. let alone those evil black rifles. Should everyone ditch those in favor of single shot "Quail Hunter" models so it looks good in court?

  16. I've been shooting a 20 gauge 1187 youth in 3 gun for 2 years now. I think it offers more bang for the buck vs the Benelli. I picked mine up new for $475 and modified an EZLoader to fit and added a Choate extension. Total investment under $600. Even less if you can find a good used gun. I went with the 1187 because it can take 3" shells thinking I may need some extra shot/power for the long shots but have never needed it. 7/8ths loads takes down everything. The biggest advantage is that I can fit 4 or 5 shells in my hand while weakhand loading vs 3 for the 12 gauge. it is also lighter and swings faster than the 12.

I would also have no problem trusting this gun for Home Defense. Massad Ayoob praised the 20 gauge for home defense and said that one shot of buck from a 20 would equal 2 simultaneous hits of a 44 magnum. As mentioned above, the short length (youth model stock and barrel) and light weight make it very handy.

It wasn't too long ago that "reduced recoil 12 gauge" MEANT a 20 gauge.

  17. Bullets forward, but my reload/emergency mag is a 20 rounder. The baseplate fits in the palm like a pistol mag and I can get a finger on the nose of the bullet like a pistol mag. Plus it fits on the belt better.

Most of the time 2 cinched mags, a 40 rounder or my 90 rounder does the job but on those drill stages that require a reload, the 20 reloads faster off the belt or table then a 30 rounder for me.
