JasonP
I just ordered my first personal AR (JP CTR-02 with an 18" barrel). Yeah I know it's a hell of a first gun, fortunately I can afford it at this point and I knew I would want one eventually anyway. I want a good all-around gun and wanted some of you guy's opinion on the best barrel length. I want a good long range gun but not too long to hinder shooting while moving around and 3-gun competition in the future. I know there is no perfect gun for all occasions I was just wondering what the "norm" was. Edited November 5, 2009 by JasonP
TruePunisher
More often then not I think people are using an 18" or some brand or another. Depends on where you are shooting and the distances you will be shooting. Shorter distances more people will go with the 16" Medium to longer distances people will go with the 18" or 20". 18" is the best of both worlds. jmurch
Irons or optics? In my experience shooting irons the sight radius is the factor more than barrel length............... I can shoot my 16" with rifle gas (1:8 twist) and a 20" sight radius at hi-power matches and can get pretty much the same scores at 500yds as I do with my 20" otherwise identical NM rifle. prreed10
I am waiting on a barrel for my 3 gun rifle - its 18", 1 in 8 rate of twist and midlength gas system.
Merlin Orr
Little difference from 16-20... A little velocity difference but VERY little in accuracy. The long gas system is what you do not want to vary from... ...of course just my .02.
blkbrd
JP 18" mid weight IS the perfect gun for everything from 4 to 400 yards.
Tzygä
I like 18" barrel be the best for me.
kellyn
There is no consensus. I like an 18 for a tac scope or open gun. But many other shooters do very well with a 20. The most important thing is to get a good zero and practice. And then practice again.
bulamike
16 for me, so many other factors involved, twist rate, ammo, distance on range. 18's solid, little long for me, but should work fine.
