38 Short Colt

For what its worth, I use Rainier plated 158RN with 4.5grns of IMR 4756 in Short Colt cases. My 627 will shoot all of them in the X ring at 50.

I probably overstated the issue with plated bullets. I actually had pretty decent accuracy with Rainiers in my 625. But when one of the bullets came apart in the barrel of my gun at the Summer Blast last year, spraying three close targets full of tiny little shrapnel holes, I decided not to trust plated bullets for match use anymore. I shot up what I had left and switched to Zeros for major matches and RNL for local matches.

I have been trying to replicated the 1.130 OAL and IMR 4756 accuracy with the 158 Rainier and have not been able to come close. The cases seem to bulge from the bullet depth and interior dimensions of the case causing the seating depth to be eratic at best and the OAL deviation as much as .012 over a group of ten shells. I believe the internal case resistance is causing the bullet to displace the spring inside the seater die causing the OAL variation. Any ideas on how to get the accuracy with a slightly longer 1.150 OAL and IMR 4756.

Got a chance to shoot my 627 Pro (4") tonite. WW 38 special brass trimmed to .900, Fed 100, Precision 147 FP sized .358, 1.250" oal. Rested with a red dot, 25yds.

3.8 gr WST, 845 fps, 9.4 SD

4.0 gr WST, 885.6 fps, 9.5 SD

4.0 gr Solo 1000, 887.7 fps, 12 SD

7.5 gr AA#9, 834.7 fps, 24 SD

Best groups were with AA#9 and Solo 1000. Both went just under 2" @ 25 yds, 8 (and 16) rd groups. AA#9 needs 7.8 gr, Solo 1000 could drop to 3.9, for 125+ PF. I was looking for 870 fps. Those will be tried next.

3.8 gr WST went just over 2", 4.0 gr opened up to 4".

I realize these aren't in 38 SC cases but I think the oal is in your ballpark.

depending on how much you're swelling the cases, try one of those lee final size dies. the top end/taper crimp part is junk, but that bottom carbide ring works really good. been doing kinda the same thing w/ a 220gr. .40 bullet, and that die irons out the bulge pretty good. if it's too bad, well......cliff and i argue about this all the time, but y'all know that story, so......i use one pretty much on all my stuff now. scrounge range brass w/a good roll crimp won't go in my 625 hardly at all, after that die, no problem, works great. midway dealer cost is all of $15, so........

These were loaded on a square deal B. A mix of 38 special and 9mm/38 acp dies.

Just to put things in perspective I shot a "reference" load also. R-P 38 special brass, same Precision 147 FP sized .358, 1.410 oal, Fed 100, 4.0 gr Solo 1000. 811.5 fps, 16.4 SD. 8 rds went into a 3/4" group at 25 yds. So much for bullet jump not making a difference.

Wow, so if you use .357 brass, you might be able to get the group to look like a .22 hole! ;)

I don't believe the OAL has any contribution to accuracy. The OAL I used is not based on anything. When I started using short brass I just kept pushing the bullet down until it looked about right and the load worked. You should adjust the load to work best in you gun.

I use an old RCBS 357 seat die which does not have a spring so the bullet goes to the same place whether is likes it or not. BTW, with my load you can see exactly where the base of the bullet is in the case.
