The noise around the birds could just be normal Jpeg compression. BITD when I was a professional photo-faker: We would never use a compressed image file format, but these days everyone and their brother/sister/aunt can re-post an image in any format so you just can't be sure where the original image came from. -Chet ETA: Back when my team faked the image above it took two rooms of super-cooled computers and tape drives two weeks to get realistic-looking results. Today I could produce the same image in a half hour on my laptop. NEVER believe any incredible image that you see on the 'web these days.
