PK1911
While "moving in the open", and engaging "in the open targets", can I iniatate a reload whith a round still in the chamber, or do I need to go to slide lock, before reloading?
Racinready300ex
Only if you are not exposed to unengaged targets. Note targets hidden from view by a vision barrier in the open would still count as you being exposed to them. In that case you need to go to slide lock. Stage designers will try to trick you into reloading at the wrong time and getting a PE.
Jim Watson
The nearest regulation match is run with a lot of vision barrier tricks. Shooters have developed vision barrier tricks to counter them.
Racinready300ex
One trick if you want to reload in the open where there is a unengaged target behind a vision barrier so you can't see it. Say you fire your 10th round from cover, you step one foot over the fault line ....now you're "in the open and exposed to that target" fire that last round and initiate your slide lock reload while moving to see the open target. Between things like that and round dumping you can do some silly things, but you don't really have a choice.
PK1911
So, It appears from replies, that you must be at slide lock to reload "in the open"?

That is why @Racinready300exsuggested the strategy that he described. if you went to slide lock behind a fault line and then stepped over the fault line on your way towards the "in the open" targets and at that point initiated your reload you would incur a penalty. racknrider
Whether or not there is cover on the stage also matters
