Are there extended mag releases and/or safeties available? What about thumbrests (either NitroFin style or using the pre-drilled holes in the frame)? Are holsters interchangeable with other models?

The answer is yes, there's a lot of stuff available for Tanfos.

Matt, if you need a smaller grip CZ TS or Shadow 2 will fit the bill better than a Tanfo.

As far as holsters go, the Stock 3 holster will fit the Stock 2 and limited. It will not fit properly the CZ Shadow 2 of TS. It will also not fit the Poly Tanfo.

What needs to be done to the gun out of the box?

Honestly the gun will shoot fine out of the box, but... If you want a smooth competition trigger you must do some polishing and change some springs. It's best if you don't know how to work on the Tanfo to have an expert GS do the work. Henning Group in Colorado, Patriot Defense and J & M are the best.

Hi Matt -

I ordered a DLM (black & chrome) in 9mm from Patriot Defense. They currently are working their magic on custom work etc and have been very good to me. So much so I also ordered a Stock 2 Chrome on 9mm with some custom work, extra mags, mag base plates, and grips.

Both are small frames and accept the same magazines (6 total for me between the two). They are different frames. Holsters for the DLM are compatible with any Stock 3 frame holsters (4.75inch barrel). Many holster companies make them depending on what type you are looking for (competition, carry, leather, poly/cadet/plastic). You may want to go with a well known company and not rely on online reviews outside an owners forum. Try YouTube if you can’t find any.

Stock 2 frames may be compatible with some CZ holsters which could open up options, quality, price, style variables.

CZ TSO models may be compatible with some Tanfo Stock 3 frames. Keep your receipt if you are uncertain

As for hand size, what size winter glove do you wear? What’s nice about the Tanfo is the reach is pretty manageable due to the long beaver tail providing better leverage, high grip, pronounced safety, mag release, and other options available. One nice thing about not having larger hands will be having a better grip on the slide.

I take a size large glove but by no means have bigger than average hands. I’m a M/L in some and L in others.

Hope that provides a little help ….

G.

This was a massive help. Thank you for taking the time to write it all out! I'm usually a medium glove, but I got to play with a different large-frame Tanfo today and everything worked well enough that I placed an order for the Limited Master in .40. I'm really excited. About the only thing I can't reach is the mag release but I can get it with my weak-hand thumb; it's the same thing I do on 1911/2011's. I'm starting to research holsters and thumbrests now (because gaming is life!).

I don't think you're wrong about the Shadow 2. I was happy enough with how the Tanfo fit to order one today; I can say that if I was considering a DA/SA model, I'd be going with the CZ for sure. On a SAO gun, the trigger was close enough to not be a problem.

Henning is local and I see him at matches a lot. I'll probably shoot it as-is for a while and then let Henning work his magic.

Matt congratulations! That’s great! Let me know where you land with holsters. I have a Black Scorpion Pro for my CZ P10F Competition that’s pretty decent. I’m exploring other options but will likely get one for the DLM.

I will be eager to hear how you feel about the 40. I was ambivalent between that and the 9. If you are so inclined, you can remove the mag base and replace the short grip with a full size grip. Patriot Defense sells a super sticky aggressive thin grip set that I’m going to try.

Swapping grips is pretty easy. I ordered the Xtreme silver grips for the Stock 2 which I’m excited about but they aren’t suppose to be very aggressive.

Looks like we should be getting to know our Tanfos about the same time :)

I went with .40 to run this gun in USPSA Limited. I'm not super recoil sensitive - my main IDPA gun is a Chiappa Rhino in .40, and that gun weighs 31oz and doesn't have a reciprocating slide - so I think shooting this cinderblock should work out fine, lol. I realized after the fact that I ordered the large frame and I could have gotten the small; my fault for not doing enough research ahead of time. I'm hoping it'll work out with my grip.

For holsters, I ordered the Ghost Hydra P+. I've used their race holsters before and I like the locking mechanism; the Hydra looks like a nice improvement since it has a little kydex to shield the gun and will still allow me to run a thumbrest.

Speaking of, I also ordered a Nitrofin and an IPSC Alex to see which will work better for me. Also four mags. And extensions. And a guide rod.

Today was a pricey day, lol.

Looking forward to learning this platform with you!

Hey buddy! Did you receive your goodies?! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts :)

Not yet. The thumbrests are coming from SSI and I have no idea when they're shipping. Similarly, the holster is direct from Ghost. Being Italian, their estimated ship time is sometime between "When we feel like it" and "F*** you.". 🤷‍♂️

I did get out to the range for a bit. The DLM shoots... well, exactly how I'd expect it to (which is to say "phenomenal"). I think I'm going to wind up using the Nitrofin rather than the IPSC Alex as my support thumb is naturally falling right over the slide lock. I also think I'm going to order Henning's front sight that's slightly narrower for a little extra daylight around the front fiber.

Mag-wise, I got both Defiant and Henning extensions and Grams guts. I like how the Hennings attach more, but neither will quite hold 20 rounds yet (I suspect the springs need to wear in a little). Even 19 is really tough to reload so I'll probably run it as an 18+1 gun for a bit.

Now it just needs a little brother. Maybe a Stock III-P? Or an older sister like a Domina? Going deep down the rabbit hole, lol.

Love it, that was really funny! And I’m half paisan 😄

So glad you received your DLM. Mine won’t arrive until next week. I hear ya on the rabbit hole, that’s why I ordered a Stock2 with custom bits. Which will arrive sometime in the next 6 months lol

stock 3 P are nice & I dig the Domina big time. I am right there with you, trying to exercise a modicum of self control :)

Looking forward to seeing where you go with it. I haven’t decided what I want to do yet. I did order 3 holsters …. which I’m slightly embarrassed about and hoping I will send at least one back to restore my self respect as I’m feeling close to gluttony

This is basically my standard operating procedure, lol. I got impatient and also ordered a Ghost Thunder, but that's from Shooter's Connection so I'll actually get it quickly.

In my defense, the Hydra is a race holster and the Thunder is a traditional kydex shell, so I feel like I'm exploring options rather than being wasteful. At least that's what I tell myself.

Ahem  …. if you decide you don’t like the Thunder, please let me know. I was going to order one but they were out of stock at the time. Happy to cover your purchase & shipping should it not be to your liking.

Did you find the slide pretty slick or low resistance stock? Curious if you lubricator prior to first shots or not. I asked PD to run a few mags in mine prior to shipping just in case

Cleaned and oiled it before the range. It's pretty slick - not like a hand-fit 2011, but definitely smooth.

I'll ping you about the holster if I decide to flip it!

Mine arrived today - buttery smooth. Effortless really on the slide and hammer. Love the mag well and the general feel is exceptionally comfortable. Grips are sharp enough but absent discomfort. Safety is a little resistant. The trigger must be 2lbs or less with nearly no take up upon the return. It is better than my expectations in both form and function. I’m sure its performance will be equally so. Comparable in size to my Springfield Armory Emissary 5’. Likely smaller but not by much than my CZ P10F Competition which has a 2-2.5lb trigger and yet seems less impressive than the Tanfo.

On my hip it’s not nearly the imposition I thought it might be. Looking forward to its sister 4.5’ PD version of the Xtreme

Quick update on holsters:

I bought two different styles of Ghost holster: the Hydra P+ (race retention) and the Thunder 3G (kydex shell), both advertised for the Stock I / Stock III. I actually like both, but the plan right now is to keep the Thunder as I mounted it directly onto a QLS fork without modifying it at all and trimmed away a bit of the backside to give clearance for my Nitro Fin.

Intriguingly, they both fit the Match Polymer I have (the single action version with the triangle dust cover). The screws on the Thunder need to be loosened but that's about it; I'd put in longer rubber bushings if I was setting the holster up for that gun permanently but it's my backup so I'm not worried about it. The Hydra works without modification but is a little tight. Again, if the Polymer was my primary, I'd probably make it work by adding a few washers between the holster's "shell" and "block" sections.

This is good to know. I just ordered a DLM-9SF and I've been looking at the Thunder holster. I use the QLS forks on all of my holsters and was wondering if it would attach to the Thunder. Any chance you have a picture?

I don't and I'm away from home. You'll just need to go to Ace and get the correct length hardware.
