rudder
Hey guys, Considering changing .40 STI Edge type to .38 super. The rim diameter difference between .40 and .38 super is .019" Changing barrel, extractor, and magazines should do it. Anyone out there that has done this? Your experiences? Thoughts? Thank you to all. Bill Rudder
jim vaughan
Don't. Sell the Edge and buy the 38SC. This advice is based on numerous attempts by lots of shooters that went down this route. You are missing the slide lightening, scope, scope mount, thumbshelf, racker, extended firing pin, cases, dies, bullets, etc.
Service Desk
I did my Edge...all it needs is a barrel and magazines. At the end of the day it comes down to the dollars. If you can get out of the 40 and into a 38 for no extra cost then changing the barrel and buying new mags is not worth it.
zzt
I'm curious as to why you would want to do this.
Silver_Surfer
Does your 40 STI have a fully supported barrel?

I already have the magazines, and tons of brass. IT wlll be used as a A fudgecicle nobody but a few crayon chewers and winder likkers want and steel gun. I bought two STI shortblocks in .40, and was considering this to use the super brass and 9mm bullets. Also, I can use this in the outlaw matches in my area. rudder
I did not write the fudgecicle thing, or crayon chewers comment. IT just appeared.
rudder
I already have the STI mags since I have had supers before. All my other STI's are .40's as I don't do open. My everyday carry is a STI custom like a EDGE. My idpa gun is a STI custom with bushing barrel, in .40 too. Brazos framed build is next, in 9mm. Using a super barrel and AFTEC extractor, this should work, much like the 9mm conversion barrels for the .40 Glock does. Of course using the super mags. Sell the brass. You'll get a very good price for it. Save the bullets for your 9mm build. 40 can do anything 38S can, and more. The only advantage of 38S is additional mag capacity. I don't think that is a big deal.
Trader
I put a bar sto bull bbl in a Caspian .40 slide. The bbl is 9mm. It runs flawlessly. A friend had a Kimber 9mm that would stove pipe on the last shot and asked me to adjust the extractor for him. Turns out it was a .40 cal slide.
