helping friend trouble shoot load problems

i was  shooting with friend to night and had an uncomfortable amount of "puff loads"

bullet left barrel

very soft recoil

some failure to eject or sillier fault

consistient oal ( out of 20 mic'd)

said casings had darker markings (scorch) than good cartridges

3 different guns

2 different shooters

i have 20 rounds that i will weigh later

no weights yet

thinking out loud.......

is it possible powder gets " damp"

it is possible, eventough he has powder check,  that powder weight is off.....  With  3.8 title group load how sensitive is powder check? ( I'll weigh in am)   I'm a 550 guy so I know

i doubt bullet Diameter would make that big a difference.?

Static ice charge affecting drop?

Sounds to me like there wasn't enough powder in the cases.

Do you have a good light source and do you ALWAYS check each case

visually to make sure you have a decent amount of powder in the case

before you seat each and every bullet?

Might be short stroking and not getting full amount of powder - or you

have some wear in the powder dispensing area (springs, etc).

I'd throw 20 cases full of powder and manually measure each one -

see what's going on ....  See how much powder you have in each

case    :)

Thanks jack

i asked him to throw a few and weigh.

I also suggested that he throw 10  then weigh...

He hasn't got back to me yet......

I'll weigh the loaded cartridges that  have this morning.

Don't bother. The variations of all the components will make it impossible to determine with specificity what the powder drops are.  Stick with the original plan...weighing 10 drops is okay, but 20 is better.  He obviously has a measure issue so he should put the effort into finding out why.

The issue may not show in just 10 throws.

ty  yeti

i was thinking the same thing when i went to sleep last night

if case and bullet were off by 1/2 grain each

it could reflect as as 25% or more in powder weight

I didn't mean throw and weigh the  cartridge ...

I meant, throw a charge and then  dump the powder  into your scale and

weigh the powder charge ....

Or, throw three charges and weigh all three powder charges, together

(just the powder, not the entire cartridge).

That could do it alright.

You said you had "an uncomfortable amount of puff loads" - what % were puffs?

i had 2 out of my gun

he had 4

out of about 150 rounds

4% failure is pretty high

he continues shooting more,  he's a high volume shooter,   so the percentage dropped by the time we wrapped

If it's only 4%, you might need a larger sample than 15 to find a single PUFF.

Possible your reloader needs some lube, or a spring is wearing out.

Also likely that over time, the % will increase from 4% to 6 or 10%.
