Shotgun choke for round requiring both slug and bird shot?

Hey there,

So getting into 3 gun, got a decent enough set of guns, need to build out my belt. Looking at local matches I notice a bunch do slug and birdshot out of shotguns, some seemingly on the same round. I've primarily beens hooting modified for Trap for a while now, but have heard and seen how a slug will wreck a choke and mess up it's patterning.

So... just what the heck are people doing for stages that involve both birdshot and slug? Just shooting Cylinder the whole time?

Improved Cylinder should not be damaged by slugs and will give you a decent pattern with shot.

I only use cylinder or modified and shoot slugs through both with no problems

Really with modified?!? I've hard slugs mangle chokes like modified, and I've seen them pattern miserably after a slug goes through them. Have you checked how it patterns still?

Ive never heard that.  Only thing Ive heard is dont shoot slugs thru full choke.  Noone I know ever worries about it.

"It is not safe to shoot slugs through chokes tighter than those listed here."

I have been shooting bird shot and slug stages using light modified....Shred makes me wonder if I am damaging it.

IC and skeet will cover just about everything, tighten up to LM or MOD for longer shots or smaller plates. As long as you are shooting lead you won't hurt them (bird, buck or slugs). Check your gun specifically for best choke for best slug grouping

A lead slug shouldn't hurt a modified steel choke.  It might lead up some.
