Blueknight749
So after a lot of thought, I went crazy and invested in a Sig X-Five Match chambered in 40S&W. I've been shooting USPSA, Steel Challenge and 3-Gun. The only downside is that I've been shooting Federal 180gr HP (Duty Carry Stuff) and its pretty hot. I've learned to somewhat control it but I need to find another alternative. I purchased a box of the 180gr stuff from Atlanta Arms. Their load data claimed 950fps at a 170pf out of a Glock 22. It feels like my duty carry stuff is more manageable. I've heard the WWB 165gr stuff is softer "factory" ammo but it is a little up there in price. Thoughts? zzt
The WWB 165 does not make Major in my 5.1" barrel. It is spec'd at 1000fps, so if you have a slow barrel, as most Sigs have, you'll go Minor. It's good ammo. I wish they had made it go 1100fps.
RangerTrace
AAA 40 major is pretty darn soft. Load up some mags alternating two of each and I bet you'll notice a difference.
FortyOverUnder
AAA major ammo is some of the softest stuff I've ever shot. I've been trying to figure out their formula for a while. The closest I got is with WST, but even then AAA is still softer.
RangerTrace
A good source tells me they use N320 for their 40 major loads.....
Blueknight749
Thanks gents. I was at the local Academy the other day and I noticed a "new" box of ammo sitting on the shelf. It was Ten Ring 180gr 40S&W and the box was marked 900fps. It rang at the register for $21.99 so I picked it up and took it to the range. Boy, this stuff was soft! I need to chrono cuz I doubt it will touch 165pf.
FightFireJay
You might try the Winchester "Win3Gun" ammo. - Major PF - reverse draw cup, like a hollowpoint for accuracy - no exposed lead in base and non toxic primer - cleanest burning powder I have ever seen (in the 9mm version)!!! The brass looks cleaner on the inside after shooting than my brass does after tumbling!!!
Blueknight749
I had a friend load up some samples, Bullet weight/Powder weight in the the following 40S&W loads: 155/5.7 155/6.2 165/4.8 180/4.3 Overall. I enjoyed the 155/5.7 which had the least felt recoil.
Blueknight749
I forgot to mention that when I ran the loads in another shooter's STI Aperio, the 180/4.3 was the softest. Anyone know why?
