Wilfred
Anyone using W231 for .40 and would like to share a load recipe, just to get started. I'm planning to use: 180gr Bear creek or Berrys/SPP/Mixed brass. Any input is highly appreciated Thanks
Rob Tompkins
4.4 - 4.5 grains with lead moly coated Magnus bulltes gets you right to 170-172 PF in a 5" 1911. 5.0 grains with FMJ's out of G35 will get you to 170 PF. Both loads with Fed SPP and mixed brass. Recommed you back off by 10% and work your way up with you gun.
djthemac
I have been using w231 exclusively for my STI 5" Brass: Mixed Bullet: 180 grain Bear Creek Bullet FP Primer: CCI SPP Powder W231 4.7-4.8 grains COAL: 1.175-1.80 Crimp: .420 ish I really really need to get out to the range and chrono this load to see if I make major. Retread1911
I run a 180 with win 231 in 40 makes 170 pf consistently out of my p16. 180 gr lead flat point projectile 4.9 gr win 231 1.125 OAL WSP Range brass. If I remember correctly this makes 175-178 often at the chrono. I am planning to back it down a little this shooting season to see if I can help speed up my second shots. Start lower and chrono. I am new here and my brain hasn't acclimated yet. That was for my .45. However I still use 5.2 gr. of 231 for my 165 gr..40's. Sorry about the goof up. I need to pay more attention. Does it shoot flat? Hmmm. Honestly I am not sure how 'flat' it shoots. Not very is my guess. 90+% of all the shots in USPSA are under 50 yards and in those distances I hit point of aim. I am now fascinated by the question if you can wait until this cold snaps I will do some POA POI testing. ShooterSteve
Retread--don't read too much into that, some one is yanking your chain because you are running 178pf. I kind of wonder why also, but it's your gun and your game.

I kind of wonder why also, but it's your gun and your game. Absolutely my game. The question is does 8 Pf make the gun just a little harder to control? Sure does it make 1/10 a second difference over a course of fire? Maybe. I would like to drop the PF a little and see if things get easier. Just me. fuentesd99
I use 5.0 of W231 pushing a Rainier 180hp/fp out of my Glock 35 and she is at 169PF with an OAL at 1.135. If I remember correctly, to make minor I used 3.8 of W231 and everything else is the same.
mike's m&p
Wanted to get to range again and recrono my load, haven't had time do to all the snow. Should of said of also stated that my powder is at least 15 yrs old. That may be why my grns. are a little higher. As always you should start out lower and work your way up. I wouldn't give anyone wrong information on purpose. I was just stating what I'm using now
Solvability
I think Rob posted a rather optimistic load for 180 lead with W231 - I think you are not going to get Major reliably until you hit 4.8 gr and may need up to 5.0. Rob - better rerun the chrony on those.
ChuckS
My data from long ago showed 5.0 gr with a West Coast plated 180 at 1.151 OAL gave 166 PF in a P-16 with about 5K down the barrel. I switched to N320 after that and never went back, Good Luck, Chuck

Both guns delivered 170-171PF at 4.5gr w/ the 180 gr Moly lead. IT was a cool temp day so I will double check on a warm day. If the choro is off then I screwed no matter what.
