1911Prof
I am interested in building a new open gun and was wondering about the pros and cons of cone comps vs. bull barrell comps. I know that a cone comp provides less weight up front but are there any other issues to consider?
yoshidaex
I'm not sure myself. My first open had a bull barrel with a Ti comp The rest after that were all cone comped. Whichever one you choose does seem to change the CG of the gun.
gng4life
There are several dynamics involved in barrel/comp setup with the slide. Gary has some good info here: http://gansguns.com/facts.html Plus there are lots of debates on here like: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=157659&hl=++cone%20++bull#entry1762919 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=150841&hl=++cone%20++bull#entry1690929
Steve L
Cheely twisted barrel, its the best of both worlds.
818-DVC
Just bought a commander length twist fluted barrel and Matt's 4 port supercomp. Weight of a bushing barrel with wow factor! Has to be lighter than a cone comp too.
CocoBolo
I have two cone comp guns and a bull gun, all with Dawson DP-2 comps 9 major, and ugly twins to each other about same 10 oz slide weight etc. The cone comp guns weigh less and are faster on the swing, but that bull gun you can really shoot it faster it is easier to control. The other consideration: The cone comp gun will wear out faster (slide and cone) than the bull barrel gun, that is what the smith told me. There isn't any decernable difference in accuracy. When it comes to balance you can adjust that with a heavier or lighter guide rod.
1911Prof
I guess the difference for me actually lies in deciding to use a Schumann hybricomp bull barrel with holes in the rib and a bull type comp (possibly an Akai Shoto comp) or a regular barrel and cone comp with the popple holes drilled through the cone and barrel. 818-DVC
I think the holes are too big on the hybricomps or tribrids. I like the hybrid 4 hole with no holes. then you can drill out small poppels in the rib if you need them. I hear the shoto needs help with extra holes.. I'm running a fluted schuemann bull with a 4 port Ti Cheely comp on this next build, as my slide is light enough without the island cut for the rib. hybrid barrels are really nice though. I might do one on the 5" top end in the future.
Xdmeister
Bull barrels are a lot heavier and their comps are heavier as well so i would go with a more efficient cone comp.
