Chriznak
How much kinetic energy does a 55gr. 223 have coming out of an 11" barrel? Is it enough to knock down a competition steel target?
Bryan 45
define competition steel target. larue at 500 yards- no mgm auto popper at 50 yards- yes. Is an 11" barrel ideal for 3 gun- no. 3 Gun really requires a rifle. An 11" barrel is not a rifle. But, if your local matches are nearly all paper targets, it will work. blairmckenzie1
1000 lbs at the muzzle. a 9mm is around 1/3 of that at the muzzle. I dont think you would have a problem knocking over steel, although the owner of the steel might not be very happy with you for shooting it. google is your friend
HRider
There is a man that I know that runs a short (10.5 or 11.5") carbine at some of DT1's matches. He has an Elcan sight and can make hits out to 300yds with no problem. It will move an MGM flasher enough to call a hit on it at 300. jn_fsu
Not sure how much energy there is at point of impact but here is a couple of cool videos of a guy tagging steel at 600 and 773 yards out of a 10.5" barreled rifle. I think he was using 75gr though...

jn_fsu
cool vids! thanks. Thanks the rifle belongs to guy on sniperhide that's how I knew of the videos. He used PRZI match 75gr HBPT for the 600 yard target. The 773 yard target he states he used MK262 and XM856(Tracers) ammo. Barrel is LMT MRP (Mike Rock) 10.5" CL 1/7 5.56 w/ Battlecomp BAC 2.0 . Sleepswithdogs
Wow, that's cool. After watching the traces I knew the arch of the bullet, and when I looked closely at the following shots, I could then see the disturbed air and arch of the non--tracer bullets.
