BGolden
Is steel jacketed ammo allowed in the 3-gun nation invitation only matches?
Bryan 45
From 3GN Rules: 4. AMMUNITION 4.1 No tracer, incendiary, armor piercing, steel jacketed or steel/Tungsten core ammunition is allowed. A $100 fee shall be assessed for any competitor found in violation of rule (4.1) per each steel target engaged and or damaged. Fines will be made payable the day of the offense. nope. BGolden
Thank you, the only reason I asked is I noticed the head of competition was using it in Arizona and in Nevada, so I thought it was ok. I couldn't find it on their web site which is rather hard to get around in.
StealthyBlagga
Most 3-gun matches and ranges are OK with steel cartridge cases. The problem comes with steel containing projectiles. The ban is about avoiding target damage and fire danger. Check your ammo with a magnet... if the projectile attracts the magnet, it is probably illegal. At our range you will earn yourself a match DQ, but I can't comment on the 3GN rules.
boomfab
FWIW most all steel cased ammo (Wolf, etc) have bi-metal jackets. Copper washed steel jackets.
Dan Sierpina
FWIW most all steel cased ammo (Wolf, etc) have bi-metal jackets. Copper washed steel jackets. Other ammo also has bimetal bullets. I have some .308 reloads that are bimetal. I even found some RA54 30-06 ball, that a magnet sticks to.
Langenator
At LaRue they were using some sort of clipper (I think it was some sort of farrier's tool for trimming horses hooves) to check the HXP Greek .30-06. Magnets stuck, but no steel core. Just some steel as a component of the jacket alloy. I haven't read anything about us WWII shooters tearing up the steel targets. Quality steel like Larues and MGMs take bimetal jacketed rounds without damage. XM193 at 3200fps or a .22-250 at 3600fps will pock steel where a 55g bimetal bullet at 2900 or a 150g bimetal .30 cal at 2700 will not. But, some ranges choose to not distinguish between bimetal and steel core. If it sticks to a magnet... On the issue of potential to start a fire I cannot comment. Generally Kentucky is not dry enough to have to be concerned with starting a fire in the brush from just a spark on a bullet, but I can understand the concern for out west. SinistralRifleman
At the ACTS match here in Tucson we shoot at rifle steel regularly at ~40 yards to 100 yards. It's one of the few matches that let's shooters use bi-metal jacket ammo. There has been no degradation to the steel; it might actually wear on it less due to lower velocities of Wolf, Tula, etc. XM193 tends to punish steel A LOT worse. MGM put out an advisory years ago about XM193 for this reason, IIRC it may have even been banned from the match for a while.
