PKT1106
After searching this topic, decided to let the experts weigh in. I was told today that I could not perform a walkthrough with a magazine in my hand and using it to visualize the stage. I looked at the rule book at Section 8.7 for sight pictures and range inspection. I have used magazines to hold in my hand going through the walkthrough and today was the first time I was told I could not do it. I look at 8.7.2 and a magazine is definitely not a gun or gun replica, IMO. What says some of the ROs here?
ima45dv8
It is allowed. Whoever told you that needs to open the rulebook they received with their membership materials or download a copy from USPSA.org.
Chuck Anderson
You're fine in USPSA. It's a holdover from a previous rulebook. That rule no longer exists
Poppa Bear
You are safe as long as it is not a towel. USPSA is fine now, used to be a problem. 8.7.2 Competitors are prohibited from using any guns or gun replicas as sighting aids while conducting their inspection (“walkthrough”) of a course of fire. Violations will incur one procedural penalty per occurrence (also see Rule 10.5.1). IPSC is not. 8.7.4. Competitors are prohibited from using any sighting aid (e.g. the whole or part of an imitation or replica firearm, any part of a real firearm including any accessories thereof etc.), except for their own hands, while conducting their inspection ("walkthrough") of a course of fire. Violations will incur one procedural penalty per occurrence (also see Rule 10.5.1).

Skydiver
Early in the morning of match days, I've seen people setup stages and do walkthroughs with: A barcode reader would probably also be legal to do a walkthrough with: You may get funny looks from people if you do a walkthrough with one of these from Star Trek or Blade Runner, though: Is it a gun replica, or not?
