JCB Posted January 5, 2011 Share Posted January 5, 2011 I`ve startet loading 40 and came across a problem. Scratching up my brass. First I thought it was the EGW U-Die, then maybe the Dillon 1050... but now I'm leaning on brass... On the picture you can see my brass, its a one time shot Blazer Brass .40S&W fabric ammo. And the brass leaves brass fragments in the die... And it starts of light at the top and get worse and worse. If a GFL or Starline is pushed tru, it might be 100% okay... Blazer Brass is said to be reloadble... But not so sure. I have not used lub so far.... Anyone have experience with this problem. Its carbid die, but is it like lube is a must for some brass? gng4life Posted January 5, 2011 Share Posted January 5, 2011 Wow, nice pic! Unfortunately, the brass looks bad. I always use lube but it's not just for the brass, it's also easier on the arm. Even when I didn't use lube, I don't remember my brass ever looking like that. I have never loaded Blazer brass but my money is on that. I also use the U-die in my 550 and I reload 40, 9mm, 38SC, and 38Spl pretty regular. Just thinking out loud...it's probably a combination between the brass and the U-die. Have you tried a standard Dillon die? Do you have any One-Shot lube? G-man will probably answer up soon and he would probably be the best source... yoshidaex Posted January 5, 2011 Share Posted January 5, 2011 Use lube. Clean out the die that's shown and any other dies that are dirty and start again. Gabe Athouse Posted January 6, 2011 Share Posted January 6, 2011 Maybe see what alcohol and some Qtips will do for cleaning it up before replacing the die with a new one. I recently tried lube on my pistol brass, just to see if it was worth the extra step, and I won't load without it now. What a difference it makes. Even 1 or 2 pumps of the Dillon lube into the batch makes a noticable difference. I use half as much as I would for rifle brass and its worth the added step. JCB Posted January 6, 2011 Author Share Posted January 6, 2011 Yes, I got lube now Still, lube or not, should not be like that. Yes, I thought the EGW was the case... But it also happen with my Dillon. The ods for me having two bad dies from two differents brands is like 0.000000000000000000000000000000001% or less i think I used a dremmel with polish tip and a little polish material to clean out. After that it nice and shiny again. I have seperated all my brass. Dies are clean and going to try just Blazer with lube, then just GFL and other... But it kind of strange to me the whole thing. I have loaded much 9mm and some 40 on XL650 without problem and some 9mm on my new 1050. The Dillon die in the 1050 is the same one I used without problems in the XL650. I have also tried the die in three other presses, just so rule out the posebility of a bad toolhead or something on my 1050.
