Wanted
Sorry but I have one more dumb question. Can I remove the decapping pin from my Dillon sizing die,and resize primed cases?
yoshidaex
Yep. Though if the brass comes primed I would think its sized.
Wanted
There some stuff I loaded and need to tear down. I have several dozen and would like to save the primers.
BMartens
Just back out or remove the decapping stem and I always run everything through the sizing die, then you know what you have.
dillon
What caliber? If pistol, no problem-just remove the decap assembly and size away. If it is a bottleneck rifle caliber though, then you need to cut the end off of the decap pin so it doesn't deprime, and leave the decap assembly in place. The size die on a bottleneck rifle die over-resizes the case neck. Then the expander ball pulling back through the case neck on the upstroke opens the neck to a uniform inside diameter. the reason for this is to ensure sufficient case neck tension on the bullet regardless of the neck wall thickness, or inconsistancies therein. Wanted
Yeah it's 223. I didn't think about that part. Thanks for the help.
gohuskers
Ahhh, yes, interesting way to do it with a rifle cartridge.
Graham Smith
I don't know about Dillon dies in specific, but you may be able to back the mandrel up enough so that it doesn't remove the primer but the expander ball still passes through the case neck enough to do the job. Also, I think that the decapping pin can be removed on a Forster die.
benos
If you are loading boattailed bullets with 223 (or any rifle), you might try just removing the expander, like was recommended for pistol. In that case you will have more neck tension than if you resized with the "cut the decapping pin off" technique. But especially in an autoloader, the little extra neck tension will only be a good thing. be
