If you read the 3 types of reloads there are 2 actions that are listed first; dropping a magazine and drawing a magazine. Reloads don't begin until you 1) drop a magazine or 2) draw a magazine. I shoot SHO with my weak hand on my chest. What you do with your weak hand is your business as long as it's safe.

For zen there is another definition, the thought. For practice the definition is shot, beep, split time. For CoF and procedurals the drop/draw is what I plan to use.

For what it's worth, my interpretation of the rule is that according to IDPA the reload is initiated by dropping the original magazine from the gun and/or drawing the fresh magazine from its pouch. As long as neither of those actions have taken place before the shooter is behind cover no penalty is assessed.

Like others have said, freestyle is freestyle. If the shooter wants to shoot stronghand only with his support hand index finger up his nose he can- as long as he does it safely. :)
