shooting in AZ, do I need a range? Really!

Wifey and I driving east to Phoenix AZ for a few days, bringing along a 'Chief's Special .38' and maybe a cowboy gun just for plinking (and her eduction). We will be 15-20 miles west of the city. What ranges nearby? Do I need a range or any old berm do it?
