dirtypool40
howdy, trying to help a friend going to the police academy soon. He wants practice ammo, and I am willing to helpif all I have to do is shorten up my IPSC major load and dial back on the powder. Gun: Springfield XD 4" in .40 S&W Components: Zero 180 grain JHP VV N320 Winchester pprimers. I want to load down to around 1.130" oal and get a pf of around 140. thanks in advance
Singlestack
I found with a G35 and a 13# recoil spring that with 180's I could only go as low as ~150-155pf and get reliable ejection. I bumped from 150 to 155 because the brass was landing on my forearm. My minor pf load is 4.5g VN320 FSP @ 1.133 w/zero 180g fmj's. I don't own one, but I've played with a XD 4" .40 and they have a pretty stiff recoil recoil spring.....
the duck of death
Load for my G23 w/KKM barrel: 3.8 N320, Mt Gold 180CMJ, WSP, any case, OAL 1.
Fireant
singlestack, Are you sure about that 4.5 gr being about 155pf? My Major load is 4.5gr of N320 under a zero 180 JHP for a 168-169 out of my G22 with a KKM barrel, and the same OAL.
warpspeed
I tried 2 loads in my XD-40 4" using N320: 150 gr nosler w/ 4.2 gr - 874 fps avg 150 gr nosler w/ 5.0 gr - 950 fps avg OAL was 1.100 My guess w/ a 180 gr with 4.0 gr of N 320 would put you in the ballpark. I'm going to the range tomorrow, I load a couple and let you know.

It did the same with my stock Glock barrel. Good reason to be careful with someone else's recipe, huh? Voodoo
RIIID
DP, For what it's worth, I load 180 gr. Zero JHP at 3.6 of N318 at 1.150 for a PF of 140. Shot out of a 5" XD Tactical, N318 (use to be N3SL) is a tad bit faster than 320. Rich
Carlos
Rich - wow, I thought that " V V N-318" was a misprint until you mentioned N3SL which I have heard of. What country are you in & anyone have any idea if N318 is available in the US??
ErikW
Very curious. Look at all these supposed Vihtavuori powders that Vihtavuori doesn't list in their own data and their own burn rate chart. http://www.reloadammo.com/burnrate.htm N312, N318, N321, N324, N325, N331, and a bunch of N100-series rifle powders ... any chance these are OEM, non-cannister, or non-consumer powders? Merlin Orr
Erik The page you reference was created in 1997 if that matters. Whenever it was created this is the first I have heard about a lot (all) of the powders you listed. O the possibilities...
