O.A.L. for 9mm minor - 147 gr MG

I've loaded a few hundred 147 MG bullets over

3.6 gr WW231 (I know it's old - left over from

15 years ago, and I want to get rid of it) for

a power factor of about 130.

My first loads were OAL at 1.12" and they were

very accurate, but had occasional FTF - releasing

the slide would end up with the bullet nose down

a little on the feed ramp occasionally.

I've tried it out to 1.16" and that fed great, but

was less accurate? This possible?

I've had little time to try a few 1.14" and they

still feed well, but not sure (not enough testing

yet) if they're as accurate as the 1.12" OAL.

This is all in a Browning H-P with a fitted Barsto

barrel.

So, the 1.14 - 1.16" OAL all feed very well, but

not as accurate as when I load to 1.12", which doesn't

feed 100%? For accuracy testing, I've loaded all

RP headstamps, and I've been using the Wolf primers

(can't get WW anymore:((.

Anyone have any experience with OAL that's best for

the MG 147 grains for an accurate load?

Thanks,

Jack

You need to find the OAL that feeds well, and then adjust the powder charge if you want to find the accuracy node. The PF isn't going to be the same with the same charge at 1.120" as it is at 1.160". I suspect if you bump the charge to the same power factor that you had at 1.120", the accuracy will return.

The 147 is a long bullet and requires velocity to stabilize. Bumping the charge may help.

Hello: Load some to 1.150" OAL and up the charge 0.1 grains. Then check with a chrono. Thanks, Eric

Thanks, never thought of increasing the grains of WW231 and checking the chrono - thanks to both of

you for the advice - I'll try it next week and report back.
