IMO, this is the problem. No clear definition.
If you get popped you're gonna have to hire a lawyer to sort it all out. Or maybe not.
Not sure what a match letter will do for you if you travel through New York City, for example. I'm sure in other jurisdictions you might have an issue. A match letter does not trump the local laws. Be aware of the local laws.
I shoot with two guys that just got brand new STI DVC Open pistols a few months ago...Both had problems out of the box...One is working now (most of the time) the other one still has a ways to go.
When we run local matches we modify COF as necessary for a couple of shooters that are in wheel chairs. Remove shooting box and drop window barriers as needed. It's no big deal, no one is competing for a Corvette...
Do not go via New York...If something goes wrong with your flights and need to retrieve checked luggage (where I presume your pistol will be) you can get grabbed for possession of a firearm.
You better check on laws in other potential stop over points in the US.
