  1. Bronchitis.

Not much real dryfire the last couple of days, other than trigger control (up for a challenge? Keep a dime on the front sight while hacking your lungs out).

  2. Any ideas on how to solve this issue without turning away new or other non-member shooters?

    Simple. Pre-register. -rvb

Easiest way to do it. You could even give the members who help out with set up..etc,a few days early notice to register.

absolutely. you need ROs and setup-up crew and stats folks, etc to be on the list. Or if you have a dedicated group of folks committed to being there to work the match, just reduce the number of slots by that amount, so they always have room to be there.

  3. Any ideas on how to solve this issue without turning away new or other non-member shooters?

Simple. Pre-register. Accept the first XX registrations. Stat person can have the information entered prior to match day to save their post-match effort. It worked at clubs in VA and PA where I used to shoot. Speeds up registration, too... if information doesn't change, they dont have to fill anything out.

Requires a bit of extra effort (responding to emails, keeping track of who is signed up, etc. For the response, you could just send out a list a day or two prior saying "the following people are in...")

  4. I bet had you simply said "I'm new, my question is ..., would someone mind posting a link for me that better describes my question?" that this would have all been avoided....

GlockWise, if you have a pic you would like visible for technical discussion matters, start the thread, e-mail me the thread link and the pic. I'll put it on my Photobucket page and link it to your thread.

    just that easy! :)

and that is WHY this forum does, in fact, rock.

  5. I know the feeling, It's been 3.5 yrs, and I still get all warm and fuzzy about how nice it was to move back to America (after almost 10 yrs in Maryland). Welcome home. Congrats.

  6. Did get some dryfire in the last couple nights, about 45 minute each on speed drills/draws and a couple hours while watching movies on accuracy. Focused on finding a grip/trigger finger placement on the glock that gets me the best trigger press (w/o being too high my hand gets chewed by the slide). Also focussed on some different drills from SA, such as 3x3, 1x6, 2x2 etc.

Sat, I performed better on the accuracy work, but sucked at the speed drills. Sunday I sucked at accuracy, but rocked the speed drills. weird? related mentally?

My goal is the dime on the [factory] front sight a minimum 10x in a row, on demand. Saturday I could do 7-8 consistently (once I figured out my "target" was a couple feet lower than my eye, which made the gun angle down and the coin kept falling off the front. duh). Why 7-8? Mental? ie "almost there!"?? Last night I could do no more than 2 in a row. VERY frustrating. I really believe mechanically I was doing everything the same grip wise. My press must have sucked? Or visual attention sucked? It was weird because I knew before the shot broke whether it was going to fall or not. But I couldn't seem to salvage it. So SOMETHING was different/wrong on those shots that consciously I couldn't put my finger on.

    Speed shoot wise, some observations...

really missed the grip tape on the gun. can't wait for the trugrip to show up (link for my future reference: ericwesselman.com or trugripusa.com). The skate tape I have on hand just isn't adhesive enough.

reloads went smoother and results on the timer were better when I kept the gun lower. typically I've moved the gun up so that the mag well is roughly in-line w/ the target. If I just rotated the gun such that the sights stayed roughly inline w/ the target, it went smoother. Partly I think it's the alignment of the mag to the well, partly the press-out is smoother w/ less extra motion

hope I can arrange for a bit of live fire in the next couple of weeks. I want to order a 13 lb recoil spring and see if I like that.

RO school in 4 weeks. Heard it now has enough attendees to make it a GO! :) Thanks, Brent!

  7. As an Open shooter I don't agree with it, or to be more specific what I think is missing and maybe it's somewhere else in the rules but I can't find it. I think that if you are bumped you should not be eligible to receive a prize be it a plaque, money, etc.

Say a very high A classed limited shooter, gets bumped to open for an over length mag. Said shooter has classed in open just goofing off at a local special classifier match and has the required four. No matter how low they are s/he is going to be B classed. So now there is an A class shooter shooting against B class. That I see as unfair to the B Open people who are playing their game by the rules.

If you are bumped for a rules infraction I think you should also be scored as unclassified. You still get to see where you finish but you don't get to ruin somebody else's game.

Edit cuz I fat fingered my phone keyboard.

Good point, and I could agree with that. Not much of a penalty if you go home with a trophy or something off a prize table.

although.... they would most likely be competing w/ gear from another division, and if they came from PD would be shooting a minor game, so maybe enough penalty IS built in there? Unless people are carrying a spare open gun with them (when I shoot PD, I carry big mags 'just in case,' but that's it). And you could argue that it's not a "penalty" so much as a catch-all correction for not shooting with the division-appropriate gear. I guess I'll have to think about this one....

If an A shooter classed in B class in open wins B class w/ production or Lim or SS gear, is that a problem? I'm starting to change my mind.

  8. My perspective is that it's already bloomed....Cat out of the bag....Genie out of the bottle....

    Is it?

Perhaps my view is limited; I haven't been travelling/shooting as much the last couple years. Are magnet mag holders used commonly at all in production? I'm sure there's an example or two, but is it common?

If a tree falls and no one is around to hear it.......?

  9. There will be just as many, if not more, new shooters that have absolutely nothing done to their guns. Many of the newbs you are talking about are shooting box stock guns, mainly it's because it's their first, and they want to shoot it, and have no other place to do so...

Yes, an enthusiast will make mods, but a newb, well, they want their guns all nice and purty for a while....

Just to clarify my post, when I talk about new shooters, I'm not talking about folks brand new to guns, but new to our sport, which encompassed folks brand new to shooting as well as those who have been shooting and "into guns" enough to work on their gun. I suspect we see more of the later than the former show up to their first match.

I've seen it happen, especially in IDPA, when folks I've personally tried to get into the sport get turned off from the game because their gun gets bumped to the "racier" division because their grip is stippled, for instance, and they loose desire to return.

There is a ballance. Too modified, and pure stock are the extreme swings of the pendulum. MY opinion is where we are now is very nearly centered on what the division should be. I think BOTH the trigger pull restriction AND allowing magnetic mag holders pull the pendulum away from center.

    just this production shooter's 2c.

  10. Saying you are against the 3lb rule, then saying you are for the magnet ban is, well, hypocritical.

You want to keep Production as close to real world as possible? I'm ok with that as well, but then you must do away with all the mods

This statement is why I don't feel there is hypocrocy between the magnet and the trigger pull opinions. I really don't want to put it in "real world" perspective, so I'll put it in "new shooter" perspectives. PD is supposedly a division where new members can bring the gear they have. And this is why I support stippling and trigger work and sight changes.... because shooters who have NEVER been involved in shooting games will arrive to a match with gear with that kind of work done to their guns. We want them to be able to fit in PD, don't we? Box Stock? Even outside of the shooting sports that is a rare find among gun enthusists. And another thing that is a rare find for those new shooters we want to bring into the sport and into a production division..... magnets on their belt.

The only way to stop the gear race ...

We have a wide variety of guns being used, and even winning at the top level. The equipment race doesn't really exist, other than forum chatter. Box stock would create a serious race. Even if a division was limited to a single manufacturer, there were still be a single model that would be the de-facto standard. Currently, with the limited modifications allowed, a shooter can feel content and competitive with the gear of their choice.

  11. How does the use of magnetic magazine holders in ANY division comply with this:

5.2.4 During the course of fire, after the start signal, unless stipulated otherwise

in the stage procedure, spare ammunition, magazines and/or speed

loading devices shall be carried in retention devices attached to the

competitor's belt and specifically designed for that purpose. Unless

specifically prohibited in the Written Stage Briefing, a competitor may

also carry additional magazines or speed loading devices in apparel

pocket(s) and retrieve and use them without penalty, providing that the location of the apparel pocket does not violate the requirements of Appendix D, Item 12 (subject to the provisions of Rule 6.2.5.1).

[devil's advocate] They are IN the magnetic field! [/devil's advocate]

  12. I understand the idea that limiting rounds overall in mags might be more freestyle than requiring or allowing a requirement for a reload. However, requiring a reload as I have outlined does not eliminate any current equipment,

    Hi Jim,

I know you understand what I was saying about being more freestyle. You're idea isn't bad. The benefit, IMO, to going the extra mile and limiting mags/rounds in mags is it eliminates the equipment race. Just requiring a reload in a WSB doesn't keep me from needing the capacity in the next bay.

Such a rule might eliminate some mags from use, but it also precludes having to spend several hundred dollars on just a couple of mags to be competitive. Save that for OPEN, which is the division that should be driving that kind of innovation/capacity (which I don't believe the games lead to the innovation of the beta or surefire mags regardless).

    -rvb

  13. Is it more "freestyle" to dictate when to load, eg after 1st/before last shot?

Or is it more "freestyle" to dictate the equipment, eg how many rounds are in the mag or size of mag, then say go solve the shooting problem?

As an analogy, in production pistol, it would be like saying sure, use whatever mag you want, but you have to reload 3 times prior to the last shot... even limiting the rounds in only the starting mag has more appeal.

There is an enforcement issue (size of mag? ROs counting rounds, etc) that's not an easy problem to solve, but conceptually I like the idea of limiting rifle rounds. But that's me, and I enjoy production division for that very reason. Reloading adds a challenge, and opportunity to flub, and helps separate the level of shooters. But I'll point out even open pistol has a mag restriction.

I think currently there exists an open-style equipment race for rifle capacity (ie beta's and surefire mags) in the non-open division.

I haven't been an active 3-gunner for some time. I want to get back into it, and have put together a new AR for that reason. I know I can get back w/ my existing 30 rounders, but I also know at some point I'm going to need to invest in some surefire's or beta, and reloading practice is a low priority.

    -rvb

  14. I voted that making them illegal is ok with me.

I don't think "freestyle" is a valid arguement. Freestyle is execution given the equipment constraints available, not a justification for equipment rules. Otherwise, we should just drop all production rules, eg mag placement, 10-round limits, use of front pockets, etc.

How much of an advantage would a magnet be in typical matches in the US, in production division? In Lim or Open, sure, where you typically put one mag in the gun and one in the pouch/magnet. In production, you usually need to stow at least 2, often 3 mags. Are people using that many magnets? And wouldn't they have to be behind the hip bone, per 5.2.4? Is there really an advantage in production? I've never seen a magnet used by a production shooter. I'm wondering if it's a non issue?

I'd rather see empty-belt starts banned.:ph34r::ph34r: Not a fan. Poor way to make a stage harder, IMO.

  15. 45 minutes tonight. Did 5 drills from SAs book. Mostly variations of 6R6 drills, el prez, 2R2.

Wasnt getting anywhere close to my pars.... Was ending on the 'p' in beep instead of the 'b'. Pushed it a bit past my ability to see every shot, then slowed it back down, and was getting much closer.

Did some el prez's with the multi par set. 1.0 for the draw, 1.0 for the next 5, 1.5 for the reload, and 1.0 for the last 5. What I learned was that my draw was close to 1.0, but I was actually slow on the shots, often starting the reload a couple tents late, yet I was often ahead of the beep for the last 5 shots, so my reload was solidly under 1.5.

Interesting note, I have not had any problem the last couple of practices with hitting the plastic bit at the back of the maxwell, so I'm going to hold off for now in adding a grip plug.

This gun is slippery! I tried a piece of grip tape on the left panel, and it made a HUGE difference in my draw, and keeping my grip consistent (and I think it would keep the mag release from chewing up the WH. But I had to reposition the tape after every drill, and I had to take it off after a few strings.

I think I'll try some Trugrip for now. I'd like to stipple, but I'd also like to make sure the gun is for me before I go making it hard to sell.....

  16. There was discussion on this on a thread I started.

    Here's the link: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=137243&st=25&p=1544551&hl=glock%20duane%20thomas%20spring%2013&fromsearch=1entry1544551

    Hey guys,

I'm new to glocks. I've come to understood that w/ a light recoil spring like 13lb that a lighter striker spring should be used? what is recommended? Thinking of going 13lb recoil and down 1 lb on the striker?

    -rvb

    cool. good read. thanks! :)
