  1. The CMP is civilians marksmanship program and is open to the public. They don't require any membership. I want to be competitive with other ranges without drowning. I pay my RO's more than their match fee for helping me out. I have a #2 that I split with minus expenses. The other matches at the range are increasing but I will lose shooters to other ranges if I raise the price. My thoughts are this. Go from $15 to $20 for 1st gun and additional guns are $5 each OR stay at $15 for one gun,$10 for the second gun and $5 for the third. Would you guys shoot this match or travel 30 minutes to shoot $10 1st gun and $5 for second and third gun?
  2. Hey guys! I'm the Steel Challenge Director at the CMP range in Talladega. The range is a $25 million dollar facility and possibly the most technolocly advanced range in the country. Due to the money spent on this range it is hard to keep the match fees down to a compatible amount with the other ranges in our area. What do you guys charge or pay to shoot a 5 stage monthly match? Right now our match fee is $15 1st gun and $5 for additional guns. ( 3 guns max) The range has gone up on me and I'm trying not to have to increase shooter fee but I can't go backwards on holding a match at the same time. The range is very nice but steel challenge requires little maintenance with exception of some 2x4's ever so often. They have enough bays to keep the stages set up at all time and the range purchased the mgm grand deluxe steel package. Thanks for any input or advice
  3. ^^^^ that's good! I used s&h as just an example of transistions. Hitting the targets isn't a problem. I just feel like I'm losing all my time on transistions. I'm shooting a match tomorrow and my goal is 7anything. I'm gone dry fire about an hour before I head to the match to see if that will help. I am the match director and a squad leader so I have no time to do anything after I get to the range. ( including mental preparedness). Tomorrow I have 75 guns registered and 4 hours to complete the match before dark. Gonna have a lot of match stress which just makes my shooting a bit harder for me. Usually aggrevated already when I step into the box. Lol
  4. Hey guys, I've been shooting steel challenge matches for about 1 1/2 years. I practiced a lot in my back yard steel range before I ever shot my 1st match. My score on 5 stages on my 1st match was about 116. A year later "now" I'm shooting low 80's for 5 stages. I've got a goal of reaching mid 70's. My draw and 1st hit is pretty good from dry fire practice but I know my target transitions are slow. My best string even on smoke and hope has been a 2.48, and that was with a .8x draw and 1st hit. I can watch myself on videos and I simply transistion too slow. I'm 51 years old and I can't tell if I'm hesitant on taking the shot or my body just don't do what it use to. I always shoot better taking my time Over spray and pray but I really want that 7x score. Any tips on transitions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Tony
  5. I took a steel master and a match master to the range chroning some reloads. I loaded 5.2 grains of WAC and a 124 grain plates round nose bullet for the steel master. I loaded a starting point of 8.0 grains of HS-6 and a 124 grain played round nose for the match master. The light loads ran very well at 133 pf and the majors ran about 161 pf but was still pretty flat. For grins and giggles I tried the light loads in the match master and it cycled 100% and was actually softer than the steel master. I assumed the t2 trubor would rob velocity but was actually about 20 fps faster than the steel master. I believe I'm gonna like it better for steel than the steel master. Different results than expected.
  6. Located directly behind the Talladega Super Speedway. $25 million dollar facility catering to all aspects of shooting dicipines. thecmp.org
  7. I have an idea but not sure how to do a neat job. I'm thinking a hard box maybe 4 inches deep. Use 2 plys of foam. Leave the bottom uncut. Place the guns (3) on the top piece and sharpie around them. Cut the images out of the top piece. Just need something big enough with a lock and airline approved. Would like to throw my mags in as well. The Plano box is my reference but not big enough or cut for open guns. Thanks again
  8. Thanks! I don't know how I posted twice. Lol My trunk is completely full most of the time. Armorers box with spare parts. Ammo cans, brass containers, one bag with glasses, ear protection, timers and scoring pad. Another large bag with open guns in the original boxes and mags. Ar bag, long shotgun bag, log books etc....I keep a chrono on hand also. I'm about to do some travel and need to seriously need to consolidate. I guess we all have the same problem. Bigger vehicle perhaps. Lol
  9. How do you guys transport your open guns? My range bag will hold the pistols original foam cases but they take up to much room. There's got to be a better way. I usually carry 3 guns to a match and my trunk is full of boxes. Thanks for opinions. Tony P.
  10. My basement is covered in 4x4 stickers. I shoot steel challenge a lot so I will practice my draw and fire with a par timer. "You have to be honest with yourself and call you shots or you will be practicing for disappointment with live fire". Anyhow, I will draw for awile and then switch over to target transition for awile. When I started drawing and hit with live ammo I was running around 2.0 seconds. A year and a half later all of my draw and hits are sub 1.0 seconds with a best in competition of a .70. Dry fire! It works
  11. Seems to like Winchester whites and Remington's. Wouldn't cycle federals. Chronoed all and they were all very close. Loaded 5.2 of wac and runs, well, most of the time
  12. Wow! .38 super open at 172pf to a steelmaster. The steelmaster cycles on the ragged edge of 132 pf. It feels like a toy with the light and slow action but the shots are like shooting steel guided projectiles. It doesn't seem to miss. Hahaha Gonna take some adjustment after being use to the super. And DANG this thing seems so slow operating while shaving time off of the scores. I think I like it.?..? Verdict still out
  13. Hard enough to cycle while loading on the ragged edge of powder puffs. Lol Steel challenge loads at 132 pf through a steelmaster
  14. Same problem here. The grip had been relieved to a point that if you grip tight the mag wouldn't drop. Replaced with a extreme grip. Works perfect now
  15. Anyone see any point in replacing one in a steelmaster shooting 132 pf?
  16. Atlanta arms .38 super major pf with 8lb spring works great for me
  17. Apparently it's discontinued. Anyone have one they would part with?
