  1. You do not need gaseous oxygen in the case to fire. Gun powder has both fuel and oxidizer present in solid form. The fuel burns and the oxidizer reacts at ignition releasing gaseous oxygen for the fuel to consume. Primers also have a combination of fuel and oxidizer in a percussive sensitive form. There is no reason a gun should not fire in a vacuum. The ammunition will function fine. Your going to have more problems with your lubrication evaporating in the vacuum, if you use a light oil, than problems with the cartridges igniting. None-the-less most firearms should function just fine in a vacuum. mcb
  2. Thank you wlktheduk, Revolver truly has been fun. I still have a lot of fun with my bottom feeder but good old L-6 is something unique and quickly become my favorite. mcb
  3. So I started shooting revolver this spring and finally got my Classification with the June update. I was looking at the classifier pages after the July update and low and behold I am 15th on the C class Revolver shooters. COOL! Probably won't last long though I shot a 73% on last weeks classifier, 06-06 Golden Bullet Standards. I will at least be a big fish in a small pound until next month when I will probably be a small B-fish in the big B class pond. Rambling mcb
  4. www.rockinhtactail.com does not seem to be there anymore and the email for jerry @ rockinhtactail.com got bounced back. Thanks mcb
  5. I have an old Remington 870 with a poly-choke like the one on the left in the above picture. I suspect this would move me to open but I thought I would ask. So does this count as porting or a muzzle break? Unfortunately its an original poly-choke that is permanently fix to the barrel not one of the new poly-choke II's that screw into the choke tube threads. Why doesn't some one make a magazine extension for a Browning BPS? Thanks mcb
  6. Thanks guys! So I will probably back off the bull barrel and go with a standard barred. Are the chrome lined or stainless barrels worth the extra money? I have seen both A3 flattops and A4 flattops, whats the difference? Whats the dis/advantage of each? Thanks mcb
  7. So I have been shooting USPSA for almost a year and half and am thinking about getting an AR to try my hand at some three gun. Some of my shooting buddies have kindly let me borrow their equipment to shoot various side matches and I have really enjoyed it. The shotgun I can handle, I have one that will work for starts and I have been shooting shotgun since I was knee high... ...but AR are pretty foreign to me I have shot several of my friends and liked them all. If I had to choose though I shot the longer rifles better than the short carbines but what brand and all the option are still new and a bit overwhelming to me. The AR will be primarily for three gun but it will also probably get used for some varmint hunting and general fun shooting. I would like to keep my initial budget under $1000. I am certain I will put a lot more into it for optics and accessories and the like but for the basic rifle I would like to stay under the $1000 mark. From my limited exposure and shopping online here is what has caught my eye: Rock River's Varmint A4 with a 20 inch barrel. Questions: Is the 20 inch barrel to long? I have seen every thing from 14 inch (with wielded flash suppressor) to 24 inch barrels used at our local matches but what are the high level shooter using? Reasons? I like the idea of the flat top and weaver gas block so I can put iron site on it to start and later add optics as I figure out what I like. Are there other accessories that are key to making and AR a good three gun rifle? What do you guys think of Rock River Arms for the money? Feel free to recommend other companies and configuration. Just starting to research AR's I probably won't be buying until September but I need to learn a lot before that. Not to mention I have to finish the wife's kitchen or the first thing shot with my new AR would be me. Thank for any help you can give mcb
  8. Unfortunarely the XD-40 uses magazine that are internally the same width as a 9mm magazine so in the 140mm length you will probably never get more than 16 rounds in a magazine. If your just shooting Limited for fun it would be fine but competing against 19+ round magazine most Limited guns have would be tough. mcb
  9. I am shooting an XD-40 Tactical and have been running an 16lbs spring in mine with good success. The stock spring is 18lbs so its only slightly lighter. I have not had any feed failure related to the spring. That said I don't know what spring they are using in the XD-45ACP. I would bet you could go a little lighter but I am not sure how much. mcb
  10. Don't take the following direct at you tightloop I have seen this reason said by many other shooters but the reason still sort of burn my biscuits. I shoot an L-10 wide body gun. I like my grip mods, magazine well, extend magazine release and custom basepads all of which would have to go away if I shoot production. I also like to reload; using four maybe even five magazines (if it makes sense) on a 32 round stage. I like L-10, the rules fit the way I like to shoot. JMHO mcb
  11. I did not realize this either but it explains why there is only one GM and not a small handfull of them in the revolver division. Why do they do this? It seems simple enough to do it the right way like the other division. Learning new things daily mcb
  12. If revolver and L-10 go away then I would, with much unhappiness, probably stop shooting USPSA. L-10 was the first division I shot because it fit the equipment I had. I then bought the equipment I wanted to shoot Revolver because it appealed to me the most of all the other divisions. If those two divisions go away then where would I go? How do we let the PTB know that we want Revovler to stick around? mcb
  13. Its pretty clear that club to club, person to person certain division are favored and other are less so and the favored division differs club to club, person to person. But what is wrong with this? Does six divisions dilute competition? If dilution is not the problem how does SS, L-10, and Revolver (the three division I see most often thrown on the chopping block) detract from the sport? I have read many threads talking about getting rid of one division or another but I think I have missed the reason why. I previously missed on the divisions all having the same number of shooter, so I might just be being thick but... Is the goal to have the most competitive arrangement of divisions? Then a single division would seem the best way to do that. No sandbagging hiding in smaller division possible. Is the goal to get more involvement and grow the size of the sport? Then it would seem more divisions would be better giving each shooter a division the easily fits the equipment he has/wants to shoot. My guess it that the real goal is to hit a happy medium and thus the contention here. rambling mcb
  14. I hate the talk about getting rid of L-10. I shoot an XD-40 I have put a lot of work into it to make it a dedicated L-10 gun. If L-10 goes away I'm stuck. The XD-40 can't be competitive in Limited due to the fact that it's magazine are really 9mm width. You will never get more than 16 rounds in a 140mm magazine using and XD-40 magazine tube. I don't want to go to production I have lots of time and energy into the fabrication of my own custom magazine well and extra thick base pads for my XD. Part of the fun of L-10 is I can tweaking my XD a lot more than I can in Production. Not to mention I like reloading on the clock, the Limited and more so the Open shooters get short change with their big magazines. Reloading is fun! So if you L-10 haters get your way and L-10 goes away then I will be forced to just shoot revolver all the time. Woe unto you if I ever got as good as Jerry and beat you with my revolver you Limited/Open snobs. Just poking fun don't take that too serious but I would be bummed if L-10 went away. mcb Dang, the light bulb just went on never mind my complete brain fart. mcb
  15. Your say that there is exacly 14473 in each class??? I can't believe that at all. There is something funky here or I'm not reading that chart correctly. mcb
  16. If your using the number on USPSA's website there is something funky going on with them. From the: USPSA Class Distribution as of page Number of Shooters In each Class Class Open Limited Ltd 10 Production Revolver GM 113 109 17 21 1 M 459 407 137 88 26 A 698 757 393 244 64 B 1469 2003 942 590 175 C 1550 2912 2060 1269 418 D 459 1221 1062 738 195 U 9725 7064 9862 11523 13594 Total 14473 14473 14473 14473 14473 The format is not all that great but look at the total at the bottom. I pasted the numbers into Excel and summed them to see which division had the most shooters and wow. The all total to the same amount??? What is going on? mcb
  17. Come up here to North East Ohio Flyin40. We have had 10+ single stack shooter each time at Crooked Creek for our first three matches this year. I think SS will make it if they get it out of the goofy testing period and give it real classifier score and the such. SS is a lot bigger than Revolver and open at most of our matches. I am usuallyone of two revovler shooters at our matches. If we have three revovler shooters I start feeling crowded. :-D mcb
  18. I am presently using N320 in short 40 shooting major. I have used Berry's but am presently using Montana Gold. My load: Montana Gold 180 grains CMJ 4.95grains N320 Federal Match Primer Fed, Win, R-P brass OAL 1.135 Crimp 0.420 This loads chronographs at 172 PF out of my XD-40 Tactical (5 inch barrel). My guess is that will Berry's you would probably get a little bit faster with the same load. Hope that helps mcb
  19. I have been using a pair of baseball cleat from Adidas. The Baseball cleats have wide cleats that go around the perimeter of the tread. This give great side to side traction and they also seem to work better on wet plywood props that most football cleats. mcb
  20. Area 7 was my first match that was not a club match. I was very impressed with the stages and really enjoyed the match as a whole. I shot the match Friday. I really like stages 4 and 8. Stage 4's soft cover was the first time I had ever shot soft covered targets and I had never shot a drop turner until stage 10. Wouldn't you know it was my turn to shoot first on that stage. I was wondering how awards are handled. I shot very good given my skill level and manage to shoot high C class shooter in L-10 and was wondering how any post match stuff is handled. I really had a good time and it would be cool to have something showing how well I did at my first big match. I also hope to see something written up in Front site. I have read about many area size matches since I joined USPSA a bit over a year ago. I will be cool to read an article written about a match I got to shoot. Anyway it was a great match and I look forward to shooting a few more big matches this summer. Thanks mcb
  21. Wow this thread made me feel good. I picked up a S&W 610 no dashes on the model number. 6.5 inch barrel fluted cylinder, fixed firing pin, last September for only $520. It was in very nice condition with on a little bit of finish scuffs/holster wear. It has been a great shooter and I have had a lot of fun in the revolver division with it. Did not realize they were suddenly going for so much. mcb
  22. stingerjg, I like the idea of requiring point shooting without use of sights but I wasn't sure how to right that into the stage in a safe way. I would like to do one on the bath tub scene from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly just before Tuco says: http://www.wavlist.com/movies/193/tgbu-donttalk.wav Probably more appropriate for a SASS match rather than USPSA. Last Man Standing would be a good movie the opening scene jumps to mind but dual wielding 1911's in shoulder rigs is a no-no by the rules. Might have to watch that one again for other inspiration. mcb
  23. So I was watching Indiana Jones, Raider of the Lost Ark Saturday evening and then we had a very short 6 round stage this morning at a local match that I liked and I was inspired to create the following stage. I'm sure a 1 round stage breaks some guidelines but I could not find a specific rule in the rule book. Obviously since its a one round stage everyone probably already guess that it is inspire by the scenes where Indy shoots the swordsman. None the less here we go: http://my.stratos.net/~thedump/practical/indiana.gif So what do you think? Just for fun. mcb
