  1. First the CW9 is not on the list but its basically a P9 (that is on the list) with some economic short cuts so do you think it will be added to the production list? Second Pro-mag makes a 10rd magazine that will work with the Kahr 9mm handgun but the largest magazine Kahr sells for the CW9 and its other 9mm handguns is an 8rd magazine. Would it be legal to use the Pro-mag 10rd magazine in production or would you be limited to the factor eight round magazines or even worse the 7rd flush fitting magazine since that is what the factory ships with the CW9? I am seriously considering a Kahr CW9 as my new CCW and I will probably shoot some local club matches with it in production just to get it broke in and get familiar with the gun. I don't expect to be real competitive with it but being stuck with the 7rd flush fitting magazines would make production really tough and if it was allowed I would pick up the 10 round Pro-mag magazine. I could always just shoot L-10 with it and use the 10rd Pro-mags. curiously rambling mcb
  2. It was close between us on most of the stages although I crashed and burned on stage seven when I completely flubbed a reload. Stage four also gave me grief. I really need to practice more weak hand shooting, especially with my revolver. mcb
  3. You will get 22-23 round of 9mm with Novak's 140mm Magazine extension. You will only get 15-16 round of 40S&W with that same magazine extension. As I said due to the XD-40 using 9mm width magazine tubes for 40S&W you will probably never get more that 16 rounds in a 140mm length XD-40 magazines. The magazine are simply to narrow. I think we will see a viable XD-9 9mm Major Open gun before we see a viable XD-40 Limited gun. Now if someone makes a 40S&W/10mm slide for the new XD-45ACP frame then we'll see a sweet XD Limited gun. rambling mcb
  4. I agree the 5 inch is probably a better choice for competition but you can get a one piece guide rod and a variety of springs for either the 4 or 5 inch version. I would suggest going and renting both caliber in both length and get the one you like best. At present neither the XD-40 or XD-45ACP will every by competitive in Limited, strictly a production and Limited-10 gun. The XD-40 suffers from the 40S&W-in-a-9mm frame problem and thus uses 9mm width magazines so magazine capacity will never be what a 40S&W should be. That said I have been shooting my XD-40 Tactical in Limited-10 and it has treated me very well. If you do decide on an XD-40 get one made after June of this year. All of the newer XD's are coming with a melonite finish on the slide. This finish is similar to the tennifer finish Glocks have. The older XD's did not have a good finish and were notorious for rusting. I would also suggest checking out http://www.xdtalk.com there is a lot of good information on SA XD's over there. I'm sure they would have a lot of good additional information to help you on your choice. Hope that helps mcb
  5. I thought it was an excellently run match. The ROs running the stages did an excellent job and we got lots of trigger time with little wait time. The stages were very well built and a lot of fun. Just needed a few more revolver shooters to have shown up. Its sad when you take second and DFL at the same time. mcb
  6. Email sent. If L-10 goes away it will be some of us will have to go back to Production after taking all the cool gadgets off our guns. There is a group of guns that suffer from the 40S&W-in-a-9mm handgun problem that can't go to Single Stack can't be competitive in Limited and get to shoot minor in Production after restoring the gun to factory configuration. If L-10 goes away I will probably just shoot revolver rather than go to Production with my XD-40. mcb
  7. So who do I sent the email too? If L-10 goes away I will be very sad. mcb
  8. The reason the XD-40 (and Beretta 96 for that matter) only gets 12 rounds in the magazine where most other 40S&W pistols get 14-15 is they are both built on built on frames that were originally made for 9mm handguns. Because of this fact the grips internal dimensions are not wide enough to support a proper width 40 magazine. The XD-40 uses magazines that are essentially 9mm magazine tubes with 40S&W width feed lips. This results in a magazine that is not a true double stack. The top half of the picture show a true double stack of 40S&W diameter cartridges in a proper 40S&W width magazine. The bottom half of the picture is what you get when you stuff 40S&W cartridges into a magazine that is the proper width for 9mm double stack, ie what SA has done with the XD-40. As you can see you have a magazine that is not a true double stack and thus is not very efficient at storing cartridges. IMHO the XD-40 will never be a competitive Limited gun as you will never get more than 16 cartridges within the 140mm length constraint of the Limited Division. I have made several prototypes playing around and have two very reliable 15 round XD-40 magazines. They insert with the slide close and run as well as any of the other factory magazine I have. I think if I made my own follower and stretch them out to 141.5mm (legal USPSA length???) I might get 16 rounds but it would be tight getting it to also be loadable on a close slide. http://my.stratos.net/~thedump/xd/basepad.html As a result I have basic decide to stay in L-10 with my XD-40 and have many magazines with extra thick base pads to go with my home made magazine well. http://my.stratos.net/63/A2/thedump/xd/l10...ited-10_rig.jpg I would love to see a 40S&W/10mm slide for the XD-45ACP frame. Then the XD line of pistol would really stand a good chance at being a real Limited pistol. As it stand the XD-40 is relegated to Production and L-10. Rambling mcb
  9. Thanks for all the help guys. I order a three 30 and two 20 round USGI magazine from 44mag.com. I got the gray Teflon coated with genII Magpul followers and some ranger base-pads. I also order one older straight 20rd just because I think the old straight style 20rd magazines look a lot nicer in the gun. I let you guys know how the work when they and my AR finally get arrives. This waiting it going to drive me nuts. Thanks again for all the help mcb
  10. I bought 5 of the stainless CProducts mags. Like Patrick said, my DPMS just must not like them. It never missed a beat till I tried those mags out. I stopped using them and went back to the aluminum mags and the problem went away. Along these lines: Steel or Aluminum? It seem most like aluminum but I might be wrong Again, thanks for all the great responses mcb
  11. Wow lots of responses quick. Thanks a bunch guys! mcb
  12. I have my AR-15 on order from RRA. I am looking for some magazine to go with my new AR and have been a bit overwhelm with the number of magazine options. I did a search on the internet and most magazine FAQ date back to 1999 and even the most recent thread I could find here data back to last year. So I would love to here your recommendation for reliable AR-15 magazines and good places to buy them from. I initially want to start out with a few 20's and a couple 30's. I might add a 40 or 45 later. Since this is my first AR feel free to also recommend the essential AR accessories you need to shoot and care for an AR if you like. Thanks mcb

  14. We always have a bunch of Single Stack shooter at our local matches. We usually have 40-60 guns sign up at each match and SS have nearly 10 SS shooters at most matches. L-10 does about the same. Limited and production are usually are most populate. Open is only slightly ahead of the 2-3 real shooters (revolver ) that show up. At least at our club L-10 and SS do pretty good. mcb
  15. Success! http://my.stratos.net/~thedump/practical/mcb_pot.mp4 So we set the pot out target up at practice tonight and had a lot of fun with it. We reset the target 40-50 times this evening and only one malfunction near the end. I pretty sure that the bearings and dash pot needed some more grease, both were a little dry. I also need to tweak the activator mechanism to assist in resetting the target more easily None the less it seems to be very do able. In the video clip above I drew, hit the steel activator, two shots on the right stationary target and then two on the moving target. I managed an alpha charlie on the stationary and two alpha on moving on that run. Some of the other guys were just able to shoot both of the station targets between the activator and the mover. I think that newer shooter will be able to shoot the activator and then the target without too much problem. Shoot through did happen a few times but not very often and it was pretty easy to tell when it did happen. None-the-less when we use it in a match we will probably use hard cover and definitely going to put a railroad tie in front of the delicate parts to keep some newb from putting a large caliber hole in the linear bearings. Thanks again for all the input and hopefully I can tweak a few minor bugs and we'll use it for Octobers match. So if you in the area second Sunday of the month stop by. mcb
  16. Jim are you refuring to my video clips? They are in mp4 format and probably best veiw using Quicktime from Apple. Make sure you have a fairly recent version of the free Quicktime plug in installed in you browser. mcb
  17. Crooked Creek Conservation club ( http://www.practicalpistol.net/ ). We are going to try it out a practice tonight (weather permitting) but I am not sure if it will make it into this coming weekends match. That will depend on if the stages have already been picked out and what the rest of the guys think of it in action. I definitely hope we can work it into Octobers match if we don't get it into this month match. Flex I also worry a little bit about the shoot throughs. The club has several IPSC metric target shaped steel plates might just use one of those and then we would have true impenetrable no-shoot. hmmm... are you allow to make a piece of steel a no-shoot penalty target? or would it simply be hard cover? Thanks for all the input guys I will let you now how it goes this evening. mcb
  18. http://my.stratos.net/~thedump/practical/p...arget_dash3.mp4 Alright guys I added a dash-pot to the target (the white PVC pile and dowel seen at the base) and I think it's much better. It comes out slower and then return fast. The first verison took about 26 frames for a full cycle the newer version is about 26 frames to come out and about 16 frames to return. I think this is a much smoother moving target. What do you guys think? mcb
  19. Tried that and it works but adding enough much mass makes the moving target really hard on the stops at both ends. I have added a home made dash pot and that helped. I still need to tweak the dash pot to get a little more resistance but I think it might work and save the stops at each end of the stroke. Thanks mcb
  20. Thanks for all the feed back guys! I am going to take it to practice Wednesday and give it a try. I agree it might be a bit fast and in its present state it will have to be a close target. I might try replaceing one of the two springs with one of those air cylinders that opens a hatch back on a car. That way I can have a quickout slow back or slow out quick back target that might be more shootable. I will try to post some video of me trying to shoot this thing if I can. Thanks mcb
  21. I got into USPSA because I wanted a shooting sport where reloads were part of the competition. Who gets to reload more often than the wheel gunners? :-D mcb
  22. I have had this idea for a pop out IPSC target for a few weeks and finally got the time to build it today. The idea started when I had a linear bearing set from a cabinet pullout left over from a cabinet I tore apart to make the dishwasher cabinet when remodeling my kitchen. So with the salvaged bearing, a few long screen door springs and some odds and ends from junk box in my shop I started my construction. Well after a few hour of working and several metal splinters I have success. It's a pop out IPSC target. The front target is a no-shoot and when activated (most likely by a separate falling steel target) the shoot target pops out to the right side of the no-shoot and then quick back behind the no shoot. It ended up being a little bit faster than I thought it was going to be. Here a video clip to see yourself. http://my.stratos.net/~thedump/practical/pop_out_target.mp4 I counted frames and from the start of motion to the end of motion and it take nearly a second (26 frames running at 30frames/second) to go all the out and back. Its that too fast? Could you shoot 2-alpha on this target or do I have to figure out how to slow it down a touch? Thanks mcb
  23. http://www.m1911.org/loader.swf Here the STI version if you like. mcb
  24. So at practice last night I was seeing if using N340 would help my accuracy problems over titegroup when pushing a Berry's Round Nose 180 bullets. It did help a little and got rid of the really nasty fliers but not as much as I had hoped. The N340 seems to cause less plating peeling. One of the guys at practice gave me a handful of his long loaded 40 to try and that made a huge difference. I went from 5 inch groups at 20 yards to 2 inch groups without trying real hard. But now two thinks change. First the OAL went from 1.140 to 1.20 and second I went from my load with 180 Berry's to his load with 180 Montana Gold. So was it the OAL or the better quality bullet that made the difference? Probably a little of both. I like the Berry's because it was the only round nose 40 I could find but the accuracy is really starting to kill me. I would almost take the slower to reload Montana Golds if it gets my groups tighter. So what bullet and OAL are you shooting in your 610? Thanks mcb
  25. Western PA sectionals are at the very end of September and Ohio Sectionals are the first full weekend in October. I have been shooting revolver since this spring, just go my B card and want to shoot Revolver in at least one semi-big match this year. I shot Area 7 and Easter Lake Sectional in L-10. That said I don't want to be the only guy shooting revolver either. I like to see my scores up against a bunch of other shooters even if I get schooled. So how many of you revolver shooter are going to these matches? mcb
