  1. I'm a machinist and understand tooling marks but on a custom gun that cost that much money it's not acceptable. I'm glad the builder is going to make it right and hopefully the person that pushed it through and out the door like that will be looking for a new job.
  2. I don't care if my gun is the prettiest as long as she puts out lol
  3. I just bought an older Tripp Research open gun a few months ago. The first thing I wanted to do was update it. But with all the great advise I received on this forum, I'm going to leave it alone for now and shoot the hell out of it. I might put in an aftec extractor and nothing else. My deal wasn't anywhere near as good as yours but for the state I live in and how hard these guns are to find here, I had to jump on it. I'm in the same boat as you with not knowing who built it or exact round count. Everything looks good on it and she's still tight so I'm going to run it till it begs to be prettied up.
  4. I'm planning on putting one of these triggers on my Springfield range officer 9mm. Hopefully there won't be to much fitting required.
  5. That's what I was thinking, so I bought seven brand new Tripp Cobra 10-round 9mm magazines from Dawson. They won't drop free from the gun, have to be pulled out. I wrote to Tripp about the problem over a month ago and have not received a reply. So, I'm back to using the Dawson magazines. Anybody interested in seven like-new Tripp Cobras? Chris If they are free they are for me lol
  6. What grips are those? I'm guessing you just put grip tape over a set of grips.
  7. I used everything except the mainspring housing and the ILS parts. So basically the spring and 2 metal parts that connects to the spring. Sorry can't think of what they are called at the moment. I even reused the spring pin from the original mainspring housing. Haven't had a problem with cci, winchester or remington primers in 3,000 round since I put the new mainspring and magwell on.
  8. Rack&Roll I have a SA 9mm range officer and i replaced the ils main spring housing with a Dawson no gap magwell and msh add I used the factory spring and I haven't had a problem. I want to switch to a 17lb main spring and a 9 or 10 pound recoil spring as you did so I an definitely interested in seeing how this turns out. If you end up not wanting the springs shoot me a PM.
  9. I an going to look into the blue bullets and maybe order a few hundred to give them a try. Same thing with the bayou bullets. I think the only fair thing to do is to also order some montana golds as well and try all 3 and see which one works the best and give the best accuracy.
  10. Ok I must go buy a 10/22 now. That looks awesome. Nice work.
  11. Very nice. I happen to be a machinist myself. I run cnc Swiss lathes. The company I work for does a lot of work in the firearms industry. I make parts for Sig, FN and Beretta to name a few.
  12. FowlShot I an current using a cmore serendipity on my open gun and I used to have a slide ride on my open Ruger 22/45.
  13. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=207522#entry2309134 If you read through that thread you will see a choir guys using coated lead at major power factors.
  14. Thanks that's a good starting point as there recommended max is 6.9 which in there gun gave the 1,275 feet per second which is a 158 power factor. If I did the math correctly. But that is for a 124 fmj-fp. I hear coated lead shoot a little faster. I'm going to start at 6.6 and work up to see what my comp likes.
  15. Dot size choice really comes down to personal preference and distance you think your going to be shooting at the most. Right now I only shoot steel challenge and walls of steel. So I prefer a bigger dot because everything is close so I run a 12 moa dot. But I'm am going to get into uspsa this coming year so I will be experimenting with smaller dot modules to see what works best for me. As for glass size I have shot both the cmore and the RMR and I prefer the cmore for competition. But once again it's personal preference.
  16. Did you make it yourself or modify an existing thumb rest?
  17. Thanks Heinz, To be in the safe side I will start around 6 to 6.5 grains and work my way up. I guess it's time for me to invest in a chronograph instead of borrowing a friend's. I'd like to find a good used one but the go so fast in the classifieds.
  18. I'm new to shooting open and just bought my first 38 super. I'm am going to give bayou bullets a try to make major. Did anyone have a good load recipe or a good starting point using VV N350?
  19. Thanks for all the help and advise. I'll going to order 500 38 super bullets from Donnie and give them a try. I have an unused bottle of Dillon case lube living around from when I ordered my 550. My next question is, fires anyone have a good starting point for VV N350 with coated bullets to make major? I know it takes less powder then a jacketed bullet but I'm just looking for a good starting point.
  20. I run 124 grain xtreme or 124 bayou bullets in my 9mm range officer. I use 3.9 gains of VV N320 with cci primers. Very little recoil and very accurate. I get groups if 1" at 25 yards if I do my part. I honestly haven't tried any other grain bullets so i can't comment. I am however going to put a lighter recoil spring in as I have noticed a slight nose dip. I have the factory spring in now but I am going to try a 8, 9 and 10 pound recoil spring with a full length guide rod to see if I can get rid of the slight dip in the nose.
  21. I'm always looking to get mo-betta. I see a lot of guys using 115 or 124 so I was thinking about buying a few hundred of both and see which one I like at a little over power factor I've also been thinking of getting my gun NIB-X coated after I put on a new comp. Maybe that coating on the inside of the comp with a little lube would help out with the leading too.
  22. My experience may be completely unique, but this is just not true for me.I have never bought 9mm brass and I have bought every piece of 38 brass I've ever shot. The difference is in the sheer number of 9mm shooters (major, minor and factory) vs the number of 38 shooters, furthermore the percentage of 9mm shooters interested in their brass vs every 38 shooter I've ever seen scrounging for all their brass. The way my squad works: while everyone is taping and resetting steel, one shooter is picking up all the brass, at the end of the day everyone who wants some takes a split of the brass. The 9mm shooters always come away with more than they shot. As far as buying brass I completely understand never having to buy a single piece of 9 brass and on the flip side having to buy 38 super brass because of the cost factored in, you don't find a whole hell of a lot of it on the range. My theory is eventually everyone picks up brass weather is be 9 to replenish their stock or 38 super because of cost. But if the 9 guys are running 9's because the cost of the brass is a deal breaker that's completely understandable. Hell I'm still on the fence about having a new 9 top end built for my 38 super to see which one I prefer to shoot. Not for cost reasons but to see which one feels better and works better for me. If I find I like the recoil impulse of a 38 super over a 9 I will more then likely stick with the 38.
  23. Dan if you don't mind me asking what power factor are you shooting at? And what grain bullet are you using?
  24. I currently shoot bayou bullets in my Springfield range officer chambered in 9mm. I recently bought a 38 super open gun and was wondering if it would be a more cost effective round to shoot as I see most people shooting montana gold which is double the price. Will the coating peel off at major power factor and gum up the barrel? Does anyone shoot these at mpf in an open gun with good results?
  25. I'm a noob to open as well and just bought my first open gun which is chambered in 38 super. The way I see it is eventually you will be picking up brass weather it's for 9 or 38 super. If you shoot 9 major and you leave your brass on the range after a stage, eventually your brass stash will dwindle and you will need to pick up some brass to replenish. If you shoot 38 super you will want to pick up your brass after you shoot the stage. It just comes down to when you will be picking up brass, because no one has a never ending supply of 9 or 38. As for cost of new or one fired 38 I just look at it as you have to pay to play. I honestly would have wanted to buy a 9 major gun but in the state of Massachusetts my options were limited. Open guns don't hit the market very often locally so when a used one with 5 mags came up for sale locally I couldn't afford to be picky about calibers. Just my opinion on the matter.
