  1. I have a number of differnet loads I like. The 125gr TNT doing 3000fps is extremely cool. Light recoil and accurate. I use this round without hessitation out to 400. Only draw back is that you need to use commercial brass to fit in enough powder and will start finding cracked casses after 2 reloads. Thus, this load is not recommended for M1A's. Sierra Match King 135's doing 2900fps are my overall favorites. Light recoil, fast, flat and extremely accurate. You can use use commercial or Nato brass (although I recommend sorting your brass). Only draw back is cost, so I try to save this ammo for RM3G. For general purpose shooting and practice, I have had good luck with Hornady 150gr FMJ doing 2700fps. Cost effective and fairly accurate. Sierra Match King 155gr doing 2650fps is a winner and very popular. Laser beam accurate as far as you can hope to shoot a 308 semi auto. The SMK 155 might be the most versatile 308 bullet out there. An honorable mention is the Nosler 155gr Custom Competition. I've not run a ton of them, but they seemed to shoot well and are cost effective. I run IMR XBR8208 almost exclusively in 308. Just my own observation, but 8208 and H4895 have just about the perfect burn rate for 16"-20" semi auto 308's. Both powders meter well, burn clean, efficient and very consistent.

Great information here, sir. I'm about to start reloading in a few months while I slowly build up my equipment. Thank you for the head start on 308 concepts.

  2. The 25 round mags worked great for Monopodding.

And the Trijicon MRO worked even better.

Both of these combined with a great Glock 41 pistol from MOD 1 and some luck netted a Heavy Metal Division win for me at Blue Ridge Mountain this past weekend. It was fun getting back to shooting the big guns.

Congratulations!! That's what I like to see.

  3. Nice pairs. Very nice. I feel like a complete "rifle loser" now, but at least I have something to which I can aspire. Good technique tips for any 3-gun rifle work, in my opinion.

Watching Heavy Metal 3-gun was what got me interested in all of this. Why I never started with that division, I really can't remember now. Maybe the pump shotgun was a turn off at the time? It has a certain old school appeal these days. Oh well.

The video is appreciated very much. Thanks!

  4. 6.5 ain't heavy (not by the rules anyway)

Right, the plan would be to use the same LR-308 pattern lower from my precision gas gun and put on a 308 upper. Probably an 18" rifle gas upper for that.

Seems like once you make the investment in the JP bolt, JP LMOS carrier and a good trigger in the lower, you're most of the way to a fair Heavy Metal rifle....just short the upper assembly.

  5. I remember that bent sight. Superstition. However, Daniel Boone was able to hunt and eat with sights not unlike current iron sights using whatever his variation of Kentucky windage was. I think that's what Kurt did with that episode. As we all have done as lads with our single shot .22. There is no one sight that will fit everyone. I don't care how or who tests it. If your eyes suck, Aimpoint's look like a goat scrotum with 8 balls or the proverbial bag of grapes, who cares how long the battery lasts. Eotechs are good once you get used to them. Close up, if its in the TV, it's down. Delta Points and various other sights have their benefits and negatives. If your eyes have no astigmatism, can accommodate at least 10 diopters and your vision is 20/20, plain vanilla A1 or A2 sights are hunky dory. That would be from young people up to age 40, hence the majority of infantry riflemen in that age group. Roughly at age 40 accommodation is lost, going to about 1 diopter at age 70. If you don't have 20/20 vision, the Decot solution recommended by KurtM above works fine. If you have astigmatism(30-80% of the population, depending on age), specially fitted contact lenses can correct this. There is no correction for loss of accommodation, because that is the contraction and release of the ciliary muscles making the lens of the eye longer or shorter. Meaning closer or farther focus. Like any other muscle they get tired. The upshot of this is that there is no "best" 3 gun limited optic under current rules and no sight is necessarily better than any other. You basically have to try them all and see your eye doctor before deciding what is the best for you. I think experience in shooting iron sights is essential, and if you never shot iron sights until you were age 40, the learning curve and variables would make me say "what's the point?". KurtM has been doing this since Abraham Lincoln was President and might not need as much information from his eyes as a newer shooter to shoot well in 3 gun. Good luck.

^^^^ This. Being new to corrective lenses in my mid-40s sucks!!

I went round and round with my sports vision specialist optometrist. Then realized that if I just get corrected for infinity and don't dance around with focus distances (sight-target-sight-target-repeat) I'll be much better off. That pointed me toward Open (now sometimes called Unlimited). In retrospect, I could have done something different if I knew *then* what I know now. Oh well. Life happens.

If I do a Heavy Metal rifle as an offshoot of my 6.5 Creedmoor, I'll be eager to try one of the upcoming Burris reticles. I look forward to seeing the reticle designs.

  6. Thanks Michael. I'm trying out some new gear at this match too-

So far I'm really liking the Trijicon MRO. 2 MOA dot, wide field of view.

Not the M1A you used the first time I ever saw you shoot (on TV), but that should do nicely.

I look forward to more feedback on the MRO. I definitely need my glasses when using a dot!

  7. Currently all my 308 AR mags are 20 round ones. Are the Magpul 25 round mags long enough to monopod off? I figure I'll pick some up for Blue Ridge if so, and of course only load to 20 rounds.

I feel like the universe is in better alignment if you are getting Heavy Metal trigger time, Bryan! Good luck.

  8. I ran a AP for the last two seasons and I didnt really like the way the tube was connected to the barrel nut adapter. I had some issues with the tube coming off center, because the three torx screws couldnt hold the carbon fiber tube tight enough.

That's the Generation 1 attachment that I have. And I've given it a skeptical eye for the same reasons. Sometimes I wonder how (or if) it moves under recoil.

I have not seen how Gen 2 works, but I think it uses a different barrel nut from mil-spec. In the end, it seems that nearly everyone uses a different nut from mil-space for robust free-float hand guards

  9. I started with a 5R. I added HS bottom metal, cause you can do it yourself and the mags feed well, topped,it with a Bushnell 3.5-21 with the G2 reticle and shot it for a year. It is an easy platform to get started with and is easily upgraded. The 308 is a fine platform to learn on, but it has it's limits.

I had it rebarreled to a 6.5 Creedmoor added a JEC brake, Rifle Basix trigger and have competed with it in PRS, Woodys DMM, and the Guardian matches. I've had top ten finishes and don't feel it has held me back at all. The Creedmore is a better choice for PRS and there is excellent factory ammo.

That seems like a great path.

  10. Why do you think Black Hole barrels are hammer forged?

I mistakenly thought that was the only way to get polygonal rifling. Thanks for the correction.

Black Hole barrels are NOT hammer forged.

I have a 20" BW in 6.5CM...You can too! Just call!

    Tell them I sent ya.

Thank you, Pat. I appreciate the education and correction. :D

I'll have to do more research into how they make their barrels and rifling.

If I make an order from them, I'll be sure to call and tell them that you sent me.

  11. For better or worse, I have decided on 6.5 Creedmoor as my longer-range/precision rifle round. I've begun the reloading equipment purchase with a die set and new brass from two makers. I'll be doing a bolt gun in this caliber that I will share with my son. As a compliment to the bolt gun, I am exploring a semi-auto with a barrel about 20". Everything goes sideways when I pick this length. I see mostly large profile (.8"+ at gas block) 22" or 24" tubes.

Lilja makes a 20" barrel that is expensive but it looked like it fit the bill. That is until I saw the spiral fluting! Wouldn't that reduce the flexural stiffness of the barrel more than flutes along the barrel long axis (e.g., discontinuities along the outer edges from spiral cuts)? I'm hesitant. Even if not a stiffness problem, it's an awfully expensive all-metal barrel.

So, the question is: Would you please share recommended barrel makers for a 6.5 Creedmoor large frame AR (DPMS pattern)?

I'm familiar with Rainier, Fulton, Proof, Black Hole (good price but worried about residual stress from hammer forging process), JP, and Lilja. I don't want a boat anchor and I don't need something hellishly long; the bolt gun would have a form factor more like that, you know? (ha ha) What part of the market am I missing?

For this gun design, I'd be trying to maintain a modest amount of maneuverability compared to the 24-26" bolt gun. (I'd consider the 18"-22" range)

Thanks, as always for your thoughts. :-)

  12. It's "effective". However, I have always found it to be overbearing and obnoxious on the range. I say that as a bystander, not as a shooter. But I've had the experience behind the shooter, to the sides, in all directions (not down range, mind you). So, they are crude, in my opinion. Many other designs have come on the market since then. Some of them are less punishing to at least the shooter if not for all concerned and at least as effective.

  13. I suggest another forum search. You'll find conversations like this one (among many):

I used "Burris 1x" as my search string, so I did cheat a little. I knew some of the prior discussions. But keywords like Limited and Optic were in the thread titles. I hope we have information that you find useful.

We've had a few chats this year. In particular, the Burris offering has had big conversations.
