  1. Bushnell makes a 1-8.5 that John Paul of JP Enterprises used on carbine at Rocky mountain 3 gun. I think that was the match. This year? You can find the video interview on YouTube. The optic was a minor point; mostly about the rifle configuration.

One of our own members suits a detailed review of the Primary Arms 1-8. I think two reticles are available.

I haven't touched, seen, or used either. But, I'm interested. I might want one for a 308 AR build.

  2. I love Tikkas! I'm used a T3 in WSM for hunting this year.

If the plan were to just run a factory action/barrel I would definitely get a Tikka or Howa 1500 over a stock R700

I just thought the PTG seemed like an exceptionally good value for a semi-custom relative to purchasing a 700 donor and having it worked over. I still don't see why it's not.

The Black Friday Sale is over and I didn't jump on one, but I did pick up some bottom metal and reamers for a different build direction. Hopefully they'll ship without hassle. I guess my end goal is to have a serviceable comp rifle that hits all the basic needs. I don't want to go balls out on a build for a PRS style gun that I would shoot in 5 matches a year (which is likely given that the rest of the 2016 shooting schedule is already filled with pistol/multigun matches).

Having the switch barrel capability would just have been icing on the cake so I could buy a new barrel and headspace it myself without having to send it out to a gunsmith each time. Most of the popular gunsmiths are quoting me 10-14 weeks for a rechambering at the moment.

A system with a barrel nut is a big attraction for exactly that reason. It isn't always about the money. Lost time is a cost, as well.

  3. Michael! When are you going to start shooting with us? You've been talking about it for 18 months. Time to get off the couch and quit eating bon bons! You need to buy this 25-06 and start ringing steel!

Happy birthday a bit late. I have to sell some things to pay for anything new. And the new teaching job took up more time as I got into it. I definitely need to get moving on things, no doubt, but I'm not the only one that has a say in financial matters, if you know what I mean. The marketplace seems to be coming to me with prices and availability. At least that much is going my way.

  4. In my limited experience, barrel weight is what pisses off shooters that are concerned about their upper body strength. It isn't as much the actual mass as it is mass distribution.

For example, my 12 year old son is as thin as you can get before our pediatrician puts him on a special diet. He can hold a 15 pound bag of pet food fine. Hand him a long rifle-shaped object that is lighter than the food bag, but sized like a rifle (of course) then it's a challenge. The mass is so far away from him that he has to work much harder to hold it up. I suspect that your wife is facing similar challenges. Definitely keep weight down over all, but weight (mass) far away from her body may be what she is sensing most. That is what generates the torque in her grip.

  5. Agreed. We have some people that shoot PRS or PRS-style events over at the Precision Rifle section of the Multi-Gun forums here on BE.com.

If you want to shoot 6.5 Creedmoor, there is a wonderful little site for that with truly nice people. It's very focused on that cartridge and its applications, not much else. PM me for more information.

Our Precision Rifle forum is at this point in the hierarchy:

  6. I'm planning on shooting Heavy Metal this spring. I was wondering if a DPMS Oracle 16 with a new hand guard,

trigger, and nice scope being the only modifications is an OK starting platform?

    Thanks Maize

You just got one of the big time HM guys in your camp! Good luck. I may make the move to HM myself in 2016. But if my matches in NC here move to single stack 45 then that's a pain for me. I have a polymer frame 45 and am not interested in a single stack for now. I've spent enough on guns already! :-)

  7. Looking at my spreadsheet for possible 308 loads, I'm seeing that case (once fired LC) and powder costs are very close to equal. Then the bullet is what bites you. On powder, I suppose you can look for minimum loads that use the cheapest amount & type of powder. However, I'll go out on a limb and say that any economies there would be small. I'll focus on bullets from here on.

Powder Valley shows that Hornady 150 grain FMJ-BT in 308 can be had for approximately 17.8 cents each. Not sure how to get much lower than that on a consistent basis. From Midway, you could get 110 grain 30 cal carbine round nose FMJ for 16 cents each. Powder Valley has the same for 15 cents each (not currently in stock). I don't know if those would work well for everyone's rifle.

Sticking with the 150 FMJ, it looks like one could get down to about 45 cents per round if you can't reuse brass. If you can reuse then the non-brass costs would be in the low 30s for however many rounds you can make the cases survive.

I hope that some of this was helpful. If not, my apologies.

  8. I would go with the upper that should give you a more realistic (similar) training to your full up AR. When I had a S&W M&P 22, I never got it to fee like my competition rifle. Sold it. But I have not been in that 22 AR market since I sold it.

  9. I haven't shot it yet but thought I'd post what the brightness of the illumnated reticle looks like in daylight. It is daylight visible, it's not a flaming ball of EoTech, but it's still visible. Remember people, this is a $350 scope.

Both photos brightness set at full (11/11) and at about 10am in full sun. These are SHITTY CAMERA PHONE PHOTOS, so don't go judging sharpness with it even though I'm sure everyone will. I was trying to hold the phone steady with the scope using a shitty camera phone. This photos are just so you can see how bright the daylight illumination of the reticle is since I couldn't find anything in full sun before I bought it. Hope this helps.

Given the quality of the photographic equipment (as you 'emphatically' highlighted), I'm impressed with what I see at the price point. Thanks for sharing and helping the forum with more data.

  10. I am guessing most of you reload. As I am not set up to reload 223, where is the best place to buy

    this heavier ammo?

I have been a happy SGammo.com customer for a long time. They had some IMI 77 grain loads available in recent weeks. The ADI Outback 69 grain loads are very nice. I have some of them myself.

  11. Where do you suggest I post my question?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ideally the moderators would have moved it to "Rifle - Technical". That is a closer fit to your purpose.

To your original question, I think that you can see that the JP model is highly regarded. It is certainly what I would get, if I needed that platform. I'd get it for shooting MGM Ironman in Trooper division, for example.

Finally, welcome to this forum. I hope that we can assist you in the future.

  12. I was shooting m193, I would like to think that's plenty warm

Yes, but it is also relatively high velocity. Therefore the time in the barrel between gas port and muzzle is less than a comparably powered (but naturally slower) 69 or 77 grain load. Have you tried any heavier bullets?

Dwell time is a function of port-to-muzzle distance as well as bullet velocity. Together they make dwell time.
