  1. Anything said by an expert like Patrick completely trumps what I'm about to say, OK?

One memorable time I was squadded with at least two women in a match. One was Candice Horner.....yes wife of the famous Daniel. She did great outside of an odd equipment failure.

The other was a new-to-3-gun shooter. She was a fit young lady (did lots of CrossFit from what she said) that had experience with pistol competitions but was new to 3gun and shotguns in particular. She was borrowing a Benelli M2, as I recall. It was definitely an inertia system gun. But, it just wasn't her cup of tea. On one stage someone loaned her a VersaMax with a 22" barrel. That was like night and day to her. Same ammo in each gun. Her reported perceptions were so strong that I doubt the modest difference in weight between guns would account for all of her reaction.

She was hell bent on getting a VersaMax before the next match. She was sold right then and there.

Given that tiny sample size of one person, I would hope you can get the 1301 to fit your wife. However, it sounds like it is a very awkward fit for her, right out of the box. That's a problem.

I wish you both the best of luck.

  2. No need for the grease with the Lucas Extreme oil. :)

Mark, thank you very much for confirming what my intuition was beginning to tell me. Once I started using it I was thinking, "Wait a sec, do I really need any grease?"

I think it's good stuff. And their customer service when trying to find a local retail location was very nice. They are early in the process of getting a retail network across the country for the Outdoor line.

Actually, "good" doesn't quite cover my thoughts. "Great" may be a better term. I junked all of my biodegradable stuff after I used the Lucas products.

  3. Hi Pat,

Looks like a very nice, functional, and successful build!! I've been thinking about an Aero receiver set as a hand crafted alternative to buying a DPMS G2 and modifying it. They seem light enough reading the specs when I compare to the new DPMS platform.

I'd like to say that I could predict about half of your components based on your past use and advocacy. That's not a bad thing. On the contrary, you have been finding useful components over time and working with them. Certainly some evolution as well, but you're rocking what has proved itself to you.

Did you have somebody else drill for the bipod attachment or did you do that yourself? I've been wrestling with that concern when I've considered that tube for my own 308 AR.

I hope you don't mind if I go to school on your build as I consider a 308 AR for myself. Sharing this with us is very helpful.

    Thank You,

    Mike

  4. I'm keeping my Warne RAMP mount for some applications. Their Skel line looks very interesting. I'm definitely shopping for a Bobro mount for at least one, perhaps two, optics. The ability to remove and remount back to zero would be helpful for some of my gear. That is what is pointing me toward Bobro (among others to consider). Quick release levers :-)

  5. The bottom (6 o'clock) positions on both of my earlier generation AP Customs lightweight hand guards each have a row of slots to mount their rail sections. That said, I have problems doing that where I want because of interference from my gas block. The rail mounting screws protrude too far into the inner tube space. It's another reason I'll be retiring the AP gear on my competition rifle for middle of this season onward.

  6. I don't mean to drift the thread, but that is a looooong tube. I ran my 26" VersaMax with at least a 13 round tube (maybe it was 14?) and that seemed precarious in some dump barrels. I would hate for you to get a DQ because of a very imbalanced shotgun when you ground it. On your question, I'm afraid I don't have any first hand information on extra long springs.

As an alternative, I like the CarbonArms versatube. Get it maxed out and it's rock solid.

  7. Tomorrow, the UPS driver will be delivering a batch of Lucas Oil Contact Cleaner and Extreme Duty Gun Oil. I'm hoping to retire all of my FrogLube products. They work fine, but I expect to get slightly better performance out of the Lucas Oil product line, given how I operate. However, I am missing at least one thing.

What would be a good grease for higher wear locations on all three guns? Or am I over thinking this because the Extreme Duty product won't need the grease in spots? I'm accustomed to putting grease on slide rails and the like.

Maybe one of the Lucas sponsored shooters has an opinion? Thank you all for your input and assistance.

  8. What are they charging for the ar-308 6mmCM barrel?

I didn't ask but since I know those guys I'm sure it will be reasonable. I'll post the cost when it's delivered. I have powder, 4350 and 4831sc, 1700 Berger 105 Hybrid, primers, brass and a set of Whidden 6mm CM dies at the house, now I just need that barrel.

    Doug

Brother Doug, you are all set with that pile of reloading materials! I hope it's amazing for you.

  9. I have PMC branded M193 clone ammo for short range stuff. Anything for precision or past hoser distance sees me shooting Prvi Partisan 223 75 grain. Some days I think I'd be better served by finding one load to shoot all the time and never worry about it. PM me if you want any ideas on where to go to order these types of things. I don't want to advertise for somebody in what should be just an informational thread.

  10. After considering all of my gear and guns, I decided that a 308 platform would be the best compromise for different larger caliber or longer range needs. I'd like to have a 308 so I could dabble in Heavy Metal once in a while. I've already got the 45 and the pump gun.

Whether or not I do Trooper or Open in 2016 is still a debate topic (but only those two choices). Regardless, I'll need to have a good 308 load for long range. If I do Trooper then I also would need a nice shorter-range load for it. Between these concerns and a desire to have a 300blk carbine, I'm planning to begin reloading in the next couple of months.

Doug, I'll shoot at everything!! No whimping out, I promise. :D

  11. Well I've never used a 1919, but my VEPR-12 is a 22" barrel and my old Saiga-12 that ran the best was a 24" barrel. I think the added back pressure helps.

I had not thought about the mechanics of back pressure compared across barrel lengths. Thank you for that insight.

Unless you really want the longer barrel, consider buying a complete gun for parts. For not a whole lot more money you get a spare barrel plus spare bolt, locking block and carrier.

Hmmm, yeah I don't have any particular desire one way or another on length. I was asking to get some feedback on what the differences might be and if people had recommendations or preferences. Interesting idea on how to get spares. Thanks!

Do you have the T&N aluminum lower on yours?

  12. Some excellent info here for anyone considering trooper.

    http://sinistralrifleman.com/trooper-class/

I agree. I have been going over those posts in recent weeks.

I used a 308 AR with a 22 inch barrel. My load was 155 grain berger hybrids going 2800 fps. The berger 155 has the same BC as the 175 Sierra. I would recommend a gas gun because accuracy is not the critical the targets are huge even for the range that are at. I am sure you could hit them with a longer barreled ar15 if you knew the RO could call the hits.

I think getting your hits called fast is a factor to look at.

Good information. I've been trying to see what loads could be workable for longer ranges in 308. Berger and Sierra TMK seem like ones to consider. Thanks.

In trooper I think having a semi auto .308 that you can shoot everything past 100 yards with is a viable strategy as long as you have a PCC to use for all the close range stages.

    http://sinistralrifleman.com/category/ironman-3-gun/

That was along the lines of my thinking. PCC and then something beyond 223 on the true rifle side of the equation. 308, some form of 6.5mm, etc.

  13. Most of the people I saw shoot the bonus targets at my first ironman last year used about as much time as they gained.

I am concerned that I would land in that category.

I'd rather engage targets and hit them for no gain than pussy out and not shoot them at all. To me it's about shooting and I go to matches to shoot targets not pass them up.

    Doug

Doug, you're killing me. That was very funny. I do see your point. I've got time to consider how to approach this match. Which division is actually the current issue on my mind.

I like carrying all of my stuff on my back, so......

So sign up to shoot Trooper like I did this year!

    Doug

That poses its own special blend of new challenges and gear ideas. But, I have been kicking that idea around for a few weeks. It is a daunting concept.

I hope you will share your preparation, gear choices, and match feedback after you are finished this year.

  14. I am not saying to not shoot them if you have the rifle or access to one, but I don't think I would revolve my preparation for the match around them. I went one for one on stage 4 on them and gained time. But I had access to a great rifle. If I had to travel a long ways for the match especially by flying I don't know if I would worry about them unless I could borrow a rifle.

I don't have anything that would be suitable for the longer range targets. That's what motivated my original question. I wanted some thoughts on what to buy/build/borrow.

  16. I'd rather put it in a barrel on the extension rather than on my barrel, especially after it was set up by Jeff Cockrum. :-)

I had a much longer one from Nordic for a couple of matches but I didn't like the erosion on it. And it was too long for full stability in some dump barrels. That's one challenge of long shotguns.

In my not-very-awesome opinion, 24" barrels feel very good. My SuperNova pump gun is that length. Feels good.

  17. I Agree with caz, b.s. on a 28 being too long for ports. Seems to be the norm to have a 21 or 22 inch barrel with a 12 round mag tube that sticks out 6 inches or more past the end of the barrel. My math tells me that is 28 inches or so...

I use 26 inch barrels on my Nova and my M2 with 10 round mag that is flush with the barrel. No major problems noted.

Is getting a 10 or 12 round tube and pluging it for local laws an option? If so, that's what I would do, that way you can remove the plug when you are out of the state and play with the big boys...

Run what ya got! The Vinci is a GREAT shotgun!

    jj

Unless you can permanently and irreversibly plug the tube, I don't think so. Which then would be pointless, naturally. It isn't some hunting regulation. NY State won't tolerate a "high-capacity" shotgun. Now, what happens if you use very short shotgun shells instead of 2.75"? The authors apparently didn't think of that. I recall reading that such a question is part of the suits against the NY law. Anyway, it's New York and they all have to wrestle with those laws and how they shake out in the courts, I suppose.

Vinci is a great gun from what I've seen. The one I saw in competition had the Roth replacement tube. It looked sweet and ran fine.

And I ran a VersaMax 26" barrel fine in competition. I made sure the CarbonArms replacement magazine tube went slightly past my extended choke. Works fine. People here doing the math on the long extensions on shorter barrels are on to something. It may save a little barrel weight, but really...... Run your 28" and rock it, my friend!!

  18. I have a 3in Vinci. But, I can't put on the 10rd tube because of the NY SAFE act. I would need a 7rd tube. But thanks for the offer.

I'll join the band wagon and say your should simply take what you have and shoot. Once you said you are in NY then you'll need to see what local competitors do to stay within the bounds of your state's overly restrictive (my opinion) laws. I grew up in Central NY and am still amazed at what was passed in recent legislative sessions.

Take what you have in all gun categories and try out the competition. Enjoy and good luck.
