Fired first shots of .38 Short Colt today (M627 PC). The load: Montana Gold 142 gr FMJ (conical) 3.6 gr of WST (all charges were weighed on RCBS digital scale) OAL 1.167" Fed Sm Pistol primers Probably about 90 degrees today. Ammo never left the shade. Shooting Chrony (Beta Master) results: seven rounds: Lo 854 Hi 896 Avg 867 (PF 123) ES 42.7 SD 14 individual velocities of above seven rounds: 865.6 (last shot) 868.2 861.1 856.7 854.1 869.3 896.8 (first shot) next eight rounds: Lo 811.9 Hi 851.8 Avg 837.8 (PF 118) Es 39.9 Sd 13 individual velocities of above eight rounds: 811.9 (last shot) 834.1 844.9 826.1 846.7 851.8 841.5 845.0 (first shot) Not sure what to make of the variation. One string made 120 PF and one string didn't. Probably will increase charge to 3.7 or 3.8 grains. Also have Tite Group to try. Comments? Advice? P. S. Accuracy? I forgot to take paper targets! But the load did perform well on steel.

Finally got all I need to load .38 Short Colt for a new (to me) M627 and tried some today. I bought a bunch of Hearthco moon clips - and have a few "standard" (brand unknown) clips. Using new Starline .38 Short Colt brass. Also bought the BMT mooner/demooner. Thought I had the perfect set-up. So, I was surprised today when I could NOT moon eight rounds with the BMT. Simply could not apply enough force to get all eight rounds into a Hearthco clip; I could get six in, but with difficulty, and the last two simply would not go it. They did load easily with the BMT into the "standard" (brand unknown) moon clips. These clips mic at .022"/.023" thick, and loaded rounds were a bit sloppy in them. The Hearthcos mic at .025" - and could not get the Starline brass into them with the BMT. So, NOW what do I do?? Ditch the BMT? Get the "pliers" type mooner? I bought a couple of thousand pieces of the Starline brass, so I don't want to switch brass. And who else makes .38 SC brass?

2013 Midwest Regional ICORE

2013 Midwest Regional ICORE match registration: http://icore.org/pdf/MidwestRegionalEntry_2013.pdf Hosted by Stillwater Firearms Association, Fallon, Nevada. P. S. Am glad to hear there are plans to host the Midwest Regional in a more Midwestern location in 2014! -
P. S. Any chance you'll shoot the Lowell IA USPSA match on July 7?? I'll be in the area and plan to shoot it.
-
Thanks, Doug. I do have some TiteGroup. (Any suggestions for a starting load?) How about WST? According to the burn rate chart, WST is slower than TiteGroup and faster than N320. Like many others, I'll be looking for more powder. And some VV N320 too.

With three five-gallon buckets full, should be no problem to sort and find the headstamps that will properly fit! I've found .45 ACP to be much more forgiving, but still there are some headstamps that don't fit (too tight.)

Anyone using Clays in the .38 Short Colt with 142 and/or 147 gr bullets? I understand Clays might be a bit fast for that combination. But with the powder shortage being what it is, I sure would like a Clays load that will make ICORE PF.

Uh oh. I'm just starting to get set up to shoot .38 Short Colt in a new (to me) 627. And planning to use Clays with 147 gr copper plated bullets and 142 gr FMJ bullets. What is the issue with using Clays and bullets heavier than 130 gr??? Got me really curious as I'm planning to test my new (to me) 627 loading Clays in .38 Short Colt brass with Montana Gold 142 gr FMJ and Xtreme 147 gr copper plated bullets.

Wish I could find some N320. ---- Again, what is the issue with using Clays and bullets heavier than 130 gr???

2013 Midwest Regional ICORE
varminter22 replied to varminter22's topic in Revolver Match Announcements and Discussions
Thanks. As I said, I agree it should be back your way. Fact is, no club back that way wanted to do it in 2012 and 2013. So, we jumped on the chance. I wish you the best of luck. Get it going again in the MIDWEST. Can't guarantee I could attend, but would love to. I was born and raised in rural Missouri. -
2013 Midwest Regional ICORE
varminter22 replied to varminter22's topic in Revolver Match Announcements and Discussions
In what year was the last Midwest Regional actually held in the "real" Midwest??? COF, According to the ICORE archives, the last Midwest Regional (held in the "real" Midwest) was in 2009, with a whopping 27 shooters attending. 21 in Limited Div and six in Open Div. http://icore.org/arc...esults2009.html In sharp contrast, the match last year in "freaking" and "clear to hell and gone the other side of the divide" Fallon, Nevada, had 87 entries (a few folks shot two divisions.) 29 in Open Div, 42 in Limited Div, and 16 in Classic Div. http://www.stillwate...mber-22-23-2012 and http://www.icore.org...esults2012.html That said, I wish you the best of luck in hosting it in your area in 2014. In the meantime, you are cordially invited to come shoot with us in beautiful and friendly Fallon, Nevada. Perhaps that will change your opinion of "freaking" and "clear to hell and gone the other side of the divide" Fallon, Nevada. Please see our schedule at http://www.stillwate...h-schedule-2013 I think you'll find plenty of shooting opportunities. -

COF, of course I cannot disagree. I do hope you'll be able to host it there in 2014 - as it should be. As I understand it, no clubs in the real midwest wanted to do it in 2012 and 2013. So, we jumped at the chance! And I think we can claim our 2012 match was a great success. If you can find the time (and $$$), please do come shoot with us this year. I think you'll enjoy it. I think you'll find our "clear to hell and gone the other side of the divide" town and shooting range quite nice. And, Reno is only an hour away, and Lake Tahoe is about 1.5 hours away - plenty to do and see there! I do wish you the best of luck in your endeavor! Post script I'm trying real hard to NOT take offense to your reference to "freaking Fallon" and our "clear to hell and gone the other side of the divide" location. And it ain't easy. -

Is there a point when competition becomes irrelevant
varminter22 replied to Aglifter's topic in Mental Conditioning
I really like that idea. Is there any real downside? -
For what its worth, I've been using Winchester Super Target (WST) for years. Haven't tried the Precision bullets, but as Xtreme Bullets is only about an hour from my residence, I've been using them for many years also. I think everyone would agree Xtreme Bullets are not exactly precision match bullets. But they've worked quite well.

I believe you may very well be correct. I think there were corrections made in the "protest hour" and the "scores" page was corrected but the "awards" page was not corrected. You might want to email Nathan to get that corrected. And there may be other errors in the "awards" page of the results. I too would like to have an accurate copy! And, thanks for the kind words. SFA was very happy to host such a great event.
