  1. OK thanks. I was just concerned after seeing all problems with the early Gen 4 guns first hand. I will have my new gun by the end of the month.
  2. I have been kicking around the idea of getting a new glock 34 to use sky IDPA gun as well as my occasional carry gun ( I have carried a 17 with a more light for years now so size doesn't bother me) but the only blue label one locally are Gen 4. I worked at a pretty busy range /gun shop when they first hit the market and remember all the ejection issues they had and that makes me question if 8 should get one or not. I really don't want to have to change extractors and ejectors to make the gun run (I armorer is not a matter of not knowing how more the principal behind it) with factory ammo. So has the issue been resolved? If so how do I make sure the gun I buy has the updated parts? Also right now I am planning on Warren/Sevigny fiber optic front with competition rear. Is that a good set up our should I look into something else? My must have for this is a fixed rear, as I will carry out I just don't fully trust adjustable sights. Thanks
  3. I know you are on my side so no offense taken. I just wanted to point out that for most other things we are lumped in with police. Trust me I am fully aware of the differences between us and have the utmost respect for the police. Part of my issue is where I work is different then most places as well with local leos having no jurisdiction on the property (though we work very closley with them and have a great relationship) I guess my only argument is if they define it as arrest powers then it should be writen that way. I mean what's next if we start looking to much into this finding out if a military guy is actually issued a pistol or if he or she is active duty? The reality is no one will complain if you do it in the spirit which it was intended. I know when I train I'm in no way fast enough with my duty rig to win anything let's face it stuff is in the way flaps are snaped and retention devices requre snapping pushing pulling or writing to congress for permission to get the weapon out you can become proficient but the reality is when using a real duty rig your not gonna beat an open top holster to the draw.
  4. Don't know the size of the vickers release but it is smaller then the factory option which is legal. I would hope that it is legal but if not ill run the stock option.
  5. Yes but how is leo defined is the question. My state qualifies us as le for purchasing firearms and attending training so where is the line I don't see anywhere in the rules that states arrest powers. If the argument is full police powers then constables can't competet cause in most states they can't arrest and for that matter some sherrifs can't either because they can't stop cars in certain states. The rule should and in my opinion is writen with a very wide brush to encompass all who carry a side arm for a living in a uniformed capacity.
  6. Just wondering if my gun will be legal in esp. I have a glock 17 that is currently having the frame textured and I would like to install a vickers mag release and slide stop lever but I don't want to make it so I can't shoot idpa with the weapon. Thanks
  7. To those that state arrest powers are needed to run duty gear I have a question. Why? I work as an armed guard I have powers of detention not arrest but carry cuffs baton radio and gun in a duty rig with retention devices. So why should I be barred from competeing with my work gear? Is practice somehow less important for me? Don't mean to come accross bad here but feel you are trying to make things black and white that aren't.
  8. To use time doing daily tasks such as driving to think about life and how it should be lived.
  9. SeaTact. If I may make one suggestion I would get the polymer sights off the weapon if its used for duty. They are just not robust enough and can easily be broken off if you use them for one handed weapon manipulation. They were never really intended to be carried on duty (this was stated at my armorers class) and were made the way they are to keep the cost down since most end users will change them anyway. If you like the stock sight picture glock offers steel versions that can take a beating. Just a suggestion.
  10. Lol same for me. I picked up the ced 8000 knowing that the earplug would allow me to practice more often at home (the beep would drive my girlfriend and my dogs nuts who would in turn drive me nuts). So far I have seen minor improvments and believe it is the key as well. I veiw it like this, I used to race and trying to improve at shooting without a timer would be the equivlent of trying to race without a stop watch. It just doesn't work what feels fast usually isn't and what feels slow can be very fast perception varies and you need feedback to know what works and what doesn't.
  11. I am very pleased to see some LE guys speaking up as well. I would love to see some of my co workers compete instead most shoot the mandatory 60 rd qual each year (complaining the whole time) and that's it. I know competitions aren't training and that they will never be equal to the stress of a real life encounter but in my mind shooting outside a square range with the stress of a timer can't hirt and besides it tons of fun. We are supposedly switching to m&p pistols soon and when we do I plan to try some idpa with my duty gear to get used to it.
  12. I just used a timer for the first time in my dry fire practice and thought I would post how I did. I know my times are way slow compaired to some of you (heck most of you lol) but I'm. Pretty excited and feel like I actually accomplished a little tonight. Now all I have to do is keep doing it nightly and hopefully I will begin to see some improvment. First some background I work in armed security and have shot one idpa match ssp and the classifier which I shot ssp marksman (missed sharp shooter by .5 of a second). All was done without concealment with a glock 17 strong side owb. First round. Draw from holster hands at sides engage a reduced idpa target with one round (simulated by dry fire to the 0 down section) my time in the end was 1.6 seconds Second round. From slide lock reload and dry fire one round to the 0 down section of reduced idpa target. Time in the end was 3 seconds. Like I said I know its slow but figured I would post it anyway.

    New Glock 17

Ltpatterson is right on the money. In order to add removable backstraps (abd make it smaller) they had to change the size of the housing which changed angles of springs ect. Another thing to watch out for it the trigger bar is different and from what I was told the gen 3 style will not work in the new gen 4 guns. So if any of you are like me and swap out the serated triggers on the compacts for smooth ones make sure you get a gen 4 to change out with.
  14. I use the stock one since I tended to drop the mag by accident with the extended but lately I have been tempted to try the vickers mag release as it is supposed to fall right in between the stock and extended in size.
  15. Ok guys I think I will start with concealment in the form of a jacket or something that is easily swept away then move to more restrictive conver garments like shirts ect that have to be removed with a pull instead. Thanks
  16. S_gorilla45 I just started cracking up when reading your post. I for some reason could picture one of my leo friends who carries a mid sized on duty seeing what you carry lol. The image was pricless. But really I can't blame you why not use the gun your most comfortable with while you can. I'm just glad to see I'm not alone in using one gun for both.
  17. I want to work on my draw and was wondering should I start with drawing the weapon from an exposed holster till I get the motions smoothed out or go right for drawing from concealment? I shoot idpa and carry daily so obviously drawing from concealment is important but I wasn't sure if learing to draw fast and smooth first then adding concealment would be better.
  18. Mitch Rosen makes some very nice stuff. Check out his site www.mitchrosen.com he isn't cheap but I ran onee of his belts for several years without issue.
  19. I totally agree I am on other forums for self defense (lord knows there are enough of them out there) I joined this one with the hope of learning to be a better shooter. I was just curious as to what people are doing. I mean from a very basic stand point the guns we train with the most are our competition guns so it would seem that they would fit the bill for carry as well. As to the jasons's question my glocks wear warren tactical sight and have ny1 triggers with - connectors and smooth triggers. I honestly like this trigger a lot as it feels more like a traditional da trigger to me (which is big since I'm required to carry a wheel gun at work and trasitioning from it to the standard glock trigger was messing me up). For a while this winter I debated getting a 34 to use in competition but then decided that I enjoy competeing with my carry gear and would continue to do so. As a side note I am really enjoying this forum and can't wait to learn more.
  20. Just a little curious how many of you carry the same weapon you compete with? If you do which model? How do you carry it and why did you choose it? I recently started in idpa and use my carry gun a glock 19 (although I have been carrying my 17 a lot recently so it will be used too) I use the same holster (a kaluban cloak) and the same mag pouches in fact the only thing different is my mags because I don't want to drop my carry mags repetedly lol. My best friend does the same thing going as far as to shoot the classifier with his 27. I guess we veiw this more as a way to stay sharp then as a competition and figured we can't be the only ones who feel this way.
  21. I personally don't fool around with lead in my glock but know a few that do and one major thing they look for is harder lead. The softer stuff will lead the barrel badly which as pointed out causes higher pressures. I think pretty much anyone who gets off for under the full cost of a replacment frame owes glock a huge thankyou as most other manufacturers won't give an inch when the weapon fails due to reloads and failing to follow the factory recommendations. Good luck to you in getting your pistol back quickly and I'm. Glad your ok sir.
  22. I have used some lone wolf springs ect without issue but have recently gone back to all oem parts. I became a glock armorer and just can't see a reason not to use glock stuff. My glocks are all set up the same with ny1 springs, - connectors (often called 3.5 connectors) and if they are compacts I replace the trigger bar and trigger with one from a full size as I don't like serated triggers. They are trouble free and I really like this trigger set up to me it is more like a traditional da trigger.
  23. Yeah the high point was after making safe turning to see my best friend doubled over laughing having realized what I did. Lol but the match was still a ton of fun and I can't wait for the snow to melt so we can start again.
  24. So I figured I would share my two blunders from my first idpa match. The first was straight up stupidity. Three targets at 35 yards 3 mags 6 rounds each. At the buzzer draw and engage from the 35 yard line two rds each reload and holster. Walk foward to the 20 yard line draw weapon and while walking to the 15 engage each with 2 rds. Reload and holster then move to the 10yard line draw and engage strong hand only while walking to 5 with 2rds each. The first two stages went great with all round on target, at the last part I start and engage targets 1 and 2 with solid hits move to number 3 bang bang with two more solid hits followed by a look of stupidity on my face as my slide locked to the rear empty since I had micounted and only loaded 5rds in that mag. The sad part is I was second over all on the stage and it was the only shot I dropped had I made any hit at all I would have won the stage. Now for the second mistake in the second to last stage there was a pop up target which would disappear rapidly behind a no shoot never to be seen again target goes up and I center punch it then my training kicks in and I let it go without firing another shot since I was unsure I could hit it in time. The stage ends and the SO tells me not to be timid to track the target and fire the second shot next time. Well enter the final stage and low and behold there is another pop up set up the same way as the final target. It goes up bang one round center mass I track it and fire being ever the new guy who listened well the round hits center mass as well and the target is neutarlized but unfortunately so is the no threat who's forehead the round ripped through prior to hitting the bas guy. In the end its my fault I knew better but did what was suggested anyway and it cost me. What did I learn? Don't shoot just because someone else thinks you should and triple check your round count lol.
  25. Yeah I'm keeping my fingers crossed for spring too lol but in new england who knows when the snow will stop. I will keep you guys updated about the course I am pretty excited because it is going to be my first professionally instructed course. Up until now its generally been a teach myself type of thing even during the 40 hours of training we had for my work ( there were a lot of struggling people there so myself and a couple others who were ok kind of got told to just keep doing what we were doing rather then attempt to make us better). It should be a good course a call to the training director up there said it readdresses some basics and then moves into reloads shooting while moving, shooting movers and multiple target engagments. As to how far it is for you I don't know if you're. Firmilar with nh but its about 10-15 minutes from hampton beach.
