  1. Skipped the local and feel good about it since it was 32 and wet. I like the sport to be fun.

No workout yesterday since I picked up a cold but gonna dryfire tonight. This weather is frustrating since I would be shooting 500 rds a week if it wasn't 34 and snow all week. Global Warming? Right Al.

Speak of frustrating I really enjoy teaching people but I see the same problems in development over and over and can't do anything about it since the human equation is involved. Ego, other noise and past successes or abilities can often keep us off the correct path.

If I could teleport people into my head or the future I would. This sport is tricky because the real crazy thing is you need to take the human equation out of it and it is about mastering gross and fine motor skills together.

I think it is kinda like playing the violin while running a sprint foot race, without trying.

  2. The lex. mafia guys are awesome. We are making trial runs with PractiScore this week. I know the Lexington crew is Practiscore fluent. Is anyone shooting on the Ohio squad well versed in Practiscore? If so we will seek your input/help next month. We intend to score next month's match with Practiscore and do a paper backup just in case. We will conduct trial runs on our tuesday afternoon practice session.

    No Habla

    but I'll ask them

  3. Shot Silver Creek, had two malfunctions because of lack of mag maintenance and a "click" because of pushing it instead of shooting my natural speed. But I won HOA.

I shot with the correct mindset and after looking at the video I see that my physical and shooting training is really paying off, in fact a shooter from another town that ROs me on a regular basis, and I believe doesn't know what my training regime is, mentioned my fast starts and stops. I already know that I am as physically fast as I have ever been, funny I used to be known for it in my 20's/30's. There is a lot more there to develop. Beating 20 yr olds when you qualify for AARP is kinda fun. Wait until I take their girlfriends.

I did improve quite a bit since last match but need at least 10% more to reach an initial goal. It's there and helping my team actually makes it easier although it is getting pretty busy. The next four nights are booked.

The best thing is I have much more training scheduled and hopefully finally have some regular live fire practice. Come on Ohio, groundhog didn't see his shadow.

  4. Ok shot my first real match of the year in sunny southern CA. It was 90 by afternoon and sunny so I can't complain

My match was clean and I think around 5 D's. It was not the kind of match I expected in Norco with the reputation I have heard about over the years but Jojo was out of town. It reminded me of the Nationals. Lot's of start/stop and hard cover.

I shot good but not great. Had a little trouble getting into race mode because I was on phone trying to help my brother and his family to find the range(great to see them), was videoing and all of our RO's were a little quick on the buzzer. Oh well distractions are part of the game and sometimes good is good enough to win.

I am part of a great new team(with some real sponsorship, goals and resources) and our team as well as individual plans are incredible.

Already so far this year I get to do one of my life goals and teach CCW and then of course I'll help take some of the students from the CCW classes start them in USPSA then develop and train them to meet their goals.

I have also started a physical workout program that targets improving specific shooting skills and I see Major improvements already. Last night we did our first team dry fire workout and if I told you what happened you wouldn't believe it.

Let's just say never limit anybody or yourself.

  5. I started in Open cause, that was the only division we had. It was racing then, run what ya brung. Of course I shot a single stack .45 with 7 rd mags. That gun evolved to Comps, Reddots and trick 8 rd mags as the sport progressed

I strongly recommend new shooters to start in Open IF they are training and learning the proper fundamentals.

It reveals your weakness and allows you to correct it quickly, if you let it.

Now if you are just using the dot to "Get your Hits" this is what happens to you, you never get very good because off your lack of proper training and effort. You also usually make and stall at a middle classification and never seem to win anything. Nothing wrong with that unless you want to win or want a higher class. Open is fun and easier to shoot. But the thing is its easier for everybody so the competition is close.

  6. In CM 99-21, Mini-mart, my buddy found that the shelf was too crowded using 170's. I don't know if any other classifieds might favor 140's.

Tip for this classifier/ gun is loaded, sitting on shelve below the table, mags on lower shelve too. When you grab your gun with your strong hand grab a mag with your weak hand & set it on the top shelve. It is so much easier to find when reloading it does not take your mind off of the task of shooting A's fast. All you have to do is look down to see the mag you need. IMHO

If you wanna do this or any classifier at 100% don't add extra motions or actions. I don't think I would do

this ever and I think I did mini mart at 105% last time.

Oh and yes 140 are faster to reload. More reliable too. I guess you could train in 170

but I like to shoot other divisions too.

  7. The Open gun is one of the the best fundamentals teacher out there But if you don't learn them and just use it to "get your hits" you will probably have an amazing amount of misses with a Limited gun

Sure Open is easier, here is the thing, its easy for everybody so ya gotta have game to win. I can shoot a Limited\1911 SS well but do have issues with a striker fired gun because of my 1911 background. Its not the sights\grip\etc its the long trigger travel

  8. Good stuff.

I think a majority of teachers fall into a trap of communicating how they did it, see it or what is important to them.

I do think in general that minutia is better in practice and big picture is kinda of a match type attitude

Now I remember quite a few years ago thinking Robbie was full of it when he said he felt the bullets going up the ramp and could feel jams as they happened. I know for sure now, that he is not full of it, so I think you can grow into and because of both areas

  9. My co instructor shoots a STI heavy full frame in 40 major and doesn't have issues with recoil because of training and technique.

She probably only out weighs the gun by 100 lbs and is a fairly new shooter.

Ask people to shoot their gun, most will let you.

Pick one, find a trainer and practice.

    Get good and have fun.
